roll20.net

Unread post by Giant2005 »

Has anyone tried playing a game from this site?
I had a little tinker and it looks very impressive.
It includes a very well designed virtual tabletop, die rollers, text, voice and video based chat; And lots of other nice little touches like the ability to have it play variable, ambient music of the GM's choice, turn trackers and it records the entire campaign between sessions. It could even be used for a pseudo play-by-post that has a convenient virtual tabletop to aid in keeping track of things.

All of the above sounds like some kind of advertisement but I really want to know how well the video and and voice based chat options hold up, so if anyone has any experience with those aspects of the site, I'd really love to hear your opinions on how well they work.

BTW I have nothing at all to do with that site, I'm just hoping to convince a GM to move our game there because I hate Skype.

It sounds like a neat little site. You should post a link to it and mention the requirements for using it. Looks like you need Google Chrome to run it?
Games: Savage Rifts, Fantasy Age, Dragon Age, Dungeons and Dragons Fifth Edition, Heroes Unlimited, TMNT, Ninjas and Superspies, and Rifts

The link is as simple as it sounds: http://roll20.net/
But yeah I don't really know any requirements for it - it is completely web based. I use chrome and it works for me but beyond that I don't really know for sure...

Why do you hate Skype?

I have issues with Skype when too many people are connected to the call. People start getting muffled or it turns their voices into an indecipherable, electronic mess.
It is because it is a self-hosted conversation and not server-hosted.

It is probably my ISP causing the issue - it only costs $30 a month for unlimited so really I don't have much of a right to complain. Still, I don't have that issue with server-hosted conversations on Ventrilo or Teamspeak, so I'm going to go ahead and blame Skype anyway :D.

Roll20.net looks interesting for Web based games. i just started looking at this week. A free account offers a lot. It uses any Web browser which is great for me, because I end up accessing online games from any operating system (Win, Mac, Linux). I am not sure if it works from tablet and smart phone browsers. Roll20.net does voice and video through one of two options, their own site or Google+. With the Google+ option it gets integrated into Google+, so you have seemless access to Google+ plus tools like their chat and documents. There are several people running Rifts and other Palladium games on Roll20.net.

A site similar to Roll20.net is RPGTonight.com. It is free. It is browser based. Its interface looks a little older. It does integrate voice and video, so users need third party software for that, such as Skype or Google+.

I see several people on the Palladium forums use OpenRPG which is also free, but Java based, not browser based. I am having trouble running it from my Linux PC, even though it should run according to their Web site. I think the Java software means that iPad/IPhone users cannot use it. It looks like people that want to use voice need another program like Skype or Google+ running outside OpenRPG. I can see a benefit for GMs that use the software for true old style table top or convension games, because all your campaign files are stored and run from your local computer, so you can use its tools without the Internet.

I use it a lot. I find it is very flash intensive, but the voIP tends to be a lot "cleaner." The interface is really neat, but it takes some getting used to and you have to work in pages and layers, but you can draw on the fly too. Great dice roller. Over all, i like it. They do need some obsidian portal like campaign wiki, but you can use google hangout too, which i have not used. I am going to start a mid-week games CST, i am not 100% sure on day atm if you want to check it out, pm me or check the looking for group forum at community.roll20.com

That looks pretty interesting, i watched the quick-start video.....a lot of stuff you can do with that....

Local players around here just aren't interested in Palladium games, so i'm thinking seriously about wanting to run an online game
