Your Favorite Super RPG-WITH 20% More BOOM!!!
So I like Aberrant Trinity FASERIP and Heroes Unlimited personally.
•Abbi Trinity cuz it's Not a game about Super Heroes but rather a game about "What would YOU do if one day you awoke with the powers of a god?". It's got ALLOT of story telling to it as Gaining power is so much of a given that, the powers Actually become secondary after a while.
DOWNSIDES: May produce a case of sever Munchkin-itis
•FASERIP is just about the Best and most flexable game I've Ever come across! It's got everything and you can Make ANYTHING using it's rules. Most of all is that it's easy as all heck fire. It already has a FULLY established world (Multiple in fact thanx to "Ultimate Marvel) And you finally get to play as your favorite Marvel Super hero.
DOWNSIDES: Since it went outta Business 20years ago, it has seen Very little up-dates (Mostly Fan made stuff) and in No way is compatable with the Few Other Marvel RPG's
•Heroes Unlimited: The Only game that has an Active message board with Kewl people that frequent it. Plus it has such a 4 color good guy feel to it, even though you can and four more colors to it at least And you can play a Baddy.
DOWNSIDES: No super power customization... But Hey, you can just Invent what you want as made appearent by that long list of Izcer powers found on the Wiki Black Vault page.
•CYBER-GEN: The closest thing to a super hero game Cyberpunks R Talsorian games ever came up with. A load of fun and you get to be a kid again. Simple rules, fast play, allota rpging.
DOWNSIDES:The grown-ups Real are much tougher than you, and they'll remind you about that.... OFTEN
The others I'm Not to familiar with. Champions is VERY hard to make exactly what you want (despit what other say) and character creation is Difficult and Very Mathy, but I'd say that once you get used to that effect, character creation is about the same as PB.
Brave new world is okay... Needs to finish the story.
Never played Mutants & Masterminds
Never figured out Gurps.

Problem is I used Placebos "Running Up that Hill" to get Catherine Wheels "Black Metallic" to get Monorals "KIRI" to get Dan Balans "Crazy Loop" out of my head in the first place.

I'll say Marvel. It's really the first RPG I played. Fond memories.

Re: Your Favorite Super RPG
i gotta go with heroes unlimited. despite its flaws, i really enjoy it as a game.
when i think of something in a movie or comic, i instinctively convert it to hu2. that doesn't happen with any other game.
aberrant is great fun and wonderfully thought out, but is often far too cynical for me.
Mutants and Masterminds is a great system that is both simple and versatile, but the second edition is way too overbalanced for my tastes. the few good changes that come with it can be effortlessly added to the much superior first edition.

I was kinda figuring that it'd end up being FASERIP FTW!Incriptus wrote:Marvel . . .How can you not love a game that you pronounce the stats "Face Rip"
When the Head of N-Prime (The Aberrant Trinity RPG play by post forum-with as much as 100 peeps online at a time) just says he thinks FASERIP is the bomb and 10% of the boards posters drop what there playing (Some 20 games going) to say "He11 Yah!", and a bunch of them wanna drop their games to play it... That about says it to me that Faserip will get one of (if not the highest) ranks.
And Yes, Aberrant is a super synical Meta-plot (I'd think the term meta-plot actually Came from Aberrant Trinity if didn't know better) nightmare at times, but I can't help but luv it. Just wished I could have played it.

The original Marvel Superheroes was my first superhero RPG, and yes, it tended to get a little munchkin-ish, but it was fun. After MSH folded, I found HU.

Re: Your Favorite Super RPG
See, that's the problem... My player bases (60+/- players) were all GMs/STs/and DMs for the rest of Washington. They had to run those kinda games like M&MM, White Wolf LARPS for the Cam, Traveler...etc. But at the end of their day, all They ever wanted Me to do was to run them through Rifts, Chaose Earth, Nightspawn (Never called bane), Robotech, Macross II, MACROSS PLUS (By Dave Dietrich), TMNT, Phase World, PFRPG, Ninjas & SS, Wormwood and of course :HEROES UNLIMITED...UNLIMITED...UNLIMITED...UNLIMITED...UNLIMITED...
They didn't care as long as I ran them through a PB game.
They also Liked me to run them through AD&D, Jovian Chronicals (I refused to run them through Tribe 8), Cyber Punk, Cyber gen, Shadow Runn, FASERIP, and every once in a while something from WW. So I never really got to Run much else (Like Mutants & Master Minds)! I really have little GMing experiance in most other game systems so I tend to know little about them.
FYI-in 15+years of GMing/Sting/DMing I seldom got to play... In fact I was Band from playing Aberrant
As such I refused to RUN anymore games unless I got to play... It's been 5 years w/o a game and I haven't heard back from anyone.
My EX-Players have moved on to; Dead Regin, Exalted, and SLA Industries from what I've heard.

Re: Your Favorite Super RPG
I love abberant for the encompasing worldview, and the unified scheme of powers. BUT players are pretty much playing second fiddle to the backstory, while virtual god like beings actually carry the story.
Champions for the win. powers get customised, whole characters get customised. a lot of detailing can go in to make greater and more elaborate characters. The problem lies with what I call 'shopping list syndrome'. where the more options a person has, the longer he takes to make a decision.
Mutants and masterminds is also way cool, BUT the designers were lazy, making horrible pastiche's of comic book history and passing it off as story. It's thinly veiled and I expected the writers to have an original thought, as the system is bland and very ..umm...'samey' and could use a good background, or some creativity to zest it up.
I hate gurps with a passion (You will note I refuse to capitalise it), so...enough said.
I like the non FASERIP versions of Marvel superheroes as well. they are not ideal but they are solid for the job they are meant to do, and at the very least the new systems are...unique.
Heroes Unlimited remains my favourite, despite it's flaws, probably because it allows me to keep flexible and play on the fly (I can't lose tuime searching for rules that don't exist after all). I'm sad to see where it's going (Is it possible to E-Weep?) but I continue to love it all the same.
Biff Bam pow, Capes Indy, DC heroes (both new and old editions), truth and justice, superworld, villains and vigillantes, silver age sentinels, blood and vigilance, deeds not words, and wild talents are all also fun games, but would take a loooong time to review all.
In short. despite it all, HU remains the fave.

Re: Your Favorite Super RPG
HU is my favorite, for only one reason...it is the most fun. The rules are....wonky, to say the least, but PB has the most consistently fun games I have ever run/played.
Trinity/Abberant is nice, but the meta-plot was not my style at all, though the conspiracy aspect was nice.
CyberGen is, sadly, trash. The new Champions setting using the Fuzion rules set is a MUCH better interpretation of both Interlock and Champions, though it does lose some granularity/lethality from Interlock.
Marvel Super Heroes is really nice as a reference for adding Marvel supers into my HU games, rather like GURPS sourcebooks are only used for gaming material, not to run campaigns in my group. We have about 30 GURPS books and have never run a single GURPS game....
Biff Bam Kapow, not too bad...
The BRP interpretation of City of Heroes/Villains is nice to make well balanced characters (which is also the biggest draw of New Champions).
For my money, though I will keep on buying HU stuff...

Re: Your Favorite Super RPG
I still like to play the old Marvel game, it was a blast to enter the comics and stand beside such beloved characters. It was a sad day when the company went under and I can't believe Marvel ever considered reviving it. The system was so much fun, quick and so easy to remember with the ranking names. To this day if I see a superhero cartoon I quickly give the power rankings to the feats done in the show. Reading the game's characters bios & histories I quickly became an amateur quiz master of Marvel characters.
I will be 125 living in Rio de Janeiro when the Great Cataclysm comes, I will not survive long but I will be cloned threw the Achilles project and my clones will be Achilles Neo-Humans that will start a new Jedi order in Psyscape. I do think that the FASERIP is the easiest way to quantify characteristics. The statistic categories are clear and the values granular enough for easy use in game and broad enough that where a character falls along the spectrum is pretty clear. That is the method that we used to stat up hundreds of villains and TV characters over the years.
When it came time to put them in game, each of the levels became a die roll....to give the stats in the range we had chosen to place them in.
Great system for characters and conversions, but I really did not like the actual game system, sadly.

Re: Your Favorite Super RPG
I appreciate that, Steeler49er. We have not always gotten along so well (especially since at one time you said driving or busing from Lynwood to Tacoma to game with me was not worth the time or gas), and our personalities tend to clash sometimes (like when you sometimes take liberties with editing and posting humorous versions of the powers I write without warning or asking me for permission first).
Still, I love Heroes Unlimited so much that donating my time (to ensuring people have the wiki as a resource for gaming) is well worth the time.

•I can't do the busing thing cuz I'm simply that poor right now (For instance, this is not my computer I'm typing on, nor my internet line.) I have zero money fer the last 9 monthes and everything goes to feed my baby daughter. I ment no disrespect by it. secondly to that, I must Also keep watch over my daughter and hauling her around is something my wife doen't appreciate me doing since she is the one working now. In fact she has Dissallowed me from RPG fer the last 9 months over issues with gas. So again, no insult was ment. Lastly my car was malfuntioning (NO BREAKS ) and it was the only thing I would likely use to get out there...
And besides, I never knew you wanted to meet up
•As to your Superpower I altered, that was a mistake that I shouldn't have made. I never ment any insult, I liked the power (Com-cast) and thought you'd like/get the joke. I see that you've realized it was a joke and not a snub. I made a Very big misjudge on the results and broke the Message Board rules at the same time. Again, I realized that it insulted you and I'm deeply sorry.
I AM however Not laughing nor happy Nor joking when I say that I was not pleased that you went off on me Twice over those issues you've just Again brought up, nor the fact that you strawmanned my actual intention with such overt venom again and again! The fact that you admitted you've got a problem with taking things the wrong way, only to turn around in those same statments and do it again was very frustrating to me and I no longer even go to the new powers thread because what you said about me was so Very upsetting and over the top. I understand and respect your right to anger, but two posts in responce to my saying nothing at all (save for "POST DELETED" or some such comment) was way too much.
So yes I do infact respect your Mega-tons of hard work on the Black vault and I Do feel sorry for unnitentionally insulting you, which is rare because I never feel guilt for anything I do as it is bizzare emotion to me so this is truely a mistake I'm sorry. This paticular type of insult is one that is against Everything I stand for (I have only 5 Codes of conduct, and dissing others works of art is a big no!). And I'm sorry you chose (It was a choice) to take my 'inability' to make a trip to see you as an insult when it is due to insane dirt poorness due to my daughters medical bills which are over 35K$, and Im too poor even for a 6$ round trip out to where ever you live in Tacoma... But No, you've gone too far with your misunderstandings & comments against me no matter how justified you may believe yourself to be in it.
If it's just the same I'd perfer you Please stay on the topic Only and not bring up these subjects anymore as it is now getting to be a swore spot and, I'm Actually starting to lose my cool towards you over itAnd I hate it when people push me enough to lose my cool
Please stay on the topic Only

As I recall, Godlike was set during WWII and was a lot more gritty and deadly by design than most superhero games. This was one of the themes, that you might be able to do amazing superhero stuff, but a single sniper bullet could kill you dead.
I am not sure if Wild Talents changes that at all.

Yeah, it's really neat since your a 'Paper Tank' (To coin an acquaintances WoW term for mages). All that power and no one takes you serious when you tell them that your "Not that powerful", then they throw you out on to the battle feild anyhow.

The original Marvel FASERIP, and Heroes unlimited are the only hero rpg's i've played, and i like them both
i have the Marvel FASERIP advanced rules set (books), and just recently a group has started playing again at the local game store, so they asked me to join, and so i designed a character.....there was a serious case of Munchkin-itis, so i had to tone it down a bit, though i'm still using it in the game

Re: Your Favorite Super RPG-WITH 20% More BOOM!!!
I voted for Heroes Unlimited and DC Heroes (old).
DC Heroes, especially the second edition had some of the best sourcebooks ever. I like the geometrically increasing scale of the APs system. I like the APs system for giving us a pretty good way of figuring how heavy of an object Superman could lift or how much Braniac 5 can memorize. The long, yet easy to understand Powers and Skills list was nice.
As for Heroes Unlimited, somehow every time I read a description for some game mechanics bit, a power, a power category, an alien appearance, an experimental side effect, or whatever, it gives me an idea for a new original character.

Heroes Unlimited...easiest to make believeable characters.
FASERIP was the first game that I ever GMed. I used FASERIP to create a game called Wasteworld. That game went to file 13 when I found Rifts.

↑Ohh that is sooo cute.
I think Kevins team "The Defilers" may have had a magic mouse. I'd love to know the story on it
So last night I found my copy of FASERIPs ultimate powers books!!! Holy Frack is that thing just chalked fulla creative power goodies, and to boot it also listed the basic rules as well... I'd forgotten just how freaky fun and simple the system is, I wish I could still enjoy RPing cuz that game would be fun to run through again...
