Autistic Crazy

Unread post by Blackwater Sniper »

I’ve been binge-watching “The Good Doctor” (again) and I found myself asking the usual question: “Can I use any of this in a Rifts Game?”

So, would you ever play a character who underwent Crazy-conversion and it failed, making you autistic not the psychic ninja promised in the brochures. Maybe you went to a cheap doctor, had cheap/malfunctioning implants, your brain didn’t heal correctly, or it was revenge (the doctor was paid to botch the surgery).

Are there any other “failed” versions of OCCs you have used or think would work? I don’t mean those who already have a “failed” version as canon.
So what if I don’t know what apocalypse means? It’s not the end of the world!

Not my cup of tea.

However, was thinking what if you turned it around... the autistic savant from BTS2 who might be subjected to Crazy augmentation as a possible cure with unanticipated consequences.

The Slave Borg is a good possibility; just throw in some breakdown penalties and probabilities to reflect substandard bionics.

The Armies and Works that you hold Dear,
Are to him but the Playthings of the Moment,
To be turned over with the Flick of a Finger,
And the Turning of a Page"

Psionics would be a natural fit with autism. Maybe make a psionic character that had enhanced psionic abilities (ISP total, regen speed, whatever), but lost the ability to communicate verbally. Has zero social skills because they spend so much time ignoring their physical senses that they don't relate to people at all. Can only communicate telepathically, can only understand others' feelings through use of Empathy.

The Psi-Tech OCC already touches on this theme, to a lesser extent.

Two disparate sources for autistic/Asperger's characters.

1) Parker, from Leverage - She was specifically written, IIRC, as Autistic/Asperger's. Natural for a city rat, but a crazy kind of works too.

2) Dr. K from (believe it or not) Power Rangers R.P.M. Olivia Tennent did an amazing job with her, and she may not have been written as autistic, but she really works as a model.
