Special unit designations

I've been thinking of starting this topic for a while, just as an exercise to see what we can come up with, and could be of use to GM's running a modern or near future based game.

I'm thinking along the lines of the special tactical units usually assigned to the police forces, but could also be used for gov/federal. agencies, ambulance, fire brigade, etc, as opposed to the Defense Forces.

In addition, I'd like to limit it to those acronyms that make a word, like S.W.A.T. Also, these can either be from real life, from media (inc. computer games) and real life.

S.W.A.T - Special Weapons and Tactics.

T.A.G - Target Action Group.

S.C.A.T - Special Casualty Access Team. (believe it or not, the name for the 'spec unit' un the Ambulance Service of New South Wales, Australia)

F.A.R.T - Fast Action Response Team. (I believe this was the designation for the special teams assembled and sent to Victoria when we had the bush fires a couple of weeks ago, I kid you not).

Your turn.

I imagine most of the SCAT officers introduce themselves as a Paramedic. Would be easier that way. lol

I was more looking at Acronyms that make names.

S.T.A.R.R. - The police special unit from Resident Evil. Anyone know what their designation means? I'll have to go look at my copy of the movie.

Don't forget to mine the Nightbane sourcebooks. Agencies like the National Security Bureau, Paranormal Activities Bureau, American Defense Agency, and the like have worked well for me. :)

  • GRU - Glavnoje Razvedyvatel'noje Upravlenije - Main Intelligence Directorate (of Russia's Armed Forces).
  • VDV - Vozdushno Desantnye Vojska - Air Landing Forces. Basically, airborne.
  • SVR - Sluzhba Vneshney Razvedki - Foreign Intelligence Service.
  • FSB - Federalnaya Sluzhba Bezopasnosti Rossiyskoy Federaciyi - Domestic Intelligence Service of the Russian Federation.
  • FSO - Federal'naya Sluzhba Ohrany - Protects the president and some other federal "resources".
  • SOBR - Spetsial'nye Otryady Bystrogo Reagirovaniya - Special Rapid Reaction Unit. I think that they have been renamed to OMSN (Otryad Militsii Spetsial'nogo Naznacheniya - Special Police Unit). A part of the Interior Ministry and focused on anticrime and countercrime operations.
