Still writing the after-action interviews. Sadly, I have a lot of other stuff to do during my days off, and it's interrupting my muse something fierce.
*******
After-Action Report
Captain Jeremiah Stovesh reporting

In accordance with the standard protocols laid out for dealing with a world rated as NG, our forces were given authorization to invade by Command. Local date was 19Mar2028NG. Reports leading up to that have already been filed. The reports from the combat teams have been delivered, along with their video footage.

Once we recieved word on the monumental screwup we had found ourselves in the middle of, I gave the recall order. Thankfully, Major Kusanagi and her squad of Tachikoma tanks were able to proved logistical support for an organized withdrawal, and Kilo-5 helped reign in the Sangheili forces.

After Aleph-7 got assistance in getting Miss Ayanami to her medical area, he retrieved his badly damaged powered armor from the lake of LCL. It is currently in the repair hangar, and he has consented to allow us to attempt to reverse engineer some of the more unusual technologies while he undergoes the Edenii process back at headquarters.

Darkraven's deep infiltration was key to making this operation less than a complete FUBAR. Without a cool head down there, we would have had to kill everyone in NERV, which turned out to be unnecessary.

Shortly after the recall order, we were contacted by the United Nations, who asked us to stand down and enter negotiations. As I am a military leader, I was not qualified to make diplomatic overtures of any sort. I have notified UEsG HQ, and they have diplomats on the way. Our standard complement of troops have been recalled, and are currently aboard the Sherman, and not sight seeing on the ground. The sangheili forces are doing the same, however we have received word from their commander that approximately ten percent of the unggoy troops are unaccouted for. They may be attempting their own investigation of the ground. Where they'll get breathing methane from is beyond me, but that's their concern.

Kilo-5, to their credit, seems to be sharing all intel they collected while on the ground. Granted, I can guarantee that some of the NERV technologies will make their way back to ONI, but we would do the same if the positions were reversed.

The current status is all vehicles and UEsG personnel accounted for. Forty-seven men dead, two hundred and seventeen wounded, some requiring prosthetics. This ends this section of the report. The following attachments are the interviews with the NERV leadership.

Subject: Interview
Ikari, Gendo
"Hello, Mister Ikari. I am Lieutenant Halner."

"Hello, Lieutenant. I am pleased to meet you," Gendo replied warmly. "Out of curiosity, is it military standard in your regiments to wear what appears to be armored swimwear?"

Halner chuckled lightly at that. "Not precisely. I am a member of a species known as Praxians. This is our standard uniform."

Gendo blinked, then smirked. "Alternate intelligent species? Fascinating. My doctorate is in Evolutionary Divergence Theory, so you can see why this interests me so. Now, how can I help you?"

"Mostly we just want to know what's going on here. As you've been informed, we have seen other worlds quite similar to yours, just earlier in the timeline. We were hoping to get your input."

"Certainly," Gendo spoke happily, leaning back in his wheelchair. "Basically, were are still defending the local reality from the Angels, who are attempting to wrest Instrumentality from the last holder of it. After reverse-engineering the biologies of some of the angels from my time in command, we have come up with some very interesting countermeasures. Portable AT-Field generators, energy cannons, regeneration technologies, that sort of thing."

"I see. How does that explain the level of security around your facility?"

"Well, despite SEELE being defunct, there are still cults out there believing in their original mission of turning the entirety of humanity into Tang. Cults that believe that Lilith usurped Adam's true power, and the only way to beg forgiveness of Adam as Lilith's progeny is to find a way for the angels to win.

"At least, that's the public line. The real reason is because in 2015 we were invaded by JSSDF forces. They killed a lot of people in Tokyo-3, and would have killed our pilots as well. Commander Ikari decided that that wasn't a good situation, so he fixed it."

"Commander Ikari, yes... Pardon my saying, but I am glad your son's beard isn't as off-putting as yours."

Gendo laughed outrageously at that. "So am I, really. I work very hard at keeping my beard in the 'Creepy Uncle' stage of grooming. I started doing it to keep most women at bay after my wife's absorption into Unit-01, and it just became almost a trademark after that."

"Well, according to the notes given to me by Sergeant Darkraven..."

"Darkraven. Was that the person in the armor that found the Room of Gaulf?"

"That's him."

"What a decent guy," Gendo commented gently. And at the expression of abject confusion on Halner's face, he said, "As a man in a man-sized machine of war, he could have easily grabbed me, spiriting me away for interrogation at the hands of God knows who. Instead he asked me if I was alright. I felt a little bad for fooling him like I did, and even worse now that I know the battle could have been called off several hours earlier if I had spoken with him. But hindsight's a b****, isn't it?"

"You have a point," Halner admitted ruefully. "So what is this Instrumentality thing your son is attempting?"

"It's Third Impact, but on a microscopic scale. Limited to a single person. He calculates that with the power of a limited Instrumentality, he can bring his wife out of her coma. She is currently suspended in a tank of LCL that contains no human essence."

"What do you think his chances of succeeding are?"

Gendo smirked, pushing up his glasses and then steepling his fingers. "Quite good, actually. So long as he can properly control the power, much as he did the last time, I am personally calculating his success rate at twelve percent, with standard deviations, of course."

"What? How is twelve percent anywhere near an acceptable possibilty?" Halner demanded, appalled at Gendo's glee.

"The chance of Shinji even being able to synchronize with Unit-01 was calculated at .000000009% in early 2015. The chance of Shinji being able to successfully trigger Third Impact was .000045%, and the chance he could control it without his mind breaking was .00000000003%. Trust me Lieutenant, NERV has always operated on the long odds."

"It just seems like an unsafe manner to conduct such an important operation," Halner grumbled. "What do you think of your son's activities?"

A hand slapped the table lightly as Gendo exclaimed, "I'm damn proud of him! He knows what he wants, and is willing to do what it takes to get it. I always knew Shinji could excell at whatever he put his mind to. I just wish I hadn't been so wrapped up in my own grieving to have been able to raise him."

"What do you mean?"

Gendo sighed heavily. "When he was very young, I sent him to live with a teacher of his. As the new director of NERV, which had just gotten super-legal status from the UN, using the excuse of Security Precautions was simple enough to allay any suspicions, as well as keep SEELE away from Shinji, so that they couldn't find a way to turn him into a spy.

"Unfortunately, I was so engrossed in my own machinations that I basically ignored him for most of his upbringing. I think I saw him twice before he arrived in Tokyo-3, and each time turned out poorly.

"In any event, since I was willing to turn the world into Tang in order to get back the woman I loved, I honestly had almost no time to raise a child. Rei Ayanami was an exception, but she was raised in a very specific way to be my tool. I should have done better by the both of them," he ended mournfully.

"Interesting. What about now?"

"Now? Shinji is leading the world's science community in fighting extra-terrestrial life forms, NERV is a wholly positive idea, rather than the cluster of neurotic paranoia that it used to be. He didn't make the same mistakes that I did, and with the exception of his wife being in a coma, he's pretty happy."

"And Ayanami?"

"Rei has had a thing for Shinji for a long time now. He's let her down gently several times, but she just keeps gravitating back to him. I was hoping she would grow out of it in college, but I have no idea what to do about it. I guess she's just condemned to live with a broken heart."

The file had been downloaded, and all Nova Satori, supreme head of the UEsG GMP, awaited was her audience. Within a few minutes, Captain Ayanami-Hunter walked through the door and sat down.

"Nova, what was so important that I couldn't even return to my ship yet after my enforced leave?"

"What," Nova smirked, "you mean the orders from command to actually *take* leave? The leave that you spent the entirety of 'riding your wild horse'?"

Rei blushed heavily, but still nodded.

Nova reclined slightly in her chair. "I know that there are standing orders to inform you whenever we deal with a NG-Type world. And we had a nasty one."

Rei sat upright, blinking once. "How bad was it?"

"The short answer is forty-seven dead, over two hundred wounded. These were mostly marines, cyclone-clad commandos, and some borrowed ODSTs."

"What went wrong?" Rei asked, now in professional mode.

Nova sighed heavily. "Poor intel, for the most part. But more damningly, we got complacent. We expected pretty much all of the NG worlds to be similar. So we weren't really expecting anything too different when we saw Antartica gone and glowing, NERV fully operational and fighting angels. The date was 2028, but some intel wonk signed off on it, saying in his report that such a thing wouldn't be unexpected, given the dimensional chronal drifting and variance that we've encountered. After that, the uppers in High command said to get it done."

"I see. Who was in command?"

"Stovesh, on the Sherman." Rei nodded; Stovesh was an excellent ship driver. "In fact, I have his after-action report here."

Rei's eyes narrowed as her mind belatedly called up details. "Wait. Sherman... Wasn't that ship loaded with more science gear and less armament?"

"Sort of. We had a few allies on board. Urzu Unit, Kilo-5, and Aleph Squad."

"Interesting. Urzu Unit is known for excellence in the field, and everyone knows that Kilo-5, despite being obvious spies for the Office of Naval Intelligence, are peerless when they get their boots on the ground. Although I am unfamiliar with Aleph Squad."

Nova's teeth ground at the mention of them. "Aleph Squad were originally the United Earth Government's hatchet men. Tough, nasty, willing to get the job done no matter the cost. Now, they are led by Aleph-7, Jeremiah Darkraven. He was an early extradimensional, showed up during the First Robotech War. He served there, as well as after when he worked directly for the UEG council while the Army of the Southern Cross was really in charge. That's when I met him. God, but Field Marshall Leonard hated him. So did Major Fredericks, but for different reasons. Fredericks wanted him strung up for treason, but the
UEG wouldn't let him.

"He ended up joining us when Sterling jacked Wolff's ship and headed for Tirol. He was assigned to Aleph Squad, given the number seven, and has stuck to it ever since. He is crazy, imaginitive, and has access to resources that he refuses to share, even under orders. He favorite excuse is, 'Sorry, you're not Need-To-Know on that.' Sadly, the smirking ******* is usually accurate. I think that only Admiral Hayes could order that jerk to cough up his specialized gear."

"Sounds like a handful. Why would he be sent into classified operations if he and his team are such difficult pieces of work?"

"Because they get the job done," Nove replied, shrugging. "Unconventional warfare is the only form of warfare they know. Shock, awe, psychological warfare, assassination, you name it. I don't think any of the Alephs would stand being in an old-fashioned stand-up war."

"So what about the after action report?"

Nova grinned. "You're gonna LOVE this one."

Stats on Darkraven? I really don't like posting actual stats, but I'll list how he is set up.

We dislike how most of Palladium is blisteringly light on skills, especially for high end military. So we created a new class by combining CS Commando with CS Nautical Commando Specialist, added in the option of MOS (Darkraven took the CS Sniper package from one of the Rifters), and added in the Golden Age retro-viral boosters from Chaos Earth (it made sense to us that the CS would use that tech on it's best soldiers). We then added in the 'Keep what you kill' philosophy, wherein these guys can bring in a piece of tech, and the CS tech specialists will go over it throoughly before handing it back. For example, if one of the CS Seals were to bring in a supply of Naruni weapons, they would go over it (psi-teks and psychic operators), note down anything unknown, and give the weapons back. In the case of brand new, never befor seen gear, they are authorized to purchase it from the CS Seal who turned it in (generally at half market value). Our reasoning was that this branch was the smart ones, and why take away the tools of a deep cover operative? Why make them cache their best equipment out in the middle of nowhere just so they can come in and make their reports?

Of course, we also dislike the canon view of the CS leaders and outlook. So we made Joseph Prosek II with the brain and farseeing outlook that he's supposed to have. The CS SEAL division reports to him. They go out into the world, performing deep cover operations (usually as mercenaries) and interfering with the actions of real enemies of the CS States. D-Bee farmers would get largely ignored, whereas active plotters against the CS (terrorists and the like) but be neutralized. We like to run our games on less than a government full of blind hate.

We also reward characters with a good background with something a little different. In Darkraven's case it was the mage version of Lore: Magic and a limited PPE pool equal to his PE of 28. But he grew up in Dwoemer, his father is a high ranking member of the Vanguard and a high ranking member of the Dwoemer Defense Force. Why does a CS sympathizer like a member of the Vanguard live in Dwoemer? Because they are no threat whatsoever to the Coalition States, unless the CS starts something.

Darkraven's brother is a powerful LLW (a character in a previous game, same setting), and his brother's friend (possibly a half brother; their parents tended to have a few drinks and 'get around', if you know what I mean) is a potent Battle Magus (my own character in that former game). When Darkraven was tested as a child, he was seen as having almost no talent for magic. His father, a powerful LLW, wasn't having any of that. So Darkraven was raised with alchemical boosters added to most of his meals, as well as tutors to teach him everything a mage would need to know.

Unfortunately, the testing was accurate. Granted, Darkraven could probably teach a LLW the basics of casting a few first level spells; they were drilled into his head enough practically since birth. So his father contacted their CS ally, Joseph Prosek II (we also figured there is little chance that the Vanguard doesn't know who they are dealing with there) and got his son enrolled in the CS military. Tests there showed him to be capable, hardy, and knowledgable, so he was sent for CS Seal testing at the old US Navy Great Lakes facility.

There probably is no member iof the CS military more knowledgable on mystical theory than Jeremiah Darkraven. He is equipped with a lot of unusual equipment that actually isn't too over the top. He prefers to wear an environmetally modified suit of Battler body armor with a heavily worn and midified old CS Dead Boy helmet. He prefers to use the JA-11 rifle as his primary sniping weapon. He also pilots a modified Silver Wolf power armor (made of non-glitter armor; we used the same MDC percentage difference as shown between the Glitter Boy and the Shadow Boy), and his preferred heavy robot is a modified Ulti-Max. The Silver Wolf has the TW enhancements of Armor Bizarre, Invisibility: Superior, and Impervious to Energy, the sensors are boosted with robot models, and the issue particle beam cannon is replaced with a single-fire rail gun. His Ulti-Max is mostly as written in the book, excepting that the rail gun is replaced with a single round rail gun (I used the NG-R50 Mini Rail Gun as inspiration), and about 15% more armor was added. It has the TW enhancement of Chameleon Cloaking and Sound Cloaking.

He also posesses a few TW gadgets that he traded for. Given that his brother deals almost exclusively with the Nerf Warrior (another of my characters, same setting, alternate game), the gadgets tend to be utility items rather than combat. The Nerf Warrior's trademark is using toys as TW base items. Function follows form in TW, and can anyone honestly say that a Nerf rifle would be a less stable platform for a TW weapon than a Wilks? Or that a modified sword hilt is inherently better than a toy lightsabe handle for any of the blade spells? Especially Lightblade?

His TW items are things like Escape, Breathe Without Air, stuff like that. He also has a Talisman of Dimensional Portal that directs to a specific spot on Rifts Earth, where there is a cottage near a small ley line nexus. That's where he meets his brother to get caught up and for trading. He also has a TW communications rig to contact his brother across the dimensional boundaries.

In the RDF, the only real addition he recieved would be RPA Elite: Spartan Destroid, and have a massive, custom-made sniper rifle built for it (the particle cannon on top of the Glaug Officer's Battle Pod turned into a rifle).

As far as stats go, I don't have the notebook in front of me (we moved recently, and I'm still shuffling stuff around. It is said that three moves is worse than a fire), and I don't like posting stats. But Darkraven is more fun to soft RP than to put in game. I find that there are no GMs out here that want to run Robotech, and even if they did they wouldn't allow me to bring in a Rifts character. The GMs around here don't like it when people bring crossovers into their game. Interestingly (or perhaps unsurprisingly) these same people as players invariably try to *play* crossover characters made from no less than two Palladium settings (usually whatever the local setting is, and then add super powers).

I liked Darkraven, and thought he had a lot of potential. But that dream died when that GM moved away, and that game withered on the vine. So instead I loaded him up in the crossover thread, where he would actually do something withoput being one of those SI Gary Stu characters. He's about the right power level, just the right amount of wierd, and smart enough to know how to appear cool and collected in front of the brass.

Oh, and his ability to swear in Gobblely, Demongogian, Dragonese, and Tirolian are second only to native speakers.

And as fasr as Rei hooking up with him, she has her work cut out for her. His lifestyle doesn't leave him a lot of time for relationships (yes, he makes extensive use of brothels), and he is constantly being reassigned to different missions. Rei would be hunting him down for quite some time before she managed to even find him, much less make her claim. I'm not saying she couldn't or wouldn't, but I am leaving that one up in the air. After all, there are a lot of divergent universes that a 28 year old Rei Ayanami can stumble into.

Still going. Got one more interview to go, and then the commentary after that.
***
Subject: Interview
Ayanami, Rei

"Someone needs to let me out of these restraints, or I'm going to start hurting people."

Maya Ibuki grit her teeth. Every time, Rei had the same complaints. Maya was beginning to fondly remember the quiet, unassuming girl that Rei had been in her teen years. Her college years had exposed her to a lot of different attitudes, and her near-albino appearance had gotten her a lot of negativity from the normal students.

Since her return from college, Rei had changed. While properly emotional, instead of the emotionally stunted child she had been, she also was very, very angry, bitter, and unhappy. And of course, when things didn't go her way she tended to threaten people.

She had stopped directly threatening Maya some years back. But after getting the taste slapped out of her mouth after saying, "I hope you die in a fire made of AIDS", she toned herself down around Maya.

"Rei, you've overextended your AT-Field again. It'll take a few days for your body to stabilize in the LCL tank. In the meantime, you can at least answer a few questions from the Sergeant and his... er, are you his assistant?" Maya asked, licking her lips. Yes, she was very happy in her current relationship, but this woman... Yum.

The two meter blonde valkyrie's lips twitched. "More like military attache. I'm here to accompany Master Sergeant Himmons as part of the Mutual Assistance treaty between the UNSC and UEsG. In addition, I'm here as bodyguard detail, in case Miss Ayanami flips out again," Naomi-010 stated flatly, not even seeing the younger woman's attention.

"That won't happen," Rei inserted. "In this tube, my abilities are limited. Besides, even if I were to try, I'd probably discorporate again. And let me state that it's not as much fun as some of the fetishists out there think it is."

Himmons and Naomi blinked at that. Himmons coughed, then said, "First, our forces acted on crappy intelligence. The brass jumped the gun on this mission. If I'd had my way, I would've rather had this be a diplomatic mission. But the intel analysts insist on secrecy, subversion, and all that crap. I mean, I'm a veteran, and have been with the UEsG from the very beginning. But hey, what do I know?" he finished bitterly.

"Sergeant, I'm sure that now that everythings out in the open, we'll be able to get along," Maya soothed out, even as her hands adjusted the LCL tube's mixture. Ayanami and Himmons did note that her angle kept Petty Officer Naomi-010 in the edge of her vision.

"I hope so. I'm tired of being on srewup missions that are supposed to be milk runs."

"Could've been worse, Himmons," Naomi edged out.

"Don't I know it," Himmons responded, running his fingers through his close-cropped, graying hair. "At least it all stopped before it could get there. And I'm damn glad you showed up, Petty Officer. None of my men had issues with a real estate deal gone wrong."

Naomi looked blankly at that, while Rei nodded sagely and Maya smirked. The old Heinlein joke was always a good one.

"So, questions. Sorry if I'm less than subtle, ladies. I'm just an old marine, not some intel higher-up. First, the whole Third Impact thing. So far as I know, we've never seen it. We've always worked to prevent it. But what the hell *is* it?"

Rei sighed. "Ibuki was incapacitated during the event, but I was an essential portion of it. Basically, the barrier keeping all living things separate collapsed. Every living thing on earth turns to LCL, and all of humanity is at peace because suddenly they all understand each other because they are all now one entity, a sea of reddish-orange fluid."

"Wait, wait, wait," Himmons stopped her, holding up a hand. "Red oceans? Empty buildings? Whispers in the air? And giant head on the horizon?"

"That was the scene, yes," Rei confirmed, a little startled at the man's accuracy.

"Damn. We've seen a world like that. We got creeped out, marked it, and left. We'll have to go back now that we know what the hell it was. At least now we have a better idea why your head was a few thousand feet high on the horizon."

"I'm glad I didn't see that," Maya mumbled, a little pale.

"I was on the squad that did," Himmons confirmed. "It was like the whole place was haunted. We just dropped markers and bailed out."

"I'm starting to think this whole parallel dimension thing is full of wierd stuff that going to make me doubt my place in an orderly universe."

"Petty Officer, pretty much every universe I've been to makes me doubt the existence of an orderly universe," Himmons sighed out. "I have seen magic, super powers, planet shattering super weapons wielded by hormonal teenagers, and enough wierd crap to make me believe that humanity has never had so much as a clue about physics. Darkraven comes from a world where magic runs around in visible rivers of energy, for crying out loud."

"Out of curiosity, where is that Darkraven?" Rei asked. Only Maya got the warning sign of her voice going to the tone she used when she was a teenager.

"Rumor among Aleph squad is that he went directly to HQ for debriefing, and probably reassignment. Makes sense, since Aleph-9 is being promoted to squad leader. Why?"

"Just curious," she demurred calmly. Naomi caught none of the subtlety inherent in her attitude, Himmons thought something seemed off considering how vocal she had been, and Maya KNEW that there was something wrong with Rei if she was suddenly behaving like this.

"So that's Third Impact solved," Himmons mused aloud, reviewing his clip board. "What about the angels?"

"They will keep coming after Shinji until the angel eggs are exhausted," Maya stated, finally turning back to the discussion. "There were a lot more angel embryos out in the world than the seventeen foretold in the Dead Sea scrolls. So every few months we have tio deal with a new angel. At least none of them to date are as powerful as Zeruel."

"Very interesting. And the mini angels upstairs?"

"Gendo Ikari's side project. He has a theory that if we can understand the angels, we might be able to comprehend what it is they want. And as we had the bodies of most of the angels, cloning them was fairly easy using the Eva regeneration methods. Unfortunately, without their cores they are little more than animals, so that didn't pan out so well. So we just store and study for now. We had been planning on releasing them into the Geofront as a last defensive resort, but the code on the door getting changed cancelled that plan."

"I never thought I'd be thankful for Darkraven's role in a mission," himmons grumbled ruefully, "but here I am. Criminy. What about you, Petty Officer? You got any questions for them?"

"Not really," Naomi replied. "The tech here is well below our standard, and while the biological technologies here might interest the lab wonks, I am a more practical operator. As a Spartan, I really don't see much here that would assist me in future missions."

"That's too bad," Maya mumbled. "I could think of a few things that'd be fun..."

Himmons coughed at that, looking away in slight embarrassment. In his late fifties, as both a father and grandfather, he was no stranger to such things, but that didn't mean he got a lot of blatant exposure.

"I have a question for the Petty Officer. How is your tech so far in advance of our own?"

Naomi looked at the girl in the tube, floating there nude, her hair a nimbus around her brow. "Our local year is 2553. We have faster-than-light travel, anti-tank lasers, advanced biological modifications for super soldiers, powered armors that react like a second skin, reliable cybernetics, flash-cloning of organsd for transplantation, and so on. Our former enemies have plasma weapons, energy shielding, and better faster-than-light travel capabilities than we do. You have that AT-Field, and the hand cannons are interesting, but as I am unfamiliar with the tech I'd rather stick with my issued gear, thanks."

"Holy crap," Maya whispered at the matter-of-fact way the statuesque woman replied to Rei's question.

"There is one other thing," Rei asked, smirking blatantly. "Do you have someone waiting for you back home, Naomi?"

I am unfamiliar with that Naomi. So I just used Kilo-5's Naomi-010 to simulate the various agreements made between the UNSC and the UEsG. And since she's a Spartan-II, with all of the side effects of the augmentation, her being flirted with by Maya Ibuki has the potential for hilarity. Especially since Naomi-010 is entirely unequipped to handle such matters. 100% pure military, and if she ends up in a non-combat situation, she tends to lock up pretty hard (Mortal Dictata covers this thoroughly). John-117 would just let it pass over his head, but Naomi-010 has been exposed to that stuff enough to not be able to ignore it.

Naomi - is a character mentioned in the CROSS ANGE Rondo of Angel and Dragon television series and the main protagonist of the CROSS ANGE Rondo of Angel and Dragon tr. PS Vita game. She is a Norma and a Para-mail pilot from Arzenal.

Naomi's name was on the blood-stained pilot suit handed down to Ange. While Salia ripped off the name tag, she mentioned that the previous owner had died. (CROSS ANGE: "Unyielding Spirit") .

In fact, she was not dead but in a coma. After recovering, she began fighting DRAGONs again with the pilots of Arzenal's First Troop in order to repay a monetary debt.

She joined the UEEF for the steady paycheque and the feeling belonging that came with being in a team. She pilots a standard para-mail, at least at the start, it's good enough to deal with F-22s, 35s and the assorted UN helicopters.

The way I wrote this Rei is that she's primarily angry (like, Ryoga Hibiki levels of anger), but doesn't have any focus for it. Angry, bitter, and alone (although the loneliness is more subconsciously self-imposed). I just extrapolated how she might turn out once Third Impact is resolved, and she's off whatever medication Gendo had her on. I figured her development through college would be something of a disappointment to her, given her physical difference from others (Japan has a nasty reputation for that), her repuatation as an Eva pilot, and then the additional twist of having all of humanity's memories filtered through her (not the internet, thank heavens).

And now she has an opening, a possible way to free herself from her cycle of depression and angst. Between the guy she fought, the people interviewing her, and the sheer potentials of multiple realities, her mind is really cooking with possibilities.

Will she try to find Darkraven? Maybe. Will she set out on a quest of self-discovery? Probably. Will Rei Ayanami-Hunter want to assist her? Probably not. This Rei tends to be a bit more temperamental (she got that from Asuka. Look at all the crap Asuka dished out without repercussion), far more confrontational, and has a vastly fouler mouth than most Ayanamis.

Any way she goes, she's going to find out new things abolut herself.

A last blurb for the end of the weekend. I just had to find a way to insert this.
********
"Pause." Captain Ayanami-Hunter's eyes were wide at these revelations. A Gendo who was actually a decent sort? A Shinji who was level-headed and on top of things? A Rei with anger management issues and a chip on her shoulder the size of Jupiter? "What insanity is this, Nova?"

"No insanity. The combat footage isn't doctored, and these are the raw interviews; Command is getting the edited versions."

"I just... I can't..."

Nova frowned. She hadn't expected her friend to react this badly. "Rei, this world was a fustercluck from the word 'Go'. But now we have confirmation of what Third Impact was supposed to be. The fighting was unfortunate, but we have every indication of this being an actual potential partnership, rather than the takeovers of most of the other NG-rated worlds."

Rei slumped back in her chair. For some reason, her old scars were itching again, but she dismissed that as psychosomatic. "This is just incredulous. Gendo's plan to retrieve Yui was known to me. This Gendo got his wish. What happened to Yui afterwards? Shinji reset humanity, and now is attempting to reactivate his father's work? Is there any goodness to be found in this, Nova?"

"Quite a bit, really. We haven't listened to the third interview. Shinji Ikari will be answering questions. If anyone has the answers you want, it'll be the new commander of NERV."

"Is that world's Rei Ayanami that much of a psycho?"

"Actually, I think she's just an unhappy person. Angry at the world and needing to take it out on someone. Military service wouldn't help her. What she really needs is time to find out who she wants to be."

"Do you think she'll pursue Darkraven?"

Nova shrugged. "I have no idea. And Darkraven is having issues of his own currently. He finally underwejnt the Edenii process, and there was a... complication. He went in at age forty, and came out age fourteen."

"How did that happen? Was a tech not paying attention?"

"Darkraven says it was probably an interaction between the protoculture use in the process and his own alchemical treatments as a youth. The scientists are agreeing; apparently protoculture and magical energy doesn't like to mix."

"So what, he's on leave because he's too small to fit into his equipment?"

"Not at all. We found a mission that he's perfectly suited for."
***
"Darkraven, your new mission is an infiltration run. You will be posing in a japanese classroom as the son of an american military officer; your 'father' will be your primary intelligence contact.

"You cover will easily go towards explaining your lack of knowledge in local customs as well as the inevitable linguistic errors."

"Understood, sir. What is the mission?"

"Your mission will be to enter this junior high school and find out why the government has so much surveillance there. Especially since it's a satellite school for the dregs of the classes. While it seems like an odd mission, we already have confirmation of some sort of event getting ready to happen there.

"While you conduct your mission, our intelligence forces will be attempting to determine why seventy percent of the moon's mass was recently vaporized, and how."

"I understand, sir. There seems to be a lot of subtlety in play on this mission. I will get the data required while the scientists work on how to fix this serious issue with my ageing."

wyrmraker wrote:Stats on Darkraven?

Awsome! So is he still "with" the CS, or is with the Robotech forces now?

wyrmraker wrote:Still going. Got one more interview to go, and then the commentary after that.

Please tell me you will start another story when this one is done.

I'm kinda glad they didn't send the OTHER Naomi with Himmons.

Ya, that might have been bad.

wyrmraker wrote:I am unfamiliar with that Naomi.

Thanks for the info!

Any way she goes, she's going to find out new things abolut herself.

Well, I hope things work out for her.

I don't know how well I'll be able to write more with these folks. My brain is trying to move to other areas. But I will leave the residents of that Eva world up in the air for others to play with.

As for Darkraven, the CS has him listed as Deceased. He is firmly with the Robotech forces, even if he can still contact his brother and occasionally return to Rifts Earth.

Ah, the perils of crossdimensional citizenship. In my Rifts Greater New England/Paladin Steel and in the UEsG, there's Avatar Registration, where the various versions of a person are catalogued and ID'ed for sanity's sake. Needless to say, the Evangleion characters have BIG avatar files(especially important after an Evil Post-Impact Shinji tried to infiltrate UEsG Tokyo-4 with the intent of making everybody as miserable as he was. Fortunately, he got splashed before he could do any real damage, but a number of security guards were disciplined for passing the guy and a number of fangirls injured before he got taken down).

Privet Eric had been through the gate eight times never knowing what to expect each time his team scouted each new world. Each one a cake walk compared to some of the stories he heard from his superiors. But this one, this was not what he was use to.

It was chaos.

Sand was blasting up from under him as he dodge machine-gun fire. Men around him got cut down from large bunkers and nest in front. Tank traps where everywhere with men trying to hide behind and use as firing possessions. Their rifles contently firing till it made clanking sounds signaling it being emptied.

Eric couldn't see his commander or his fire squad, but he can hear them over the tac net. Commander was barking orders to get back to the gate, Mendez kept getting hit by gun fire but was shrugging them off of his cyclones armor, Jessica found herself tending to wounded on the far side of the beach. Eric was huddled with two others at one of the tank traps. Both wore olive helmets and cotton uniforms. One of the helmets had a white star painted on it.

One of them started to yell at him. "Who the Hell are you?"

"Privet Eric Shepherd UEEF Marine Core."

"The f*cks UEEF?" the other yelled.

"And what are you wearing? I've never seen equipment like that. How are you even carrying that?"

"Long story. Where the Hell are we?"

The solders gave a surprised look. "Normandy Beach."

It took Eric a second to think, then swore.

"This is D-Day!"

"No sh*t!" Cried one of the troopers.

Then the cover they where hiding behind started to light up with bullets. One of them took several in the chest and crumbled into a bloody mess in the sand, The other took a swift death to the head. Eric only survived thanks to his armor and helmet. But nothing could prepare him from seeing that. Shock took hold.

"Eric! Eric do you copy!" The tac net was still on. "Eric, Mendez is pushing up the beach near your position. Do you copy?"

Eric tried to speak but kept chocking on his words till finally he could force the words out, "Copy Sir."

Next thing he knew Mendez slammed into the trap with a loud thud. "OW!"

Mendez gathered himself and smiled at Eric. "Guess I should stop trying to slid in this thing huh?"

Eric was still in shock. Mendez was confused till he noticed the bodies next to him. "Mother Maria."

He looked back at Eric. "We need to get back through the gate, Sergeants orders." He got up and started to head back to the end of the beach. "Come on move it!"

It took Eric all his will just to get back up. He was knocked down to the ground by machine-gun fire again.

"Sh*t!" Mendez soon charged back to him. Eric was still okay, but pot-marks where starting to show everywhere. "Sir," Mendez yelled "Eric's gone catatonic on me!"

"Then get him out of there!" The voice rang in his helmet.

"Come on Eric don't do this!" Eric still didn't respond, gun fire still kicking up around them. Mendez started to get irritated by the gun nest. "Aw screw this!"

He swung himself away from the trap and out in the open. The cyclone he wore was a 041 series equipped with his personal favorite: HEAP missles.

The hatches popped open and let loose a swarm of high explosives like angry bees. They streaked in the sky in white trails that all on the beach and looking down it could see. Who ever was in the gun nest and the bunkers around it would never see the light of day again, only the light of fiery death where the last things. The bunkers lit up and vanished in a show of smoke and fire. Everyone on the beach hit the ground hard.

When everything was clear the machine guns stopped. There was an air of silence as the G.I's picked themselves back up. Non of them knew what just happened, or who done it. Some swear it was men in metal suits, but that would be shot down by higher ups. Whoever did it though was long gone.

********************************************************************************************************************

"Well, I feel a lot better now." Mendez exclaimed as he walked through the gate with Eric in tow. His Sergent however wasn't so.

"This report is going to be a headache."

I could probably keep up with the misadventures of Darkraven interacting with the various anime worlds. Well, the ones that I'm currently watching, anyways. After all, he's nowhere near as nastily powerful as some of me and my wife's soft RP characters (a half god that can pull off about any miracle in the bible, a female summoner known for REALLY good reason as the Cauldron of Hate, the wrangler of Cthulu, Nerima-grade martial artists, a 200 year old teenager Hutt jedi, a born sociopath who can negate just about anything out of the norm for the region within 1/4 mile of his position). Darkraven is actually pretty normal, insofar as characters go.

But I do marvel at these elaborate setups that I go through for my little jokes. Like Rei screaming "F*** that! You kill that with FIRE". I really wanted to use that, but had to figure out how to make it happen and have it make sense. I may be getting overly complicated in my set ups. Oh well.

"Well, I feel a lot better now." Mendez exclaimed as he walked through the gate with Eric in tow. His Sergent however wasn't so.

"This report is going to be a headache."

Nova reviewed the logs again of the latest field incident. Fire Team Omaha found themselves thrown into what was considered one of the great battles of human history. Time dilation was always a consideration on scouting runs, but it was practically unheard of a mission happening during a historic event. "Till now." Nova sighed under breath.

Sergent Ashton's paranoia came in handy for this one. His team would have just gone in with nothing but CVR-5's if he didn't chew out his Lieutenant about better equipment. To Nova that was insubordination if she was in charge of that team, but she never read Ashton's background report till now. The Lieutenant did before this mission.

Ashton during one of his first forays through the gate his team was almost wiped out due to poor intel and being under equipped. Since then he never went on missions without substantial fire power. Though what are the chances of running into giant alien cockroaches she thought.

The last video started to play. Privet Shepherds helmet cam showed his view point. It played out like an old war movie in a first person view. There he was, right behind a tank trap with two others. Then just like the written report said he witnessed their deaths right then and there. The one with the star helmets head popped like a melon, the other torn to shreds, all just a few inches from him.

"Poor kid." Nova thought out loud. Eric was only 18, a green horn by definition thru and thru. His background report said he signed on for missions like these, but Nova could tell that the kid just did it because of all the stories that gets out to the public. All of them the good grandiose adventure stories of wonderful exotic places and things. In reality those are few and far between. A lot of those stories where just cleaned up for public consumption, others just suppressed from getting out to the public. No one wanted to hear tales of solders dieing horrific deaths.

The video ended with Corporal Mendez blowing away half of the Atlantic Wall. Nova leaned back and closed her eyes. The world for now has been marked for zero ground operations, Space observation was only permitted till the higher-ups decide to send diplomats to the Allied forces.

Nova looked back at the final part of the written report. Ashton's final statements said that Privet Shepherd has been committed to a psychiatric facility for PTSD, Mendez on the other hand had been reprehended for excessive force.

"What a load of bull." Nova would have just left Mendez be for that one given the situation. But that wasn't her call.

Nova soon filed the reports away, powered down her computer and went on her way out of the office. That was the last of several bad reports she received that day. Looks like I'm going to the bar tonight, again she thought.

That could be true or some will just see it as another fight in the endless conflicts of war.

I would be intrested to see what kind of top secret reports got writen up about them by the Allied Commanders.

Speaking of Commanders, who would actually be in charge of the UEsG by this point? I could see a coalition of leaders, but who are the ones really at the top?

Wanna really blow some Allied minds? Make some of Omaha Team obviously BLACK...given the racial attitudes of the time(the Red Tails were still having problems finding acceptance, despite their exemplary records), black soldiers possessing that sort of firepower would drive some 1940s' types gonzo.

Interesting enough, I was reading a collection of Bill Mauldin's 'Willie and Joe' cartoons and a rather cosmopolitan cast of background characters show up....including several black soldiers, a Muslim(apparently part of the local forces in North Africa), and of course the Germans and Italians...all of whom share the common fact that they're all unshaven, dog-tired, and possessed of the same haggard war-weariness of the Americans.

Hunters are still missing, but advanced medical treatments make the core-world UEsGers virtually immortal(or at least damned long-lived), Leonard, for his fair, but decisive, handling of both the Robotech Masters, and NGE-Earth-1, has probably been voted into office for life. Breetai, who survived thanks to the intercession of EVAs, may have retired from military affairs and gone into politics, at least in an advisory role(for shock effect, have him and Leonard actually bury any past animosity and become good buddies). NGE-Earth 1 likely has some fairly liberal and moderate unknowns representing them. Athena is probably still in defacto charge of Olympus. There's probably a bunch of other series-unnamed characters representing their worlds.
Mind-blower? Imagine if the REGIS wanted a say in UEsG affairs, seeing how important the Flower of Life and Protoculture is to its economy.

The Gunbuster'verse's rep to the UEsG is most likely Kazumi Amano, since she's the older, more mature, but still has command presence. Noriko's her field troubleshooter.

You know I have a question, what about the AUL, the E.B.S.I.S and other unalined powers/groups back int RT Prime, what is their reaction to all of this?

THis is RPG 2nd Edition Earth...the AUL got stomped flat early on, and any independents that remained have been too caught up in the post-Gate Opening 'gold rush' to cause much more than a hiccup in UEsG affairs. There WAS some talk about some of the territories on Earth occupied by the Invid going their own way, but the UEsG offered such good reconstruction incentives that the diehards either folded or moved offworld/pit-dimension to found their own WORLDS.
The UEsG EBSIS is more like Glitterboy2098's Baltic-based consortium..more benign than mustache-twirling old school totalitarian, and again, more eager to get their piece of the profits rolling in from interdimensional trade to want to rock the boat.

Mendez is from Mexico, does that count?

Anyways the others are just ambiguous, really I only wrote the first entry because I'm trying this whole stream of thought writing my friend told me about, have one idea and run with it. Tried it with the second entry too.

Oh well.

  Wow..., I'm almost afraid to ask what would be a challenge for those guys.

Now that sounds like a damn fine plan to me.

Agree!

Nice info.

Post-RoD, despite so many Zentraedi ships lying around, the UEG established a hammerlock on deep space travel, since they already held the high ground and they didn't want just anybody with functional giant warships. So they impounded as many ships as they could find, and established the best repair and refit facilities(easy enough, once they acquired a Factory Satellite). Then they put out the carrot. Anybody wanting access to new cheap resources had two choices; scavenge the ruins of Earth, or if they wanted offworld riches, they had to go through the UEG. While there were a few holdouts who zealously worked on restoring their own Zentraedi ships or building their own starships, most indies simply lacked the means, expertise, and capital to build their own or develop their own colonies or offworld industries from scratch. The Global Initiative just offered such generous terms and cheaper service that it was simply easier to ship out with the UEG, who'd co-develop any rugged worlds, and fend off any hostile aliens. Some of the indies resented this, but there wasn't a whole lot they could do but grumble,
The Gates changed that. Now there was access to habitable worlds, other Earths, reachable through a Gateway. Inhabited, in many cases, by people who in many cases had familiar cultures, spoke the same languages, but were different enough that they had things to trade for. The Sino Republic might not like fighting Zentreadi renegades over a former Tirolian colony world, but they found easier to trade with the Shinzu Empire 'next door'. The Judean League might have enough clout on its own to establish a New Zion colony, but finding enough commonality with the Jewish organizations of several alternities, they were able to match and pay off the UEsG loans and get their own world. The indies were simply too busy trying to make money trough Gate-trade that they couldn't be bothered to argue with the UEsG, and the efforts further deflected and dispersed any anti-UEsG sentiment.

Don;t be so hard on yourself, Alpha. You'll one day find the energy to complete that hundred-page manuscript. It's simply a matter of time, patience, and persistence.

If you're unfamiliar with Bill Mauldin, he's easy enough to find online. Looking at his body of work, he's almost subversive in his depiction of the American soldier and military culture(especially compared to his contemporaries in such sources as Stars and Stripes of the time), but his GIs are both the essential American serviceman and the archetypal footslogging infantryman of history. Napoleon and Alexander the Great likely had their own Willies and Joes in the ranks. He's also a good alternate eye on the progress of events in WW2 and the inanities that sometimes happened;
A few of my favorites:
*The (Mechanized) Cavalry officer, sorrow etched on his face as he uses his service pistol to put his faithful, but crippled, steed...a jeep..out of its misery.

*Willie radioing to an artillery unit; "I got a target for you, but you're going to have to wait for it..."(we see he's stuck in a foxhole under a German assault gun)

*The American MP guarding three Italian soldier POWs. "Well, if it ain't 'Slinky' Costello, 'Knife' Randuzi, and 'Baby-Face' Stampione! Remember me, boys? I'm that thick-headed flatfoot from Precinct Seven!"

Mauldin might have had the same experience in Italy as the war correspondent Ernie Pyle, who remarked that it seemed impossible, as the Allies were moving up the Italian peninsula, to go anywhere without some local popping up and either having lived ad worked in the United States, or having relatives there. Chicago seemed to show up quite frequently in such conversations.
