Yeah, canon RTers would be slightly non-plussed by the situation on Defiance Earth; they're used to dealing with only one or two hostile species at a time, and having the entire Earth looking like the aftermath of a Genesis Pit would be a little shocking. They're also used to cleaner skies, but they'd also remember the in-fall of material after the Rain of Death. If there's a coordinated Robotech fleet around, they'd be gainfully employed cleaning up Earth orbit(provided the Arks aren't packing too much in the way of unusual hair-trigger weaponry. Planetside, the Rters would be good with their armored milspec gear(since the general state of tech seems to be hgh-SDC among the resident Terrans). They'd be a power to contend with, especially if the Flower of Life got loose(the FoL might have some interesting interactions with the Voltan terraforming process, though).
Rifts Earth natives would feel right at home on Defiance-Earth; even find the place a bit cushy compared to home.
Was enjoying the show, but then, just stopped watching it. Got caught up in other things. Really would like to get back to watching it.

Ablative projectile against the Heavy Object(that's the titular menace of the anime/manga series).
Maybe Edwards will obstruct a sensor enough for the Bolo to snake a shot in.
From what little I've seen, though, Heavy Objects would be roughly equivalent to some of the light- to medium-weight 'Yavacs' that were a favorite opponent in Bolo stories.
*THere's a lot of contention about exactly what Yavacs WERE, since Laumer liked to recycle names....'Yavac' appeared to be the heavy unit of both aliens and other human forces. were initially tracked units, but later appeared in author tribute-works as legged units, copying their

**Adding to the confusion is the fact that Bolos appear in Laumer's Retief of the CDT seres, albeit as dumb, earlier models, although the CDT is nominally not considered part of the Concordiat/Bolo mainstream universe. If you buy into a merged universe, early Bolo models or specs might have been sold to alien races(like the

Not sure if this has been done yet (I'm only on page 47 so far), but here goes...
********
"Captain Hunter? Message from the ground unit."
Captain Rei Hunter sighed. An hour into this new NG universe, and already they had found every indication of a Second Impact. GMP soldiers had been dispatched to take NERV Headquarters, with Shinji winning the coin toss to lead them in 'capturing' Gendo.
"Captain Hunter here. Report."
"Ma'am, this is Sergeant Aosley. We found the target, and had to taze the crap out of him to get him to let go of the boss."
"Oh? That's new. Normally Gendo doesn't try to kill Shinji when he shows up."
There was a stifled snigger, followed by, "Actually Ma'am, that wasn't it. Gendo started screaming something about Shinji 'being alive' and asking how he escaped. This was accompanied by tears on a scale your husband would recognize, and then we had to taze Gendo because he was hugging the life out of Shinji *through* his CVR."
Rei blinked at that. Then blinked again. Then stared at the speaker. "Sergeant, you have the video logs of this, yes?"
"Of course we do, Captain. We're GMP, not the Gestapo. 'Plausible Deniability' may be fine for the politcos in our ranks, but we ground forces like our documentation. I'm uploading it now, and our report will be filed as soon as we have the sweep and clear finished."
Understood, Sergeant. Hunter out."
********
Just a 'What If' one Gendo was actually less of a conniving jerk willing to turn the world into Tang just to be able to bang his wife again? What if he was being coerced into guiding Instrumentality by Seele because they had his only son, and was in the process of subtle delaying tactics while Ryoji Kaji did the legwork in finding the local Shinji?
Feel free to enhance on this; I'm not much of a writer.

Brilliant!
Yeah, I've seen things sorta LIKE it, where Gendo's played as a puppet by other powers, and some in which he's actively trying to protect Shinji by being a bastard or, at best, an absentee father. And one in which he and Shinji were in cahoots with the whole Instrumentality thing, with intent to hijack SEELE's plans to their own ends.

I had another one I've been wrangling around in my gourd at work. It's based off a fanfic I read a LONG time ago.
********
The GMP forces had landed, silently, secretly, on the new NG-rated planet they'd found. 'The things just keep popping up,' the sergeant thought to himself, pointing out hand signals to his men as they slowly advanced through the Geofront.
The brass had gotten a wild hair on this one. Word through the grapevine had it that something really bizarre was happening here, but there was almostr no intel save the local date: 2028. Thirteen years after most of the NG worlds were in threat of the Third Impact. And yet here it was. Antarctica gone, a red mass of LCL and glow, the NERV Geofront fully active, and three weeks earlier the investigatory team had reported the seventh angel
Master Sergeant Himmons, Israfel, had been defeated by a pair of Evangelions, albeit nother was a purple one.
Master Sergeant Himmons of Charlie Team was unhappy about the lack of intel on the target. In addition to not recognizing any of the NERV personnel, none of the data cables held any information of significance, and even all of the star-faring technologies of the UEsG could figure out the interior structure of the Geofront; it was as if it was shielded somehow.
Slowly the team made their way down the web of supports holding up the city, stopping regularly to sweep for and disable sensors. Himmons faintly heard the unit's tech soldier, a Karbarran named Sh'Noz (don't laugh; more than a few ended up without their own schnozzes after laughing at the hulking teddy bear with a sensitivity), complain that a place like this shouldn't have this many sensors, booby traps, and unstable support beams.
Indeed, it seemed that whoever designed the support system was either insane or a paranoid genius. Claymore mine traps, triggered by either sensors or old fashioned wires, were scattered throughout the complex. Concussion grenades rigged to pressure plates were on every level. Several sections looked as if some of the supports had been merely lightly tack-welded, and any weight of more than a hundred pounds would cause it to drop away in an extremely loud and visible manner. Himmons only hoped that the primary ground force was making better time than his unit.
***
Finally inside of NERV itself, Epsilon Team had managed to disable the sensors, reroute the signals around their positions, and had, at long last, made it to the office of NERV's commander. Planting breaching charges on the door (after the mazes of traps, sensors, and other nasty things that the teams had reported throughout NERV, Epsilon Team was not about to take any chances), the team leader, Captain Harom, a Perytonian with a knack for this sort of thing, blew the door down as his men performed a video-perfect forced entry.
Harom caught a glimpse of a tall, slender man with a beard behind a desk before the room slammed down in front of it. Shouting orders, his men were already burning away at the obstacle. A full minute later they were through (later analysis revealed that the material was an alloy highly similar to the one used for Depleted Uranium shells), but the desk was empty. Thermographics picked up the trap door under the desk, but it would take them a while to find the trigger.
Harom was displeased at this turn of events. Partially because his quarry had gotten away, and partially because he'd bet three weeks' pay he'd bring in Gendo Ikari in a faster time than anyone else.
Then he stopped, listening carefully at the communications from other teams.
"Team Beta here. The alarms are going off everywhere! What idiot dropped the ball?!"
Team Charlie. Still in the gantries. Opposing forces heading your way, Gamma!"
"Team Delta here. NERV Command Bridge is empty! Repeat, the command bridge is empty? Does anyone know what is going on here?!"
In orbit, Captain Jeremiah Stovesh listened to the reports, confused. This wasn't going like any other NG world they'd ever found. The units were taking command of NERV, but much of it was ancient, disused, or buried in bakelite. The rest was booby-trapped and laden with sensors. It just wasn't making any sense!
***
NERV Commander Shinji Ikari rode the express egress elevator down into the reserve holding pens. Sure enough, there was Unit 01, just waiting for him.
It had taken a while, but he finally understood the full capacity of his father's work, as well as what truly drove Gendo to do what he did. Many years ago, he took ahold of Instrumentailt and somehow guided it back to where he wanted it, with no changes as far as he could tell.
And then the car accident. So much blood, more blood than he'd seen in years. His beloved wife dead, crushed by the passenger side door after it had been hit by another car.
Shortly after that, he found what he was looking for. His father's notes. The notes of both the Akagi's. His own mother's notes. Everyone's notes, project details, and so on. He rebooted the Magi, made deals with them. He found a Rei clone who had actually survived with intact memories. He took up meditation, returning (at least mentally) to a bit of the state of Instrumentality. That was where he found it. Seele's old locations, the locations of the Dead Sea Scrolls, caches of resources, of artifacts less powerful than the Lance of Longinus, but researchable nonetheless.
Nobody foresaw the third Child majoring in History. as the mini-elevator slowed as it approached the Launch Pens, Shinji marvelled at all the myriad ways man had been setting traps for other men over the millenia. Kensuke Aida was a godsend for that sort of lateral thinking. Concussion grenades to toss intruders out of hiding, claymores to kill the enemy, trapped girders sown throughout the Geofront that would drop away, sand in the old bakelite storage units to bury enemy soldiers alive, automated turrets that would fire on anyone without certain IFF signatures built into their ID badges, and land mines built under much of the floor tilings. He had learned all too well, remembering the takeover at the hands of the JSDF as well as NERV's vicious but ultimately ineffectual attempts at repelling the enemies. Preventative measure such as decentralized information lines, using as little as possible that could be hacked, eavesdropped, or decrypted.
Now he had the means to enact Instrumentality, and no government attack dogs would interfere with his plans. He understood, and had come to accept that he was in this for the same reason as his father: for the love of a good woman. No one would be able to stop him now, no matter what new toys the world's governments gave their men. He would prevail.
As his elevator slid to a stop, he stepped off of it and into a piloting chair. As the chair enclosed him, as the plug began insterting itself into Unit 01, the only other sound to be heard was, "I'm coming, Asuka."
***
In orbit, the UEsG command ship Sherman began picking up something. "Captain? I'm getting a huge AT-Field signature on the surface."
Stovesh groaned; nothing would ever be simple in this job, it seemed. "Alert the attack wings to launch. We are on full Invasion Status. Battle Stations."
Meanwhile, within the Geofront's gantries, still unseen, Master Sergeant Himmons Watched as the inverted pyramid lake flash-boiled away. There it was, the purple Eva unit. Only this time it had eight wings of AT-Field light.
Himmons groaned even as he reported it to the Sherman. If memory served, those formed some sort of anti-AT-Field. The pilots would be in for an interesting time.

Commander Mary Gates inwardly cursed her luck, the half-Praxian UEEF officer commanded the VA-6B AE Monster that the Sherman had just deployed from orbit. An experimental unit designed to do what no other veritech could do, stand up to an EVA.
"Now remember Commander, your just to delay it until we can deploy our own EVAs."
Did the Captain really think that he could get them down here in time? It would take close to an hour just to get them in the transport.

Just remember; by now they'll have anti-AT Field ammunition, and mini-Lance missiles, for anything not sporting a PPAT-Field generator.
Check out the fanfiction
Cast in Gold for the ultimate anti-personnel weapon in the hands of a group of Euro-cyborg ninja; blades made from shavings of the Lance...one nick to unprotected flesh, and your target disassociates into a pool of LCL.

I remember that story vaguely; I think I read it back in 2001 or so. It was a short one, but significant.
I was thinking more of an EVA setting where they were actually ready for invasions and attacks by humans. Using anti-guerilla strategies and tactics. And then the UEsG trying to get in there, followed by fighting a full-powered Unit-01 in addition to the NERV ground troops who have the best training and equipment that Nerv's research (and Super-Legal status) can provide.
Add into that Unit-01 at full power, it's wings forming the massive anti-AT-field, with a Shinji who actually knows what he's doing... Suddenly the UEsG is looking at a much nastier fight. I'm not saying they'd outright lose, but it'd be an extremely nasty, brutal fight, with lots of casualties on both sides.

Master Sergeant Himmons looked back at the rest of Charley Team as he fired a suppressive burst at yet another approaching squad of NERV troopers. He was the only one on his team that could still fight and if help didn't arrive soon it promised to get really ugly.
Suddenly the ceiling above the NERV troopers caved in with a cloud of dust. There was the sound of fighting and troopers firing blind, then silence as the second squad of NERV troopers moved forward cautiously. They could see no one but their own downed men.
Then in a series of rapid close quarters attacks by an individual they couldn't see, they too went down.
Major Kusanagi stood up among the fallen troopers. "Master Sargent? Can your men move?"

I figured the Major, being who she is, would be the perfect addition to a GMP assault. And I could see her using the weakend floor sections to her advantage to get to the trapped team quickly.

Oh, absolutely. Major Kusanagi and others like her would be valued infiltrators in an urban environment. Of course, the NERV soldiers would probably freak out at the forty foot tall guys air-dropping in and securing Tokyo-3 itself, not to mention sappers with MD plasma cutters peeling off the armored doors. The sand traps would be a pain, the automated turrets would be troublesome (depending on the upgrades), and if they have some old-school fantasy types aboard the Sherman, the mines under the floor tiles could be solved with whatever the UEsG approved version of Halfling Hurling might be.
The real wild card would be Unit-01 itself. If Shinji still has the full power level at the end of the series, that can be truly dangerous. Sadly, I haven't kept track of all the various additions the UEsG has made (only actually at page 56 of the thread so far), so I can't really work up what would be in their personnel and inventory.

Cool.
wyrmraker wrote:I had another one I've been wrangling around in my gourd at work.

Just remember; by now they'll have anti-AT Field ammunition, and mini-Lance missiles, for anything not sporting a PPAT-Field generator.
Check out the fanfiction

Sounds like they may need reiforcements.

Then in a series of rapid close quarters attacks by an individual they couldn't see, they too went down.
Major Kusanagi stood up among the fallen troopers. "Master Sargent? Can your men move?"
Keep them coming!

Agree!

What about some Bolas?

To be honest, with this scenarioa a Bola would be overkill. They'd only send one in if they wanted the Geofront completely annihilated. And one of the key points of seizing any of the NGE Geofronts is data. This one would be especially valuable; seeing just how far it ranged from the usual baselines the UEsG has encountered thus far, as well as why.

Please feel free. I just had the idea of Shinji being in charge of NERV, and remembering the events of End of Evangelion. The JSDF forces' invasion would stand out quite prominently in his mind, and he would rig the Geofront to be a deathtrap for any conventional forces trying a ground invasion.
Interestingly enough, all I had to do was think like a farmer of illegal drugs. All the information is there, it just needed proper implementation.

Good point and your right the JSDF's invasion would weight very heavly on Shinjis mind after third impact which is why I was wondering why he did not bring Misato back as well as Asuka at the end of the serise.

I seem to remember at least one of the bolo stories had the bolo hacking the planetary com nets and computers, (and attempting to hack its enemies computers) at the same time it was fighting...
part of the issue was the opposing force was essentially human mercs, using a bunch of drone systems as their primary combat units, and so the bolo (and its commander) took over several drop forces to use against the enemies.

out of the way planet asks for a battalion of defense troops, largely for financial reasons, but gets one soldier and a Bolo RML-1138.
eventually some corporate types decide there is something worth taking on the planet, so drop a bunch of AI controlled tank battalions onto the planet to wipe out thel ocals. bolo RML-1138 ("rommel") resolves the issue by hijacking the drone tanks to fight back.

Topping that was the Bolo that hacks the AIs of an entire alien invasion fleet, reprograms it to turn around, return to its point of origin, and allow the slave-conscript soldiers aboard to wreak havoc on their conquerors.

Thanks, Alpha. Some of us DO need to eat, sleep, deal with other issues, and take necessary precautions to retain a fingernail's griphold on sanity.
BAH!, sanity is for the weak and so called normal people.
You got that right!

Yeah, but sanity comes with a paycheck.
That's what you think your getting.

part of the issue was the opposing force was essentially human mercs, using a bunch of drone systems as their primary combat units, and so the bolo (and its commander) took over several drop forces to use against the enemies.
Cool.

"Operation Desert Fox", by Mercedes Lackey & Larry Dixon
out of the way planet asks for a battalion of defense troops, largely for financial reasons, but gets one soldier and a Bolo RML-1138.
eventually some corporate types decide there is something worth taking on the planet, so drop a bunch of AI controlled tank battalions onto the planet to wipe out thel ocals. bolo RML-1138 ("rommel") resolves the issue by hijacking the drone tanks to fight back.
leading up to one of the greatest ending lines for a story ever..
you can actually read it free at baen books;

I think I'll have to read this whole story. It looks interesting.
Wow. Cool! and for the last part:

True but so does insanity if you can harness it and make it work for you, just ask the loonies in our governments.
Sad, but true.

Topping that was the Bolo that hacks the AIs of an entire alien invasion fleet, reprograms it to turn around, return to its point of origin, and allow the slave-conscript soldiers aboard to wreak havoc on their conquerors.
VERY nice indeed.

I plan to try to flesh out my idea for background and the battle of that scenario, but I'm not sure what kind of assets the UEsG would have aboard one of their battleships (I am envisioning a lone ship, one of the larger ones). From what I've read, it looks like the SOP for the UEsG is to investigate and then take over the Geofront, and given their success in the past it would make sense that they might get a little overconfident. Asset content combined with a lack of stats on the new equipment for the UEsG (it can be very difficult to translate power levels from series to series) makes things a little hairy. Some people may not agree with how I get things to play out.
But I'll give it a try. Still only on page 70 of the thread (not quite halfway), but I'm chewing on the scenario.

Indeed...as for TOE, that's pretty open. Newer members are not as likely to be as well-equipped as core members, and may be overconfident from hearing all the reports of the older alliance members on how easy and fun it is to topple an NGE situation. Those teams who remember the zombie-verses, xeno-infestations, chaos-realms, or Cthuluverses, may be prone to shoot first, shoot repeatedly, reload/resupply, and triple-tap for good measure.
As for page 70? Well, we've kinda slid into random silliness after that with a multiplicity of storylines, timeloops, and bleedovers into other threads to the point where sometimes it's hard to tell who's who, where's this, and what's that?
