Now that you mentioned it, I do realize the plot/logic holes. Here are some of my suggestions:
Weapons left at a murder scene is/was a common mystery plot hook. One reason that the knives may have been left behind would be to create a reverse psychological effect. As no one would be stupid enough to leave such evidence behind, it could act as "cover up". Complex, elaborate plan? Yes.
If the daggers belong to the murdered nobles, naturally, the authorities will assume that those whom have those daggers are responsible. If nothing else, it will cause the authorities to waste time examining a 'dead end'.

Oh no, my dear boy, please do not ever apologize for using the spellchecker. I applaud you for utilizing that sadly neglected tool! On behalf of stickler spellers everywhere, thank you.

Unfortunately, using the spell checker is only the first step in proofreading. Reading being the operative word and actually having a dictionary handy (www.m-w.com if you're too poor to buy one) is important, too.
I do agree that the whole process is sorely neglected, though.

Even though I have a dictionary in my possession, the inclusion of a web site that serves the same function is always useful. Thanks.

Glork...keep using the Spell Checker - just remember to click on "ignore" when it comes to a word it doesn't know but is spelled right. Same thing you'd do when using a spell checker on a Word Processing program!
