I have been DMing in one gaming system or another for about 15 years and I have just recently started using backing music and even character theme songs to help punctuate game play. At times, the players will dread or feel immensely relieved when a specific characters theme music starts to play.
I am working on a Rifts campaign and I am basing it largely in space on undiscovered worlds, where the players were sent drifting in cryopods, picked up by an unknown alien race, and revived in an uncharted sector of the universe. I have a few different main storylines I am wrestling with, but my issue is with the music. I have a few game soundtracks (Mass Effect, Dawn of War I and II) that are in sci fi settings, but most of my players are ravenous multi platform gamers, so I want to bring in something that is not from a movie or game that has a sci fi feel. The intention is that my players will not say "Oh, this is the theme to the Normandy!" when the music starts. Any suggestions?
Cruxshadows has some good music that would fit well in a sci fi or fantasy soundtrack. And pretty much their whole discography is on amazon.com (and you can preview it before you buy, which is always nice)
Check these tracks out: Binary, Dragonfly, Foreverlast, Eye of the Storm, Deception, A Stranger Moment, Winter Born (hey, that'd be good for coming out of the cryopods ), Citadel, Return
I don't think they've ever actually been used in any soundtracks, even though they should be.
Also, you might wanna look at Billy Idol's Cyberpunk album, and KISS' Psycho Circus album. And some VNV Nation.
