Not sure how this would work
The Game: AtB2.
The PC: Mutant Cougar with Natural Climbing Claws.
The Problem: I didn't take the climbing physical skill or any other physical skill (acro/gym) that imparts an ability/bonus to climbing.
The question #1: Since I naturally have claws that are designed for climbing, can I use them to climb? If so, what is the skill number I have to roll under?
I've seen and adopted a house rule that says, "Without the required skill, roll under the associated attribute" In this case I'd say it was my PP (17). So far for anything UP off the ground I've been using my feline leaping ability to jump up there.
How should I proceed? Is there an official answer anywhere?
Thanks
Question #2 How exactly does the Roll with Punch/fall work?
I think it is like this
A attacks
B rolls to defend
B fails defensive roll
A rolls damage
B can roll with punch to lessen damage. success requires that B meet or exceed A's initial strike roll
Is this correct?
Thanks

Re: Not sure how this would work
Do the claws provide a bonus to climbing. If so (I should think so), just add the bonus to the 17.
As far as Roll With Punch, don't forget that it uses up an melee action.

I swear I saw that you chose to either dodge or roll with the impact, but I have no clue where that was. Most people I've played with though do it the way you wrote.

The way I wrote it was my understanding of the combat rules in AtB2 and the Melee Combat FAQ here on the boards. I've NEVER used it before (roll with punch) so I'm not really sure if it is correct.

In the description of the climbing claws it says, "IF THE CLIMBING SKILL IS SELECTED then climbing claws add 20% to the skill. it doesn't make any mention of what to do if you don't have the skill at all. I sort of assume that you would only be able to use them for melee attacks and not climbing (even though that's what they're intended for).
Side question. Without the climbing skill, which attribute would you try and roll under; PS or PP?

Re: Not sure how this would work
I personally would lean more toward PS because it takes more physical strength to lift your body up. PP would come in handy if you were trying to free hand climb a cliff or a rope ladder.

Re: Not sure how this would work
Either add the bonus to the appropriate attribute, or use it as a base for the skill.
As for which attribute is appropriate, I'd say that either PS or PP would work-just go with whichever is higher, because that's what the character would do.
Strong climbers tend to rely on their strength. Dexterous climbers tend to rely on their dexterity.
People play to their strengths, not to their weaknesses.
(Or, come to think of it, you could average the two attributes)

Re: Not sure how this would work
I would argue PS, simply based on real life. My cats have never been formally trained in how to climb. I have seen one of them jump from the ground to the top of the back of two chairs. I have also seen that same cat climb the back of the chairs to the top for fun. He is using pure muscle from his front legs to pull his way up. His dexterity only comes into play when he is doing it quick to scare the bejezus out of one of the other cats that have jumped into the chair, and even then, he still puts a lot of muscle into it.
