Energy Field as magic net?

So, would you allow a the use of Energy Field as a magic net? It has no saving throw, can target anyone within 60', has a maximum radius of 8', and 60 SDC/MDC.

You cast it at an opponent restricting the size to the size of the opponent and viola! Unavoidable magic net!

I cast this on a god's avatar tonight while he was prone. I forced a D-Port back to daddy!

What do you think? Was this abuse? I thought it was rather clever, and it saved the day!

I think you can walk out of the field if you want, since you can attack from within it, at least thats how I have always taken it.

Very inventive. The sort of thing that a mage would think of.

The spell description does not say that a person can walk through it, nor that you can attack through it.

I believe it's more of a wall: nothing in nothing out. I believe it's even been stated that it's air tight as well.

Thank you, sir! I'm trying to play the character as a very smart, resourceful type. This is probably the first character that I have used EVERY spell he has, at least once, most of them in inventive ways in combat. It's been a blast!

I stand corrected (was thinking of circles), but why would it force a d-port? Why couldn't he just wait it out or attack the field?
Also they can still cast magic against people outside of the circle.

Normally, yes he could cast spells or attack the field, but I made it nigh form fitting so he couldn't move, an energy field straight jacket/bubble! He could have waited it out, but played correctly, the avatar had no way of knowing our capabilities, so he took the smart route and ran.

I guess it all depends on how you let the spell work, I always figured it was always a bubble, so it never could be form fitting (the dimensions of a perfect sphere making that impossible), either way I would not let it stop spell casting even if it was form fitting.
All spells are cast verbally, so if he/she can speak they can cast.

I do agree it was a good move, I have had players erect one in a hall way to stop people from coming down the hallway.

Excellent utility and combat spell.

It appears as a wall or bubble. I don't think I'd allow you to make it form fitting nor would I allow you to move it or change its shape once cast, but if your GM allows it, even better for you!

I've used it in wall form to pin folks to the ground or against a ceiling (he thought he was being clever). My favorite use is to create a force field at an angle to the ground right in front of a flying power armor. The armor hits it and gets slammed into the ground. Not lethal (unless your GM uses falling damage rules), but causes the PA to completely lose its speed and gives us a couple of attacks on him before he can pull himself out of the ground (can't jump without hitting the force field again...).

You can use it to block entrances/exits, prevent people from getting to their equipment. Put a bubble around someone and then teleport a fusion block inside it (explosions within small enclosures should do additional damage, but there's nothing official that I'm aware of). Use it to make a platform for you to stand on. Cover the surface of water to keep someone for coming up for air. All sorts of uses.

Awesome spell.

It wasn't actually "form fitting", but small enough that he couldn't move.

Also, page 189 of RUE, under casting spells, section 2 says hand gestures are usually part of the spell casting process.

Next time I'll cast two, one to contain the body, the other in the mage's mouth....

barna10, I just thought I should let you know I'm not trying to be difficult, or argue with you for the fun of it. I'm just trying to give my opinion on the original question.

wow, I never noticed that lol, always thought it was the same for all systems. In Palladium Fantasy its all done verbally. Thanks for teaching me something new! :)

, that is pretty funny. If your GM lets you do it by all means do it.

Sounds kosher to me.
