Good Magic Books

Unread post by FluidicAztec »

So, being a long time Rifts player I've always kinda glossed over magic. But I've gotten really into it lately after picking up the Book of Magic. If I was looking for another good resource what do you recommend? I've heard NB Through the Glass Darkly is an awesome book for magic. And what about PF Mysteries of Magic? Do these books have cool spells not in BOM? Are they applicable to Rifts? Any other magic gems out there? Thanks.

PF Mysteries of Magic 1: yes, they are invocations and Elemental spells.
PF Library of Bletheria: Yes. they are specialty magics converted to invocations & some necro spells.
F3G: yes. Space magic
Mystic China: yes, Chi magic.
May you be blessed with the ability to change course when you are off the mark.

What is F3G?
Mystic China is kinda older. Does it convert easily to Rifts?

F3G is Fleets of the three galaxies. it also has some new temporal magic.

Mystic china overall requires ninja's and superspys to use properly as it's a sourcebook for that line and some rules for matial arts from there are needed, however, the chi magic converts fairly well, in fact several spells have conversion notes built in.

There are also full conversions (what MD or MDC they do/have) in Rifter 3, for the chi magic spells.

Cool...Rifter 3 I've got. Are all the spells in it? Also, is any of Mystic China repeated or RUE'd in Rifts China (WB 24 & 25)? I don't have either Rifts China books. Just wondering if they are a better choice over Mystic China.

No, Mystic China Chi Magic never made it into the Rifts China books. Through the Glass Darkly is one of the best magic suppliments. It has more than just new spells- it has rules for spell modification and invention. Another good book with new spells is Rifts: Mercenary Adventures. Some of those spells are really amazing. There is also Chaos Earth: Rise of Magic - the "Chaos Magic" in there has a lot of great spells, though whether or not any of those spells are available outside of that setting and those O.C.C.'s is a G.M. call.

R3 is pre the disaster that was RUE.(My opinion, you can look about in the old arguments as to why if you are truly interested into the whys.)
The R3 text only cover those spells which "Need Converting." Otherwise those spells not mentioned are the same as in the MC book.
Chi Spells not covered by R3.
Convert Chi to PPE., Create Sparks, Chi-Gun Invocation, Convert pos. Chi to light., Exhale Obscuring Smoke, Reverse Chi, Sense Infernal Influences, Turn Away Dead, Cure Neg. Chi Disease, Disperse Chi, Inscribe Celestial Calligraphy, Sense Alchemical Aura, View Ghost Drama, Draw Knot of Obstruction, Live on Neg. Chi, Open Window to Afterlife, Ward Body, Draw Chi Barrier, Empower Vajra, Enter/Exit Tung Tien: Caverns of Yin, Exhale Poison Cloud , Hsieh Chang: Malignant Miasmal Disease, Chi Chu: Accumulation of Morbid Chi, Exhale Cloud of Acid , Freeze Mudra, Mind Walk, Transmute Object into Chi, Detach Living Gas Cloud, Draw Cage of Chi, Dispel Animus, Enter Realm of Yama Kings, Exorcism, Entice Disembodied Entity, Hsieh Chu Wu: Malignant Epidemic Possession, Invoke Third Eye, Sense Yuan Chi, Create Vajra (just commentary in R3), Draw Entity Trap, Temporarily Restore Youth and Vitality, Impose Moving Area of Non-Ignition, Chi Clone, Chi Cache, Detach Animus, Evoke Immortal Child, Open Hell Gate, Enter the Divine Realm of the Jade Emperor.

After typing all that out, I would guess about 2/5th's of the Chi spells are not covered by R3 optional rifts conversions.

What "chi" magic that was to be in a rifts book, was to be in rifts china three. Even if RC3 ever comes out, and there is something called "chi" magic in it, It will not be the true Chi Magic that is in the Mystic China book.(This get into me calling things for what they are instead of using the incorrect label assigned to them.)
This is because in the RChina books everything that is 'called' chi is really Psionics. (They all use ISP, therefor are psionics. :crane: )
Thus, since the spells would not manipulating Chi, they would not be truly Chi Magic.
