Creating Faerie Food

Unread post by Dinne »

I've gotten everything hashed out for a new player in my group. I know that faeries, like a lot of monsters and creatures of magic, are cross overs. I've always got really great answers from this forum so I post questions pertaining to GM related stuff here.

I think I've got everything, but I was asked a great question by my player. "Can I create more faerie food?" GREAT QUESTION, but I don't know how. I know the answer should be yes, but how the crap do I establish this as a standard procedure?? I would assume that if she/he finds a piece of food they can just "naturally" enchant it. For example, find a beet and turn it into the beet faerie food.

So the questions is: What kind of recommended system should I put in place to make more faerie food?.

PS:Advice on making faerie weapons is great, too. I'm basically saying that the player has to stick with the enchantment they picked and they only make more of those.

Thanks for any responses!! :)

By the text I am thinking the player's char is a fairy of some sort.

If so, then I would say, Yes, they can make fairy food. Unless you don't what them to.

Fairy Weapons.....I would take something from Mystic China page 160, in how the Chi Sword Technique preparation of the sword is done as a basis for developing how an individual fairy making them away from the colony works.
May you be blessed with the ability to change course when you are off the mark.
Each question should be give the canon answer 1st, then you can proclaim your house rules.

Thank you, Drewkitty for your input! (yes it will be a faerie pc)

I totally want them to be able to make food. I think that it's a great way for them to have access the type of pranks that faeries normally do. What kinda system should I do for creating faerie food, though?

Greetings and Salutations. Hmm ... I've tried to give this some thought, but I'm tired and been a little off my game as of late. Also, I've never tested any of this so I don't know if it creates game balance problems or other situations I may not have thought of, so take these ideas for what you will.

Faerie Foods
1: There's enough text to indicate faeries can indeed make more (though details are never clearly stated).
2: The saving throw is the same as Faerie Magic.
3: It's listed (briefly) within power #8 (Faerie Magic) common to most Faerie Folk, which states rules and restrictions for how to use Faerie Magic.

In my opinion Faerie Food can be created, and would suffer the same restrictions as other Faerie Magic. Instead of thinking of this like a different type of Faerie ability, I'd consider it just a sub-category of Faerie Magic, suffering the same restrictions/rules. While that's not much in the way of restrictions, also keep in mind that these are Faeries, who (most of those listed as using it) are small and can't carry much (with a low P.S. and general size considerations).

Faerie Weapons
1: There's even less insight into Faerie Weapons than Faerie Food (oy!).
2: It's mentioned that the magical weapons are used by: "Faeries, Pixies, Bogies, Brownies and Sprites." Note: The "Faeries" mentioned here indicate a specific type of Faeries (of which there are four types), and not a general usage to indicate all Faerie Folk.

While in Rifts Conversion Book One; Revised it mentions "are commonly used by" the races listed in #2 above, in Monsters & Animals (the book they're converted from), the word "commonly" is not there (so it would read: "are used by"). This reduces the amount of ambiguity whether or not others use them (in my opinion).

As such, I'd say that only those races mentioned may create Faerie Magical Weapons. If the player character is any other type of Faerie, then they cannot create them. If the player character is one of the above types, then it follows the rules of Faerie Magic, again (with the same saving throw, again). This once again limits how much can be carried by the character (due to size). Also, since someone affected by Faerie Magic cannot be cast on the same person more than once (regardless if they save or fail) within 24 hours, then that would imply you cannot use a magic arrow on the same person more than once.

Other factors to consider: The Faerie making Magic Weapons has a choice, either make the arrows in advance or to make them as they're needed. If going with the former (making them in advance) the character must make sure there's a way to separate them. Otherwise it's just a random draw (though a faerie may like that randomness?). If going with the former, then making the magical arrow will take time (additional actions per melee), and there are restrictions to how many can be made in a melee round.

All right, that's all I have off the top of my head right now. Hope some of that helps. Thank you for your time and patience, please have a nice day. Farewell and safe journeys for now.

Some of the food is created (like tarts) some is grown (like cauliflower). I would say that an enchantment is placed on normal ingredients at some point.

The exact point is up to you and how much PPE it costs.

Could there be a time of day when to enchant.

fairy magic doesn't use PPE.

do fairies have farms where they grow their own food, or do they buy/steal/trade with normal farms to get the stuff for it? if they grow their own, i'd say their cultivation methods are the cause of the special effects of the food.

on the otherhand, maybe they 'summon' the food via magic, either creating it out of nothing or transmuting normal organic materials around them.

We are talking about something that this player is going to make up. It's not real or canon. It's up to him. He may decide it costs zero. He may decide it costs 50K.
