ok so one of my players was fighting a troll and since the thing had him by a good 6 feet and he had his battleaxe in hand he said hey i want to chop this things leg off. what would the rules be for this. i assume a called shot for targeting the leg but what about chopping the leg off? luckely he rolled a natural 20 on it so it made it easier to say that he chopped it off but what if he just rolled a 14 or something. good enough to hit the leg but...thanks

I've always handled it this way: if the player inflicts half of whatever mdc the part had in one hit it's a successful chop-off. Now, how you handle that if it doesn't have MDC per location is another story...

I use a formula to figure out how much damage a certain part of the body can take in those instances. Like 25% of main body is what a leg can take, it still requires a called shot with a modifier against them as they are trying to lop a body part off, thinnest section or least bony area kind of thing.
As for giant creatures versus normal size like a frost giant vs a human, I am sorry unless they are riding on a horse, roll a nat 20 and are carrying a claymore I dont think they are going to chop any legs off. That is like saying I can go out here take my bastard sword and chop a telephone pole down in one whack.

Some beings have MDC/SDC by location, most don't. Entirey GM's call how much damage has to be done for it.

For creatures without a MDC By Location chart I use the HP/SDC breakdown found in the Compendium of Modern Weapons book.

Same here, but I don't divide the overall MDC (as suggested in text), I use compendium as a guide to determine MDC by location adjusting percentages as appropriate. I like to keep my monsters tough.

By the nature of the question I am going to figure that it is about a PF game, not any MDC setting.
Which would mean at least two of the above posters missed with their answers.
As to may answer: I closely agree with ingex. Close enough that I'll second his explanation.
