Does anybody have an idea how they would use this skill if a PC wanted to use it to generate income?

Likely, when the PC starts a business, you roll to see if the business is profitable by year's end.
For something short term, roll to see if the PC can take an investment, and turn it around at a profit within the month or so.

Been a *long* time since I read into this world...
Still prefer 1st ed.

It is more an NPC skill...along with the class that it comes in.
