$500 to save my back?

Unread post by tobefrnk »

What are your impressions of the Kindle DX from Amazon? They just announced this baby, large screen and you a can import your own PDFs. It's kinda pricey but the idea of putting Palladium PDFs on it is enticing to save from carrying the large backpack. Sure, I could load them onto my laptop but the idea of having them all on an easy to hold pad is nice. If only it were a little cheeper, okay a lot cheeper. $200 and I'd be all over it.

They've addressed one of my chief issues with the Kindle, but the price is a deal-breaker for me. I'll wait until the next generation (or until I see some other company offer a comparable product for far less)

For the prices they want you're just as well off getting a laptop.

Yeah, a netbook can be had for much cheaper and it would do more and be just as portable. The Kindle would have much better battery life. Plus, I wouldn't think twice about passing the Kindle around the gaming table but with a netbook, I'd have reservations. Maybe I am just fantasizing a light, thin pad full of information. Like I said, $200 and I'd be signing up for the pre-order. $500, well I would just want it to do more.

I have the ASUS eeePC w/ the 9" screen. Since I read a lot of eBooks, and work a 2nd job as a security guard - I figured if I was gonna drop $300 - I could get an eBook reader that did ONLY that, or a mini-puter that could read my PDFs as well as connect to the net where I can read news, fanfics, and work on other things (in OpenOffice).

have very seldom regretted it.

That said - the price-point has been the deal-breaker for me w/ Kindle. That and it's not (iirc) backlit - so when commuting at night or in the winter, I can't read anything.

Only + (vs say, Sony's reader) is many books not otherwise in e-format are on Kindle, and are discounted a bit.

Just went to Amazon and checked the stats. That thing is a HORRIBLE deal for the money. You can get a 10.1 inch netbook for less money. It will display 24 bit (16 million) colors and hold a heck of a lot more than 4 gigabytes. The only advantage of a Kindle is the size and weight.

I got a netbook from Acer for 300 bucks and its awesome. Perfect little role-playing tool for the table. If you've got wifi in range then you can access the whole darn world.
