Phase World and Teleporting

Unread post by Zenvis »

I was wondering how everyone treated Teleporting from planet to ship and ship to ship and ship to planet. In my campaigns the
1) UWW have teleportation via teleport circles
2) the CCW via technology
3) and likewise the TGE have it via technology.

I made it so that it was possible between ships but not a ship to planet or planet to ship. (I didnt want to be too much like Star Tr... well you know.) I was wondering again how everyone else does it.

In my adventures, teleporting technology is scarce. Only a few societies actually possess the technology to do so (at least in my adventures). The one group that does have it, requires a clean line of sight to the target, and a maximium range of 100miles. Teleporting into a place you cannot verfy is empty of solid space is dangerous, and this group uses beacons to locate and confirm where they can teleport. Likewise is there is heavy material (eg debris field, ship hull) or radiation (force fields) inbetween the two points, then bad things can and do happen.

From the books, the prometheans have it down that they can teleport troops within the Centre, and would probably have overcome the problems I've introduced into my games. Teleporting technology should be handled carefully, because of the tactical advantage it gives (as my players have used and have learnt from :-P )

seems kinda like a waste, unless the "straight line" means you can't bridge large holes or such, and of course the Phase power always works 100%.

Phase teleportation can't really be used in combat...D-leap can.

I too make it rare for most civilizations to have long-range teleporting capablities. Of course on Phase World it could be relatively easy to do as such, if you're on the right level.

I believe that technologically speaking, Teleporting cannot happen except under certain circumstances...primarily among those few races that actually have the tech. The CCW and TGE are not among them (since they are "Galactic Average," and technological teleportaion is beyond such...except as possibly highly experimental (and very unreliable/dangerous) technology).

The Manhunter book has something one Teleporting in it's ship creation section otherwise I make it almost non existant exept for Promethean designed ships and maybe UWW.

My thought is that it is two part system . Each half is linked to the other allowing matter flow between them only . Image a ship needs to launch a probe to the planet surface from orbit . The probe is the planet side half of the teleporter .

The problems with this system
1 No one can secretly beam down to the planet . The planet defense system will see the entry path.

2 The crew will still have to travel over land to interesting site . " captain , the scan show a open field ten kms to the north"

3 The probe needs to recovered by shuttle craft , destoryed by bad guys , and so on .

My phase world notes has greater details . My harddrive is currently hiding them on me .
