Familiars! Has anyone played having one?

Unread post by GaredBattlespike »

Greetings!

I have a Ley Line Walker that has the option of getting the Familiar Link Spell, from a Scroll (Cast or Convert). Has anyone played a Mage with a Familiar in the Megaverse? My GM allows the Through the Glass Darkly rules to Permanently spend PPE to "Pimp" your Familiar-Human Intelligance, See the Invisible, Sense Evil, Sense across Planes, The Rifter (21 or 22) has added Rifts rules for this like 10 PPE to make you Familiar MDC.

In short, I was looking for advice fron someone who has had a Familiar in the Palladium Megaverse.
Any reasonable advice, from anyone, will be welcomed-of course!

Thank you, and Good Gaming, GaredBattlespike

ah... yes....sorta.
The familiars have been ..... mostly used as PCs in games away from their mage's. They were made using the Familiar augmentation rules found in "Through the Glass Darkly" book. So they were not the 'standard' familiar as per the familiar link spell.
May you be blessed with the ability to change course when you are off the mark.

I have played a Mini-Bane in Rifts, but not to the extent I'd like to. He had an IQ-24, among other
things. He also had M.D.C., & could fly-pretty cool if you like that stuff. I paid 90 P.P.E. for the
works-my shifter was pretty high level at the time, so it really didn't hurt. Having a Familiar can
be rough, though. NEVER Send your familiar to another plane-you will most likely lose it. Keep it
close to you is the best advice I can give you. & if not send him outside Bow/gun/throwing
Range if in Real danger.

I currently have an avian biomech with cybernetic studio eye, so it can be given 3 more options. It is very good for scouting since it can record what it sees my whole team can use the intel. and radar 2000 feet is always nice.

Never have or in my gaming group.

But you can look at several Fantasy movies, where mages have familiars as an example what they can do and what the familiar is capable of.

I was thinking of a couple of spells, but am not sure if they wouldn't be more like Class Options.

1)Conjure Familiar spirit:
There is alien race that whose "shamans" can get a spirit as a familiar like entity, and I thought some mages mike prefer that sort of familiar.

2)Bind Familiar Spirit:
One of the Rifter Morphus lists for Nighbane included a familiar option. The Familiar is an apparantlly "real" animal that is made from the characters hit points(which the Bane permanently loses) but reappears 24 hours after it dies. And it has a mental link with the Bane.
In the same book there is a mini-Dragon that is similar but instead of a mental link the Bane knows all that it knows.
Damn ICE/BCP/BorderPatrol! Damn everyone who won’t damn ICE/BCP/Border Patrol!! Damn everyone that won’t put lights in his windows and sit up all night damning CE/BCP/BorderPatrol!!!
If you support ICE/BCP/BorderPatrol at this point, you would have called the Gestapo on the people surreptitiously moving into your neighbor's attic and huffed that you were only following the law.

Just remember, while TTGD-style familiars are limited to 1 familiar per person, that familiar is not limited to having one master :)

I mean sure, if you can make them 'loyal' (as can be done with animals) they would not betray you to serve another master...

Although being willing may not even be necessary... I mean, do you necessarily even get the consent of a familiar before binding it?

I should think any Nightlands Familiars with short lifespans would want to bond with many masters so that they can keep living as long as possible, rather than being limited to the mortality of a single master.

I have two characters ho have companions, a Shifter with a familiar and a Wolf Blood/Vulbund pair. I am not sure what you want to know. In most cases the companion are treated as extensions of the characters and some times as plot devices. In combat they are treated special actions.
