What you're saying is pretty much how an endless game plays, except you're making it shorter. Like, with all campaigns that I play/GM in, the end of the game, whether it went for 3 hours or 12 hours, has always ended on a cliffhanger, or a twist leading into the next game, or 'episode'.
What you're thinking is to have them roll up a charactor, or to convince them to play more so, role up a charactor for them, then just chuck them in a situation, explain it, explain what they have to do and that's it. If you've played it, think of Left 4 Dead 1. Nothing will lead into anything. Just hack 'n slash fun kinda. That's what you should be doing to convince them. Then if they want to play, come up with a storyline and **** then.
-Edit: Didn't read your last paragrapgh, but we're on the same page.
