Our understanding of the rules for Close formation Damage split is as follows:
Each attack is treated separately.
Multiple Mecha may shield the same Mecha from an attack as long as they each shield a different attack.
Example as Follows: All Mecha are in Combat formation.
"T" = Mecha Target
"A" = Mecha 1
"B" = Mecha 2
"C" = Mecha 3
"D" = Mecha 4
Step 1:
"T" is attacked.
"A" shields "T"
Step 2:
"T" is attacked again.
"C" shields "T" this time.
Step 3:
"T" is attacked again
"B" shields "T". Why? Because a Mecha may only shield ONE other Mecha. Therefore "A,B,C,D" can all Choose "T" to be the Mecha they shield.
Step 4"
"T" is attacked again.
"D" shields "T".
As long as "ABCD" only shield one other Mecha (in this case "T") you are within the confines of the rules. The rules do not state that a Mecha may only be "Shielded" once per turn. They can each only shield one attack for the turn though.
This is how a Glaug can survive an entire Veritech formation from picking him off.
The rules as written seem to want you to prevent splitting the damage of EACH attack over more than one other Mecha.
Hope this makes sense as written guys.
Splitting damage in close formation is for EACH attack.

That is how we have been playing at the Pasadena store.

That is Also how we have been playing it in Vegas.

Re: Splitting damage in close formation is for EACH attack.
I get how this works, but in practice; it is easier said than done. It can be very easy to eliminate the bubble wrap with one unit of RDF forces...then blow the Glaug away with multiple missile strikes from another unit, in which...even rolling with impact..will still knock out the Glaug. It's even easier to do if it's the recon pod as it has no defenses of it's own. This can even be done with battloids and their rapid fire 3 times in a turn (an interpretation I do not agree with but isn't clear).

Incorrect....you choose your targets...then fire. You cannot use a battloid and say the first shot on this pod and now that he's dead the next two shots on the Glaug behind him. You must declare EVERY shot from every unit in close formation with each other at once before rolling dice.
A good reason to split squadrons is to allow attacks from one half go off first and then the other half of the squadron as long as both halves are not in close formation with each other.
