That had been several years ago. Now Grel was a used car salesman in Montana, while Azonia and Gloval were expecting their third child, a girl. And where was he?

I like that with Azonia. I always felt that if she never got hooked up with Khyron, she would have turn out ok.

Agreed. Azonia could have had a future of sorts, as senior advizor to the Earth government if nothing else, but she hooked up with Khyron and it all went to hell.

And Grel...yeah, used car or mecha salesman sounds about his temperment.

In the end everyone got something.

Grel is a successful businessman.

Azonia has a career and family.

And Khyron is the plaything of a trio of Genetically enhanced cyborg Sammies.

Sorry, didn't think to google the one name you gave. And ya, I get it now. And ya, she's scrarry. Along with maides, red heads, and any girls that handle guns. In fact, I wander were she would rank?

Basically, General Armstrong's command at the Briggs garrison counts as a Death Assignment/Middle of Nowhere. And EACH and EVERY one of her men counts as a commando(frankly, it takes a run-in with one of the SCARIEST Humunculi to break any of them, with Izumi Curtiss coming a close second in rattling them). She can beat the snot out of her younger brother, and (it's implied) every one of her men(including, probably Pirate). Unfortunately, we never get to see her and Izumi go to loggerheads with each other, but for the sake of neighboring countries, that was probably a good thing.

Better than the others that come seeking the Flowers of the Desert and braving the Pollinator of the Sands! But your tests have just begun, before you can truly find acceptance among us!"
Rick Hunter resisted the urge to facepalm. Yep, this was going to be one of those messed-up Time Loops...

Elsewhere, a grotesquely obese T.R. Edwards felt a momentary shiver as he oversaw House Edwards' elimination of the last of House Hunter. He'd killed old Duke Hunter, had his brat and mare dumped in the deep desert to be eaten by the sands, and had just tossed the broken body of the Imperial Planetologist...what was his name, Hayes?... to a similar fate in that arid hell. Emperor Lorenz would be well-pleased with the flow of Protoculture once again from this planet! What could possibly go wrong?

Rick's mother is, well, his mother, but his soon-to-be-born unnatural sister is Minmei.
Don't know who'd be Princess Irulan, however.
The Laandsrad could just as easily be based on the Tirolian Empire, or maybe the Robotech Masters and their massive motherships are the Spacers' Guild in this universe. The Armies of the Southern Cross are actually separate Houses and their private armies in this case(with the UEEF being House Atreides/Hunter).
The Butlerian Jihad in this universe was Man's first contact with aliens, and the fearsome enemy that is hinted at in the original Dune series is, in this case, either the Haydonites or the Invid.

The different Houses is what made me think it was Battletech.
