I always liked Special Training: Secret Operative types. I was a big Nick Fury / SHIELD fan.

I like Aliens as well, and I usually go for the "4-5 minor powers" option (if I'm allowed to choose.)

My faves pretty much in order: Experiments, Mutants, the various spec training (I love the new Demon hunter variant in Armageddon Unlimited, you get tech weapons, hunter/warrior skills, and circle magic, and a bunch of specialized contacts in one package) and honestly I love the physical training. It's funny, I'm known among the PB gamers I know personally as a guy who steadfastly refuses to play a "normal human" in MDC settings, and I'm guilty. However in SDC settings like this I actually enjoy playing guys like the Spec training/physical training types who get by on skills, wits, and weapons alone. LOL, odd I know.

for hardware my favorite is the weapons specialist. and in a mdc setting i agree why play a character that can get killed by a stray laser shot if unarmored.

This is why my pcs run around with a medic. One thing in Rifts, often overlooked, is a medic.

NPC Medic. Most of my players wouldn't play a medic.

Got to go with Alien.

The way I see it, you can play a Hardware guy either way; if you do it as an alien who looks just like us, but is the last of his race, and came here to save mankind from itself, you've automatically got something poignant driving his whole story. (And you can throw in a super power if you want a little crunch along with that flavor -- maybe specifying that he doesn't need to breathe, since the atmosphere of his homeworld was obliterated and he's out to stop us from making the same mistakes -- but that's not really the point.) Likewise, a robot Robot Pilot is strange and cool and adds something different to the mix. (And, again, you can throw in a little something extra: a human Robot Pilot has no powers outside of his vehicle, and can be smirkingly ordered out of it the first time he runs into a psionicist -- but a robot speedster with immunity to such mind control is a tougher customer.)

For that matter, a robot spellcaster is simply too awesome an idea to ignore. (Again, that's regardless of whether he's a magical powerhouse from a high-tech planet: an alien can start play as a mystic with laser blasters in his flying car just in case.) And the "common to all members of that alien race, and are natural aspects of the alien's biology ... not affected by the Negate Super Powers ability" is entirely too intriguing; you're saying there's an entire world of immortals with divine auras, and their outcasts come here, which is just chilling. Or you're presupposing the existence of an entire global culture built around every action provoking instant karmic ramifications, which is just weird. Or, to come back around, you're telling me there's a planet populated entirely by androids with artificial intelligences -- all of whom are forever cloaked from each other?

Or you're letting me play a bulletproof flying strongman who doesn't embarrassingly die of a gunshot the first time a guy with NSP shows up. Or you're letting me play a guy from our world -- where we all have NSP and never get the chance to notice it -- who suddenly finds himself in a silly and outlandish setting, at which point he can selectively disbelieve over-the-top effects away by accurately declaring that he knows this is all just a game; that's a classic, and what's more, it sounds like it could be a lot of fun.

Mutants are fun, you get super powers AND the larger random roll table for unusual features. My longest running was a Hardware Weapons who actually started out as a BTS Weapons Genius. Miles Miller, the Human Arsenal.

Mystically bestowed powers are unique. I had forgotten about those (been without heros book a long time it seems).

Analytical Genius and Natural Genius. The guy who takes a look in the junk yard and does not see the junk yard but the Deminsional Vortex Generator that can be built in it.

for overall character type. i prefer "tanks" strong, tough but heroic, kind, etc. not much into blasters or flyers i like the hand to hand specialists also. something just cool about a "normal" guy slugging it out with super powered villians.

I opt for the jack-of-all-trades: enough mental powers to learn what needs to be done, and enough physical defenses to stay in one piece while doing it.

I do like to go for physical "all arounders". In terms of power sets, I usually prefer to go for 4-5 minor powers, and go for enhanced strength, speed, prowess, endurance, etc. I don't really like playing pure "bricks", I like fast, tough, nimble brawlers. Not someone who can pick up a truck, but tough enough and strong enough to take a few hits from someone who can (and agile enough to dodge most of their blows)
