And just make everything you can think of. We'll eat it.

Definitely min-cheesecakes. Though it's true - whatever you make, everyone will be happy with it. :D

I could make do with some puppycrack, some marble cheesecake, and/or some chocolate-chunk brownies... the gooier the better. :D

Of course, this is all assuming I'm able to show up... :-?

Tarnation, and I had not heard of it. ...

If it amounts to anything I will gladly say that I am particular to dark chocolate brownies with a gooey inside, tasting like a feather and hitting my calories intake like a sledgehammer. Topping that off with an espresso is ... well, heaven. (Memo to myself: Must ask Jorel whether he can do something about the good coffee part and then quickly become a freelancer so I can get that brownie to match. )

We'll have Espresso guaranteed. Last time we brought plenty for all, no doubt we'll do the same again. I'm more concerned with beer than caffeine, though that will be later in the evenings.

Backed-in cereal? What a droll idea. I imagine this treat contains enough sugar to be for the blood glucose level what nitromethane can be for cars.

What about Fondant au Chocolat (although I guess a brownie can be similar, no)?

Personally, I am extremely partial to pumpkin pie (even if the OH hardly takes place in the right season).

Well, then, to further my cultural education and immersion experience I need to convince Mrs. Shinitenshi to be so kind as to let me try one.

Should I survive that, which I sincerely hope, I will then with a clear conscience proceed to fulfil my life long dream to eat a stack of pancakes with maple syrup in an old fashioned diner together with a filter coffee that then either must be so thin that you just KNOW that it was made with something like fresh water (eerie, I know) or so thick that a horse-shoe does not sink when put on top of the beverage - Hendrik at the airport ("no, Sir, this is not a weapon, it's a horse-shoe ... for what I need that? well, duh, obviously: to test coffee quality - perfectly normal") - anything in between really would just not do. I could then follow up with 3 random cans of any taste of bouncy bubble beverage (with caffeine) and a like - or to be on the safe side: double - number of American beer, to sort of desinfect, complemented by an uncanny amount of spear ribs (or better yet corn dogs) and a root beer float, but that may be pushing my luck at that point ...

Yet, I assume I will see THINGS then any way and move with a speed that would put the Flash to such shame that he will retire.

Cheers

All Your Puppychow Belongs To Me!

I guess we could set up some 'bum fights' to try to win it from me. The question on that is: who's going to fight for 10th in line, for the other nine to wear me down? :D

That's fine, you go fight everyone else for it. Meanwhile, I'll be walking away with a year's supply. Just ask Sinsapaugh what happened to his Snickerdoodles the first time around...

Well I would have asked for Buckeyes again, but I'm afraid she would have thrown them at me instead of handing me a tin-full since she went out of her way last time to tell me they were the most difficult confection she'd ever made... :?

Since you've listed off all of my favorite things, you're eating with the Freelancers. Since we like beer and ribs and pancakes...usually at the same time.

I surely will enjoy that very much as food is best in good company.

With or without mayo ... this is exceptionally & extremely worrisome.

:-D ... and why restaurant goers are not referred to as guests but danger seekers. :clown:

All joking aside, though, I KNOW there is great food in the US and I love deserts and sweet stuff!

In defense of American cuisine (now you should really start to be worried if it is I who gives that apologia ;) ):

[rant]

Where it not for the use of offal, soul food would be an unmitigated joy. Creole and Cajun are just plain lovely. And then there are pancakes, great pies in general and anything made with cranberries in particular ... and there is what I would call courage cuisine, for example a marshmellow cranberry crush, love that as a side dish for Thanksgiving!

I think - if there is a problem at all, with cooking that is - problems come from the how, not the where meals are made. America has so many cultural influences, thus cooking styles, that it is a natural for variety as well as fusion cooking.

Anyway, one has a bad cuisine if (i) there are no fresh ingredients, (ii) one does not take his time cooking and (iii) one is not cooking to create an enjoyable meal, (iv) eaten at a table, (v) without a TV running and (vi) cook and guests take their time about eating. I guess, any cuisine goes down the proverbial drain if people stop celebrating a meal.

Alas this is pretty international, I fear. Even when you go to France today, and the French have no doubt a marvelous cusine, you will still find a great many good restaurants, of course, but there are so many fast food chains now, it is an insult to palate and culture. Not that I do not like a good hamburger, on the contrary, but I prefer the home or individually made not those prefab versions. I was recently in Nice and found a restaurant

Mind, while I like it, I do not refer to high level cusine, but to simple, daily dishes - clam chowder springs to mind, stews and pies (sweet as well as pastry) - a cuisine that comes from factories and not from your own oven/stove ... microwaves and convenience foods are a bigger danger to culture than WMDs.

And I shall not exclude myself from joyfully committing the odd culinary sin, but, forsooth, not only is it unhealthy but without nice meals the - sometime only - daily opportunity for some nice chatter, beyond an discussion of shopping lists, bills and such, with your spouse is further reduced. Abyssmal.

Is anything of the above negatives really typical for the cusine of the US of A? Even if so, is it inevitable? The answer to the latter is surely a firm yes, so all is or at least can be good.

[/end rant]

I am so looking forward to be back in the States and to many a weird meal with friends!

Bon appétit

What I will then surely need will be a good sized beer! Sausages without beer are like champagne without bubbles.

But, I am not afraid. (Yet.) ... As Otto von Bismarck said, "The less people know how sausages and laws are made, the better they will be able to sleep."

Hendrik, are you familiar with Yelp, Zagat and Citysearch? There are multiple websites with diner ratings and critic breakdowns of local restaurants. I suggest using them to target your best bets for your Euro. There is great food in the US and very often it costs no more than a McGarbage Meal or a Greasy McLameness.

Even though our famous culinary capitals are New Orleans, New York and San Francisco, there are some notable places in Michigan. There is an excellent show on the Food Network called Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives that features great tasting "comfort" food. Here's a website you can use to hunt down some of the featured places:

I was pondering where to go for quite a bit and really wanted to go through Michigan for a road trip before the OH, but due to a bout of holiday angst re uncertain weather in April I changed plans and decided for Virginia, which I hope is less likely to catch a storm or snowy stuff end of April. The distance sadly ruled out San Francisco, which I would have loved to see as that is where my 1930s BtS campaign takes place at the moment. But as I am extremely interested in the Civil War and history in general, Virginia - which also is a comparatively "small" State, thus better to travel in the short span of time on top of the OH I can take off from work and family - sort of recommended itself rather strongly. So, I will be in Virgina for a couple of days before coming to the OH and any recommendation in either the Detroit-Ann Arbor area or central Virginia (although I plan days trips taking me all through the State from Antietam / Harper's Ferry in West Virginia, down the Blue Rridge Mountains' Parkway, in Charlottesville, Fredericksburg or Williamsburg, at least that is what I plan plus if possible somewhere where I can enjoy listening to some banjo and country music, so anything there would be great) would be welcome.

Will check out the link. Thank you very much!

Kindest regards
Hendrik
