Martial Arts by the Numbers

One of the problems with reviewing fan made martial arts is that you have to wade through all the martial arts in the main book and somehow find the relevent information. Well, with this thread, I'm going to try and do just that. Maybe with a little commentary along the way. I'll start with the Agent forms since they're the simplest ones.
Basic HtH
Ent. Req.: None
Skill Cost: 1 year.
ApM: 2@1 (5 total)
MAP: 0
Roll w/Punch/Fall +4
Parry +4
Dodge +4
Strike +2
Damage +4
Pull Punch +4
(Total Bonus: 22)
Critical Strike: Behind @ 8th, 19+ @ 12th.
Knockout/Stun: Behind @ 8th, 19+ @ 9th.
Kick Attack 2d4 Damage @ 6th (damage increase)
Combat Moves: 10
Skills: 0
Not bad for the simplest of the available martial arts, and keep in mind that this style is selectable as a Secondary Skill. The additional kick damage is kind of confusing though. I'm thinking it's an artifact from when the style was originally created. Because, as an equivalent to Judo, that really should be a boost to Bodyflip/Throw.

Expert Hth
Ent. Req.: None.
Skill Cost: 2 Years.
ApM: 2@1 (5 total).
MAP: 0.
Roll w/Punch/Fall +2
Parry +3
Dodge +3
Strike +3
Damage +5
Pull Punch +2
(Total Bonus: 18)
Critical Strike: Behind @ 9th, 19+ @ 12th.
Knockout/Stun: Behind @ 9th, 19+ @ 8th.
Deathblow: 20 @ 15th.
Kick Attack 2d4 Damage @ 5th (damage increase).
Combat Moves: 11.
Skills: 0.
For a step up the ladder and an additional year of training, this is kind of a step backwards. You lose 4 points of bonus, and can Crit./K.O. from behind a level later. You do gain a Combat move -- which should be two -- access to Deathblow, damage increase on Kick Attack a level earlier, and K.O. a level earlier though.

Assassin Hth
Ent. Req.: None.
Skill Cost: 2 years.
ApM: 2@1 (6 total).
MAP: 0.
Roll w Punch/Fall +3
Parry +3
Dodge +3
Strike +6
Damage +6
Pull Punch +3
(Total Bonus: 24)
Critical Strike: 19+ @ 10th.
Knockout/Stun: 18+ @ 7th.
Deathblow: 20 @ 12th.
Kick Attack 2d4 Damage @ 9th (damage increase)
Combat Moves: 14.
Skills: 0.
For an Agent style, this is pretty vicious. If I was going to re-write this I'd change a few things; ditch the Pull Punch bonus (this is a style devoted to killing after all) and add them into some of the other categories, swap the Crit. and K.O. target numbers and level access, and change the Kick Attack damage increase to a level bonus for W.P. Knife. Oh, I almost forgot, no Crit. or K.O. from behind for a style for assassins? That has to change.

Martial Arts HtH
Ent. Req.: None.
Skill Cost: 3 years.
ApM: 2@1 (6 total).
MAP: 0.
Roll w/Punch/Fall +4
Parry +4
Dodge +4
Strike +2
Damage +6
Pull Punch +4
(Total Bonus: 24)
Critical Strike: 19+ @10th.
Knockout/Stun: 20 @ 7th.
Deathblow: 20 @ 14th.
Kick Attack 1d8+2 Damage @ 4th (damage increase).
Gain Bodyflip/Throw @ 8th. (At least that's how I'm interpreting this LAB for the moment.)
Combat Moves: 16
Skills: 0
Like Expert HtH this style is somewhat of a step back, although not as badly as with Expert HtH. No Crit. or K.O. from behind, the Strike bonus is lowered, the K.O. target is raised to 20, and you don't get Bodyflip/Trow until 8th level. All this for an extra year of training. Although the Kick Attack damage boost at 4th level is kinda nice, and you have more combat moves than any other Agent style.

Things change a little with this one as we start with the "name" martial arts and we add Stat bonuses, martial arts powers, and skills. Aikido isn't the best defensive art -- I think Lee Kwan Choo takes that award -- but it does set the tone for other defensive, internal styles. I don't understand why it's an Exclusive style as the bonuses aren't really that impressive -- as you'll see later -- but then again that trend continues with the other Exclusive styles. In totaling up the stat bonuses I separated them into Chi/Physical & Mental stats/S.D.C. because that seemed to make the most sense. All three are measured on different scales and adding them all together would be confusing.

Physically, this style is weaker than Basic HtH -- on the mystical side though, this is the only style that has access to Mudra. If you want them for your character, or you want to create a new style with them, this is the style you have to pick.

This is an odd one. For one of the big three internal styles (Pa Kua Chang, Hsing I, Tai Chi Ch'uan) it doesn't look like much on paper. I guess that the Rotary Palm Strike, Sweep Kick, and Pun Gung Bi weapon kata can make up for a lot. The K.O. progression is nice, and a Hand Attack to the Rear is +5, but it's lacking a Roll w/Punch/Fall/Impact bonus -- trust me, that is a very useful bonus. Oh, one more thing, the weapon described under the Pun Gung Bi Weapon Kata -- which really should be Pan Guan Bi -- is actually an Emei Piercer (Emei Ci).

Yes, that's the correct name. I've corrected a lot of the translation mistakes in my notes and that's how I'll be posting them. Anyway, this is an excellent style, it has a range of abilities, solid bonuses, and a killer Deathblow target number. And depending on how you interpret one line in the description of Crane Stance Kata, Critical Strike target numbers may become easy to reach.

Like most of the original styles from Mystic China, Bak Mei is strange. Created after the gutting N&S received in the Revised Edition it lacks Parry and Dodge bonuses forcing the style to rely on the Chum Advanced Defense. It does have access to Advanced Atemi and Advanced Chi Mastery but beyond that I can't recommend it. Oh, and it should only have Cantonese as a language skill -- it is a southern style after all.

Similar to MGG, but different enough to be worth selecting. Essentially it teaches the eighteen classic weapons of Chinese martial arts. Due to W.P.s, it actually has the most skills. It has a great S.D.C. bonus as well -- tied with Li Chia. Also has highest Initiative bonus. I counted Weapon Tap as an actual Combat Move rather than a Modifier as it really should be a special attack. Also, the only style besides Tong Long -- and maybe Hsen Hsia -- to only have access to one type of MAP

A very odd style in that it doesn't allow P.S., P.P., or Spd. bonuses to be used with combat moves. Otherwise, it has seven combat moves unique to the style.
