Mage vs. Master Psychic... why are skills limited?

I was pondering a concept that is a attached to my beloved master psychics but does not seem to bother the mages. Basicaly its the issue of skills and why a psychic takes a hit to the number of skills they can choose and categories they can choose from. Its explained that they spend so much time developing their powers that they ignore developing skills. Okay
Yet a mage, who has a more extensive collection of powers and abilities in the form of spells and rituals, has a more robust skill package and skill selection options. This is explained away in the logical concept that a mage is a master scholar and has does a lot of research and has a lot of education.
So why would there need be a double standard? Is the idea that a psychic cannot get a similar well developed education and still learn to master their mind?

The question has a Nerd-Joc answer type.
Mage classes a Skills based classes. (i.e.: mages spend time learning things)
Where PCC's a "powers" based classes. (i.e.: psi's spend time developing their powers instead of learning things.)

Well when you have to roll dice to figure out psionics thats only for a minor or a major, and even when you get major you start to take the hit to skills and stuff. But the master psionic is normally a class like mind melter, mind mage, burster, and other fun things. They normally are limited to a very small skill selection and limited in secondaries, I just never really understood why it would take SO much time to develop these powers that it would be impossible for them to learn other useful skills.

Which is wrong, Xavier is massively more intelligent than Doctor Strange and has the potential to to be a Sorcerer Supreme if he were minded to learn magic instead of mastering science.

I for one think the psychic would try to study hard. Why? Because he suddenly had this ability pop up out of nowhere and would probably study trying to figure out why. I agree that the psychic could get more skills as a result of their abilities, not less.

Magic is one skill.
Psionics is many skills.

Certainly they shouldn't get fewer skills, on average, than everyone else. It treats them like school drop-outs who go 'whoa I've these neat abilities I shall now make no effort to learn anything else and focus solely upon them instead', giving exclusive focus to nothing but the psionics.

Well, even if they do focus on them, my point is that they would want to research regarding them and become educated. I think in that regard they should be equal in skills with magic users.
