I always liked systems failure-- it was naice little game that didn't get enough love.
But I was thinking-- powered by organic energy? Modifying it via genetics-- why it seems tailor made for robotech, but how to add it?
Now note, any of my ideas move from one assumption. The Shadow Chronicles never, ever happened. The Haydonites did not try to nuke the earth. All the protoculture did not go away. Rick Hunger was not nearly killed by Edwards and his decaying body does not sit upon teh protoculture throne tended by the Adapetus-er, anyway, you get my point.
So how best to introduce them? Something cooked up during the invid invasion by a clever gang of misfits? Maybe modified invid mecha or things bred from invid?

Would now be a bad time to point out that that's basically what Carl Macek's original post-facto explanation for protoculture was? Mecha powered by life force.
Also something the Inbit do in the original Genesis Climber MOSPEADA.

Oh true, but I like the idea that someone has figure dout how to grow it and may be weaponize their very own inbit armor...
