I seriously can't see a character in game calling a .45 handgun, and saying "Well, that's an SDC weapon." What do you call MD in your games? In White Wolf they had another type of damage called aggravated damage, and it generally took longer to heal than normal so in game I had my characters call aggravated damage "Lingering damage".
So I ask the question again, what would you call Mega-Damage in game?
Well, one of the books actually has a character (Erin Tarn, I think) USE the term "Mega-Damage"... so it looks like it's an official in-game term.
But we generally refer to MDC materials as "mega-structure" and MD weapons as "being able to damage mega-structure materials" when it comes up.
Strangely enough, it hasn't really come up very often.

We used to just refer to them as High grade weaponry and armor and several different terms to try and avoid calling them Mega-Damage. After a while we just got fed up and actually had a character role play out the term.
"Dude! That guy just took a mega hit there, and he's damaged bad."

It's never really come up. damage is damage, it's just that some things do a little damage and some things do a LOT of damage.

well, baring anything specific, you could just use "high powered" as opposed to "conventional"
as in..
"yeah, that armor will stop just about any conventional attack, but will hold up against them high powered things the CS uses?"
implying (correctly) that MDC weaponry is on a new scale than traditional weapon.
remember, conventional has connotations implying "obsolete" for many people. (as opposed to "cutting edge"......)

I call MDC/MD systems mega-armor and mega-weapons, because they're obviously a lot stronger and more powerful than normal.

I tend towards terms like "conventional" for SDC weapons, and "advanced" or "modern" for MDC gear.
Of course, I can't think of a single instance in any game I've played where the characters bothered to differentiate between types. Mostly it was just "OMG SHOOT THAT THING!!!" *loud destruction noises*

Yeah that's what we usually do, "high tech" or "magical" weaponry covers MDC and normal or coventional armaments are for SDC.
The word "THAN" is important. Something is "better than" something else, not "better then", it's "rather than" not "rather then".

Actually in RUE and merc ops a fifty cal can do MD with a burst...

But that's not a modern .50 Cal, thats a .50 with the tech growth to 2098.
Fifty cal in the Compendium of contemporary weapons does 1d6x10+10 per round.
Fifty cal in Merc ops does 1d6X10 per round and 1d6x100 (1d6 MD) per ten round burst.
The burst rules have been changed since CCW came out, but the base damage of the weapon is the same. granted, nearly every one of PBs games seems to have different damages for weapons, but that's why I use CCW as a baseline.

I like the idea of using 'conventional' to describe SDC grade gear. For MD grade weapons and armor, and I like the sound of 'military grade'. But obviously magic items aren't necessarily military items. How about using MDC, but changing the acronym 'in character' to something like 'Military Damage Class'. so an item can be in the same class as military grade weapons, but doesn't have to be military issued gear.

:nh: there goes that a machine gun can't damage a tank example from RMB Wasn't the explination that a machine gun even though it can cause 100SDC+ damage from a single attack it doesn't do so to a single point instead spraying over an area? In other words all the bullets don't strike the same place.

It's an official change in RUE (But first showed up in Merc Ops) Now anything that can do over 100 SDC does the equivalent in MD.
Is it realistic? no, but then the entire SDC/MD damage mechanic in PB isn't very realistic. GURPS simulates modern armor and weapons much better with its rules for Damage Resistance (DR) An M1a2 has 1500 DR on the front and unless you can punch through it in one shot you're SOL. PB's 'ablative' armor rules have always been flawed, ever since TMNT, where you could destroy a tank with a pistol given enough time and good rolls.
From a strictly 'in game' perspective I like the change because it gives people with cheap, non-md weaponry a Slight chance vs MD critters, particulary small MD predators who can be driven off by injuring them. it gives small communities a little more of a chance to survive, and allows me as a GM to set up 'low end' merc groups equipped with mostly sdc weaponry.
