A merc sourcebook would be cool, but a spy sourcebook would be even better.

Splat books for N&S? Yes. I've been saying for years that they should be done.

Heck, I would love to play an SAS officer running arround Oman and Yemen. Officially I would be a Mercenary but I would be getting my orders from Whitehall*.
It's the sort of historical campain that really did take place in the 1960's and '70's.
*The British would have it's soldiers act as Mercenaries when it wanted to "help" an ally without getting officially involved. Basically you would have a highly trained commando leave british service to go work in a foriegn country and then once that job was over they would come back to British service without any sort of loss in pay or rank( sometimes they would even gain rank and pay while they were "Mercenaries").

Why do we have to set things in the past there are plenty of headlines one can use from today that would work fine. Humint (Human gather Intelligence) is more important than ever and not just for corporate espionage. Internationally espionage is vital to today. Even Sun Tzu devoted an entire Chapter on the subject...Something to think about

I think a mercenaries book could be very cool.
As for the comments attributed to Kevin, in thinking about it, how many historically-set non-pseudo-medieval games can you mention that have been a mainstream success? I can't think of any major historical games particularly, so I think that he is merely making his judgement based on business acumen rather than personal bias.

In all honesty I think the shortest route for getting Recon Modern Combat out would be as a Ninjas and Superspies sourcebook. So a Mercenaries book might be a part of making that happen.

I like the idea. It's add some extra things people can play in the game. Adding to the depth at the same time.
"Your Grace," she said, "I have only one question. Do you wish this man crippled or dead?"
"My Lady," the protector of Grayson told his Champion, "I do not wish him to leave this chamber alive."
"As you will it, your Grace."

There is actually some really good information which has been put together over the years. I would venture to say 50% of the work on a merc source book as already been done. The problem is that it is spread throughout much of Palladiums books and if you don't have an extensive library, you may not be aware of it all. Rifter 25 is the main one I reference as well as just creating much of my own information.
What I would like to see is a universal skills book which combines all the different skills from all the different books into one consolidated location and is the ultimate authority on skill values.

as for historical backgrounds not selling...Call of Cthulhu was a massive smash hit and was/is heavy on historical real world background.

If there is a meta plot introduced into the book, it might turn up the interest in the N&S/MC setting.

If you could have it your way, what would the Table of Contents look like? I was thinking:
Military Units
OCC's which reflect those units and their training
Weapons
Equipment
Vehicles
