can you make Tiny Golems?

Unread post by Rimmerdal »

Say I had mage who was a proffessional thief..
back story:
now he wants a minion who can kick tail and squeeze in a tight space.

a few weeks later after some serious and very risky burgleries later...He gets a scroll for create golem and learns the spell.

Now with a lump of clay can he make a golem that is say a foot tall?

If so would it still be MDC and have all it normal powers?

Better yet can he make it so it can go "Mud mode" and slide under things or trip up guards chasing him?

Edit:
It just occoured to me a toy or puppet could also be used...as it would not draw much attention.

There was a Rifter with ideas on Familiars & Golems like you describe, but for some reason I can't find the article in my listings. :x

It's a very good article. 8-) Another reason why Rifter #21 is so coveted.

Unfortunately, no. The minimum height for a Golem as described by the spell is 6'.

Also, let's not forget the sheer weight of a Golem made of clay or iron. Some friends and I got into this debate last weekend. A 6' golem of iron, with a standard body type would weigh roughly 4000 lbs.

He could research a Mini-Golem spell, but I'd say that it would have a fraction of a full-sized golem's stats. I wouldn't discourage that option though.

Why did the idea of a mini-iron-golem railgun just pop into my head?

Using the mini-iron-golems as ammunition, of course.

There is a creature like a tiny golem. It's called a humonculi, or humonculos.
I let my mages make 'em all the time.
They are very useful, but not very durable.

Any particular rules that you use for this? I'm guessing that this isn't anything that can be found in any of the books?

Hey don't laugh...they can shoot trained acrobats out of cannons so tossing Minor MDC 'Lawn Gnomes' is no problem...
But the smaller golem would be ableto inflict minor MDC or Heavy SDC..I can see many shins. knees and groins being very sore...

of course a new spell is in order but I love making that sort of thing.

The Homulici? I recall A D&D had them. decent familiars but they we're better than having squirrel. I should have guessed Rifts would have one.

Rifters #21 won't be an easy find, but I'll try...

I could explain how Homonculi were theorized to have been created in the real world, but it's kind of graphic.

You could give your lawn-golems hollow feet which you load with ramjets...? Of course, that's getting really, really silly. Maybe just encase them as a ramjet SABOT round like the 120mm uses.

Personally, I don't see anything wrong with giving them supernatural strength, if you balance it by keeping it very low. A supernatural strength of 1 is impressive and appropriate, but not really impressive. Scale it up from there as the GM pleases, I suppose?

If you put enough power into the rail/coilgun, you should be able to get impressive damage at lawn-gnome size. Not boomgun levels probably, but the only thing stopping you is rate-of-fire, the size/shape of the cannon, and the power output of your energy source.

What is this? A Flooper Operator invention?

No the Lawn Golem doesn't sprout flowers on impact :P

Funny as the idea sounds..it could work. I'd have him dig in and start yanking on hydraulics, pulling gears and other such nasty things. If near the pilot....well messy but effective.

but it would affect larger Bot and vehicales only as the little fella needs room to work.

Okay, sorry for the lateness of my reply.

Making a Humonculi requires the mage have Chemistry, Biology, Art and Sculpting. Skill rolls are made against each skill at -15% to each.
He/she begins by fashioning a body, usually about six inches to a foot in height out of clay and plant matter (the plants are used in the interior of the body). They typically weigh 10 ounces + 2D6 ounces.
The ritual requires an investment of 150 PPE from the mage, and takes 6 +2D6 hours to complete.
The tiny servant will have IQ:9 ME: 12 MA: 9 PS: 10 PP: 12 PE: 16 PB: 1D8 SPD: 10.
It possesses Winged Flight if the creator fashions it with wings. It will fly at either SPD: 15 or by Fly As The Eagle if the creating mage so empowers it.
The Humonculi may be given either 8 Skills or 1 Skill Program and 4 Secondary Skills depending on how the GM does skill selection. All skills are +5%.
The Humonculi will live for 7 years: 14 for adding +50 to the PPE expenditure.
The PPE cost can be reduced if the mage can get an animating elixer from an alchemist (GMs' call).

The Humonculi will have 3 attacks per melee, +3 to parry and dodge, +1 to strike, and does 1D4 SDC in combat.
Their PS is considered Extraordinary for the purpose of lifting and carrying weights. Despite this, they are not particularly effective in HtH combat.
The creating mage determines the personality prior to creation.
Humonculi can be programmed to be responsive to someone other than the mage at their activation: once determined, their loyalty cannot be changed.
They have a Horror Factor of 10.
Hit Points are PE + 1D4 per year of life.
SDC is 10. They have a natural A.R. of 8.
They sleep approximately four hours per day.
They will understand their creators' native language (65%) and are literate in the same at 50%. Big words baffle them.

They are not affected by Negate Magic, Banishment, Turn Dead, nor are they affected by Faerie Foods. Anti-Magic Clouds make them sluggish (all bonuses reduced to zero, flying speed reduced to 1/2).
They are impervious to Elemental spells that would otherwise affect their compositions (clay and plant matter).
Despite this, they are fragile.

I figure if its for thief it will be a walking Lockpick and thieves tool set...a few other tools but the formula the same TW or Magical.
