Automatic Air Defense?

Unread post by bigwhitehound »

In the Hammer's Slanners books the Tanks have a auto defense system. Rifts earth has higher tec (or so I assaume), so why dosen't the CS or NGR have this type of tech? In south america 2 Cordaba and Santiago have it ( called the strobe laser array system), and they are less advanced than the CS & the NGR. With the trade between Cordoba and the CS one would think they could get it very easily.

NGR Auto-Air Defense

The Jaeger has an optional AA package that will automatically engage airborne targets with a double-shot attack to leave the pilot free to engage ground targets. It's a sweet package system! :ok: :D It can be found in the Triax & NGR Worldbook (#5) at the end of the Jaeger section.

One of the things I have done is to take the Northern Gun RCS/Response Computer System (found in JU) and adopted it for a wide variety of vehicles and bots, matching it with the various smaller laser turrets such as those found on the Enforcer's shoulders, also the Hellraiser, Hellfire or the turrets found on the Mark V and VII APC's.

One thing I think of is the modern day Phalanx CIWS used on modern naval warships. 20mm gatling gun with an insane 133 round rounds/second, and ammo belts over a thousand rounds. The system is mainly computer operated. It uses radar tracking, locks onto something designated as a hostile (I guess one designated by a human operator), and it proceeds to turn the target into effective confetti w/ Tungsten Sabot rounds.

Simply down scale the system (like a much smaller radar system, and an AI with large IFF database), maybe replace the gun with something not so overkill (like something that isn't doing an estimated 1D6 MD 133 times per second for over 10 seconds...)

Oh, based on all those old GB/BG threads (estimated Boom Gun slug size/mass, etc), the newer navy 20mm CIWS w/ tungsten would probably shred even a few GBs with relative ease, so it would be good for making it suicidal for anything to be flying within a few miles of whatever is packing such a system.

On a side note, using such a system on ground targets would be lethal also, at least until it wasted all of its ammo... (not that much would still be alive after eating several thousand MD worth of tungsten sabot rounds... )

One idea I remember mentioned once (I think it was one of the military members on the board who came up with it) was using something like skelebots mounted on CS vehicles and using them for defensive measures. Perhaps even "recycle" damaged skelebots into vehicle mounted automated defenses.

Thanks for the ideas

Cool! I never thought about useing skelabots. Remove there legs, mount them on a 360 degree turret, and bang AAD. Kind of odd looking though. Useing a simple AI to control the light weapon systems of a vehicle is a good idea I'll problely use it.
