I thought the actor was channeling a bit of Robert Mitchum with the haggard look, but yeah, he's a lot more of a bastard than in the anime. Whenever your captain constantly pulls you aside and starts out saying "I have something to tell you...", odds are he's a bastard(not of the magnificent variety) about to drop a bomb, probably many, on you, and you're going to feel seriously screwed.

Also noticed the live-action Cosmo Zero had a bit of a Veritech vibe going on....split frame, thrust vectoring, twin manipulator arms.
And the Gamilons were almost Invid-like.

They might have had some Mospeade fans when they developed the movie.

actually, it looked to me to be a FSW rip from the Banshee fighter in the old Battletech cartoon. which had a similar "bending in half" mechanism it used to land vertically.

Also reminds me of a (Grumman?) proposal for a split-fuselage VTOL design for shipboard use; the idea being the cockpit/nose locks with a mooring mast, while the engine-bearing fuselage swung down to slowly lower the aircraft down to a special gantry. It looked absurd and dangerous and the Navy agreed; the program was dropped.

So no hop for a Logan type fighter anytime in the future?

It would have been a Logan ANCESTOR, except that whereas the Logan can land on its LEGS(and walk to its hangar), the Grumman 'break open' design would have crumbled its tail trying to land straight up and down; it was SUPPOSED to snag a landing tether and be pulled to a elevated docking cradle, or extend its conventional landing gear and play tag with a tilting section of deck. Once it made onctact, I imagine the process was then to tilt back to the horizontal while maintaining just enough thrust that the aircraft didn't fall off, and more tethers could be applied. The idea was, in this way you could use smaller ships as aircraft carriers(no need for long decks), but the weight of the landing equipment would have been prohibitive, and landing in rough seas? I could see quite a few aircraft getting swatted into the waves by a rolling ship.
Fortunately, Harriers and vectored thrust provided a better(and more economical) solution.

So I guess the Logan is technically possible in the futer then.

Just started watching Space Battleship Yamato 2199 recently.
Wish they could redo Macross the same way; use original model sheets but use new animation methods (and get rid of some of the more annoying plotz threads...like Minmei for starters).
No no no..actually, the ORIGINAL Minmei, though obnoxious, could actually SING, unlike the yank [censored] Harmony gold got for the first dub.

Well it could have been worse. We could have been stuck with a obnoxious ,and cute little sidekick.(looks over shoulder and spots C-Ko and Annie with baseball bats and stun guns.)
This isn't going to end well.(sigh)

Minmei actually starts out fairly good, with at least SOME grasp of logistics and some useful skills, but then she becomes an idol-brat with the fingers-on-chalkboard voice. As is, I rank her up there with Flay from Gundam Seed in the ranks of 'useless female characters whose only purpose is to screw up, get jerked around, and introduce unneeded mental uncertainty and moments of assery into the psyches of the lead males'.

I second that, execpt for the Minmei part.

Somewhat agree with you. I honestly fell sorry for them both. With Minmei, like you said, she would do things and you would go, ya, keep going, then she would do something, and you would just shake your head. As for Flay, just a sad story there. She kind of cracked in the middle when she start to minipulate Kira, but in the end, she looked like she was coming around, she gets killed. I'm almost positive if she had lived, she would have turned out to be a better person.

Minmei's biggest problems were a) she became a starlet, and b) she brought back Kyle, who fed her ego. Now, arguably if a) hadn't happened, the whole chain of events that led to the Zentraedi getting musically trout-smacked would be MUCH harder to imagine happening, and if b) hadn't happened, she , either reformed or totally corrupted by fame regardless of the absence of Kyle, might have gotten her claws more firmly into Rick and endangered the whole Rick-Lisa relationship(with possible serious long range consequences).
Really, though, in the latter case, the canon story really came down to an obvious choice as opposed to a potentially more difficult one between two equally formidable female leads. Which, in the latter case, wouldn't have been solved cleanly by anything less than a post-Rain government proclamation allowing polygamy...

And Flay? She could have gone COMPLETELY evil(as some Gundam females are known to do), but missed her opportunity. She also missed her opportunity later on to go kamikaze on Le Crescente(okay, the psychotic break preventing her from shooting him in Alaska, I can maybe buy, but later on? Come on, even if it meant getting gunned down by the rest of the ZAFT guys....), and still later on to blow it again by allowing the Blue Earth pretty boy to torture and shoot to death her friend and superior officer right in front of her eyes(okay, she may have had her desk-console in front of her, but come on, he wouldn't have expected a rabbit like her to pounce on him!). At that point she just became a throwaway tear-jerk for the (pathetic)hero.

I think that, in the end, Flay was out of her depth. And just a scared girl in the end that never got a good foundation under her. Unlike what's her name, her commanding officer, who did in the end, putting everthing together. Plus, Flay never really imbrased the military mentalitly and never got beyound thinking that she could do something herself, like you pointed out those missed oppertounites. She was a damsil in distress till the end.

“But definitely dead?”
“Definitely. Shuffled off the mortal coil. Gone to meet his maker. Said his last hurrah. Definitely absolutely cold-stone dead.”

“Whew...well, maybe this morning won’t be so bad after all.”

“And you know this how?”
”It iz a zegret!”

Was going to have a tiger or some other large carnivorous animal discovered in the bathtub, but didn't feel like researching what the German for "THERE'S A (ANIMAL) IN THE BATH TUB!" as screamed by Lang.

I don't know what to be more afraid of....the fact that Minmei was in the same room as a passed-out drunk Rick Hunter, that she apparently stripped in New Vegas, or that she's carrying a flashbang grenade(along with god knows what else) in her purse.

I was inspired by a one of the women in the Amber books who kept hand grenades in her purse, just in case.

Thank you.
In retrospect, having the tiger would have made the four guys' lives much easier; easy body disposal....

The Zentraedi would have a VERY bad day if that were the case, facing off against the likes of Superman, Green Lantern, Thor, or Quasar.

no, obviously the zentraedi would have super powers and.or super science as well, though of lesser power being Mooks.

personally i think the Marvel universe would be more interesting for a crossover.

Not seeing where you think that's obvious, since then they wouldn't be Zentraedi they'd be super-powered aliens that just happened to be giants.

Nothing happens. After swooping in and wrapping the crash site in a Somebody Else's Problem Field, Interdim removes the dimensional litter that's been dumped where it doesn't belong by irresponsible universe-hoppers.
Subsequently, the party responsible for dumping the SDF-1 on another Earth and screwing up the time/space continua without proper follow-up, gets a visit across the Fourth Wall from certain Nth dimensional entities(Q and the Doctor among them) and fined for illegal dumping, forced to attend remedial courses on proper dimensional alteration, including taking responsibility for what they've done, then assigned to megaversal community service cleaning the spam out of the megaversal information matrix.

Ya, and mecha from any other series would most likely, 99% of the time win and in a big way, but it would still be interesting.

“Get Recovery One prepped and move all this over there, soon as she’s stable! Tell Colonel Kolchek he might just have his live interview after all!”
Oh, here...the mission, remember the mission. The -message-.

“You’re very fortunate, young lady! Your ship crashed right outside the Syrtis Mars Colony! They had a rescue team on your position in minutes! A hundred miles to any side of us and by the time they’d have gotten to you, you’d have been too gone to revive! As it was, we almost lost you! Thankfully, this colony has an excellent trauma center and we’ve benefitted from experience with decompression, hypoxia, and other deep space injuries.”
She blinked as she sucked at the welcome flow of warm air fed to her through the air mask she was wearing. The older female sitting next to her bed was radiating enthusiasm and relief, but also a certain cautiousness. Understandable, if your first contact with alien life resulted in your planet being bombed. But she didn’t remember anything about a colony on this system’s fourth planet....had the natives proven unexpectedly resilient enough to drive their enemies back enough to hold on to offworld colonies? Or was this a last secret refuge, prepared in secret?
Her head still hurt, her body still ached. She was confused, and she stil had something to do...
“You’re not Zentraedi, are you?”
“....Zentraedi? What’s that?”
“You know, the aliens who attacked you? The ones that damaged your ship?”
“Is that what you call the Gamilons?”
“Gamilons? Never heard of them. Is that what your people call the Zentraedi? Big giant people as tall as buildings going around in giant green warships?”
“...no...” Gamilons weren’t particularly tall and while their ships were sometimes green, it wasn’t a consistent thing.
“Well, SOMEBODY attacked you on the other side of your trip! Because when you Folded out in Mars’ upper atmosphere, you flip-flopped into the atmosphere like a buckshot bird!”
“Fold?”
“You know, your faster than light drive?”
“It’s called a wave motion drive.”
“Hmmm...probably another case of people calling things differently. I’m sure our tech people will figure it all out.”
All this was quite confusing and tiring. She had to focus on why she was here.”I’m here to deliver a message. I had a data crystal-”
“Oh, that! We retrieved that and Military Intelligence has already begun reading it. I haven’t got all the details because I’m just Security Grade Ceta, but there’s folks who are going to be glad you woke up, because some of the material on that crystal is just plain confusing, ah, Miss-”
“Princess Astra, of Iscandar.”
“Doctor Cassandra Frazier, United Earth Defense Forces, Syrtis Colony. Glad to meet you.”

Ten years later....

“Micronian fleet approaching, milords!”
“Raise the barriers and target their main units for offensive fire as soon as they come within range.”

“Tirolian Mothership coming over the planetary horizon.”
”Status of the main gun?”
“Charged and ready to fire, sir!”
“Very good. Clear the aperature, gunner, and await my signal to fire.”
In the bow of the Improved Bloc II TriStar, armored plates slide aside, revealing a dark co-axial weapon barrel. Deep inside the bowels of the ship, and aboard two other ships similar to it in the fleet formation, tachyons begin a convoluted dance, building pressure...

Yes...this could be a case of :
a) Canon Iscandar...in another universe, with Princess Astra’s courier ship skipping into another (the Robotech) universe. In which case, the Wave Motion Engine-equipped SDF sent to Iscandar isn’t going to find anything there. Canon SBY Earth is, without the message and the WME schematics, hosed.

b) Canon Iscandar, same as above, only Princess Astra’s ship was somehow duplicated in the misFold, or hit a wormhole with similar effect. Canon Astra manages to get to Earth, dies, but Space Battlship Yamato rises!

c) Canon Iscandar, only the universe jump can be duplicated in reverse. Canon SBY crew very confused and startled to find an SDF and small escort fleet claiming to be from Earth arriving at Iscandar at the same time as they. Cue major canon-collapse.

d) NonCanon Iscandar(very unlikely)---Got their facts about Earth confused. The Gamilons in this case are being squeezed out by the Tirolians and the Zentraedi, with only sneaky tactics like space minefields and SMITE units keeping them from being wiped out completely. With the collapse of the Tirolian Empire due to Protoculture depletion, the Gamilons are now surging back to take advantage of the power vacuum, along with other canon SBY enemies like the Bolides and Cometine Empire fighting over the scraps, and making the Robotech Wars a LOT more aggravating(the wars against the Invid Regent, for instance, taking on a three-way nature as advance elements of the Gamilons, Bolides, and Cometines showing up).

And to head off the inevitable question; Canon SBY Earth is more advanced courtesy of being argiably more advanced along their timeline(and remember, they were able to build entire underground cities while being bombed, whereas even with peace, Canon R-Earth only got one geofront-based Grand Cannon operation in ten years). Pre-Yamato, SBY Earth might have held the lead in space weapons and technology with a slight edge. However, pre-Rain of Death R-Earth quickly catches up due to the big infusion of Tirolian technology and the acquisition of Robotech Factory Satellites. IQ-9/Analyzer not withstanding, R-Earth seems to have the lead in robotics, is about neck and neck in fighter technology, and definitely has better ground military forces, armed with power armor and superior weapons. Fleet-wise, the prevalence of wave motion cannons in SBY’s EDF makes up for the lower throw-weight and poor siting of weapons per individual units, versus the generally higher number of mecha deployed from UEDF/UEEF units. And no Robotech vessel has anywhere near the character/plot shielding of the Yamato. In any engagement involving the SBY Yamato, unless opposing UEDF/UEEF forces have the element of surprise, or Kodai really @@@@s up, the Yamato will pull a hattrick and survive.
