That could come through a Rift to Rifts Earth. Honestly, I think metroids would be the worst. Just imagine SAMAS PAs chasing after swarms of small floating jellyfish that can suck the life out of you and are completely immune to most common magic and tech weapons.
(Yes the critter can be from anything)

Plants spores that cause plants to defend themselves by release the pheromones that cause people to commit suicide like in the Happening. It's one thing to deal with an outside threat it's another to deal with yourself as the enemy.

For the uninitiated:
"Thang" is the short short Sci-Fi story of a super-being named, you guessed it.....Thang.
He pops over into our neck of the galactic woods, sees Earth...and then proceeds to peel off its oceans and pops the entire planet into his mouth.
No sooner does he get the whole package down his gullet when he, himself, is grabbed and swallowed by Something Else.
And the story ends thus: "....for there are greater Gods than Thang."
