Good point, it really depends on house rules I suppose. I belive we decided that you can't use a "hold or lock" unless you are in Grappling range but there are a number of techniques you can use from combat range to put an opponent on to the ground. Of course this could always just be a follow up to an automatic bodyflip/throw. There are also expanded grappling rules in Rifter 3 that makes maintaining a hold while standing slightly more difficult(which it is). If you are just playing with canonized rules then going straight for the hold is an excellent tactic resulting in what would make this one of the most powerful moves in the game(other then maybe some "death blows"). One of the reasons why you may not want to do this standing is its easy to fail at getting a hold which leaves you open to a lot of attacks. While on the ground if you fail your opponent has limited striking capacity against you.

The only house rule our group uses is we just have Auto Dodge work just like Auto Parry, only it's a dodge.

and it does seem to work out like it does in real life. a Grappler has a definte advantage in a one on one fight in our games. however, when fighting multiple opponets we also rule that while you have a hold on someone you can't use your hands for anything but, so if he has a friend it's not so great.

now I remember one one shot game we had we had one guy with Akido, another with Chin'na, another with jujiitsu, and yet another with Druken Style. that was an unholy terror team in the barfight we had gotten into

yea I know a group of martial arts masters arn't likely to get into a barfight like that, but we were just haivng a 1 shot joke game so we were just having fun with the rules.

I prefer to kick them when they're down, especially if it's right after I've cut them off at the knees...oh wait, we're talking about combat moves, not message board posting tactics.
