I just wanted to wish all the Dads out there, a Happy Father’s Day.
I remember back when role-playing games were the hot new thing played mostly by high-schoolers and college kids. I know. I was one of those college kids. Now, 20 or 30 years later, most of us guys are fathers. Hard to believe so much time has passed. Heck, my kids are all grown up. Have been for a long time. My son Adam has two children – okay, his girlfriend has two, but he’s the “dad” of the house. My beautiful daughter, Monica, who just got married last August, is talking about having a baby. On top of that, I have a whole legion of people in my gaming family.
Make sure you give your own Dad a call and spend some time with him. That time doesn’t have to be today, either. It can be anytime and for no special reason at all. Enjoy your fathers, and for that matter, your mothers, friends and loved ones. Enjoy them and don’t be shy about telling them how much they mean to you.
I lost my Mom to cancer when I was 33 (she was 53). Lost Erick Wujcik too early as well. I’m happy to say I have enjoyed my Dad for a good long time now, and we’re closer than ever. The doctor called Thursday and wants to see him Monday to talk about the results of his bladder biopsy – that doesn’t sound too promising – but hoping the news isn’t too bad.
I guess all I’m trying to say is enjoy the ones you love. Don’t let work, games (even Palladium’s games), and other aspects of life push the people you love into shadowy corners. Remember, love and cherish them.
I’m lucky. I have few regrets in my life. I’ve lived my dream. I’ve had the honor of knowing one truly amazing person after another, and despite the ups and downs that are inevitable in life, I’ve enjoyed one hell of a ride, and look forward to the many new adventures that lie ahead for me.
I don’t know why, but I’ve been thinking about Erick Wujcik and Keith Parkinson a great deal today. Both, of course, are gone. Taken from us much too early. I’ve also been thinking about Kevin Long and the fun we used to have, and my dear friend Alex, and the many wonderful friends I have today.
Keep those imagination burning bright. And all you Dads (and children) enjoy the day.
