Dig Your Own Hole!!!!!

Unread post by UR Leader Hobbes »

Ok this is totally wacked..

Dwarves & Gnomes dig at a speed of 1d6. Now that can't be the same as running is it?

I mean if I roll a 6 for digging and snake eyes for running I've got a guy who can dig faster then they can run..

Check out the speed chart on page 18. With a mere digging speed of 5 you can dig a whooping 3 1/2 miles per hour..

Thats almost as much as your average human can walk in an hour..

Does anyone know if there is a seperate chart for digging?

If it is on the same ratio as the running atribute then immagine teams of gnome archeologists! They could unearth entire civilazations in a matter of days.. If thats the case the entire Old Kingdom could be excavated in a matter of a few years by gnomes alone..

Gnomes are just cool like that.

One thing to note though, is that Digging is differenent from Tunneling or Excavating.

TMNT, p. 27

Digging- Only the character's body is moved through the dirt, no tunnel is left behind. Works in mud, sand, and dirt.

Tunnelling- leaves a passable tunnel

Excavation- can hollow out large, underground chambers.

It also has a chart for mutant animals to determine how fast they dig based on their PS score. The fastest is PS of 25+; they can dig at a rate of 6'/melee

Ok that does absolutely no good sense the section your talking about falls under the "Animal Powers" section. Also thats for an entirely different setting by a different author..

Also those powers are baised off of PS and not a rolled atribute for speed as digging is for gnomes and dwarves.. So it doesn't exacytly help...

Anyone else have any better suggestions?

You must have missed the SPD attribute or half read it. It states that SPD 2D6 running- 1D6 digging.
This can be found in the main rule book under the Player Races section.
We may be through with the past, but the past is not through with us.

another year come and gone without a PF release. :(

No I'm 100% aware that the atribute for running is 2d6 and digging is 1d6.

My point is I'm trying to figure out just exactly how much a gnome can dig per turn..

Lets say I have a gnome with a spd of 6 and digs at a spd of 6

Now SPDx20 is the number of yards the character can run in one minute. (PG 16)

So 120 yards per min. 4 melees per minute so divide that by 4 and you get 30 yards per min. Lets just say this is a gnome wizard with 3 actions..
So that boils down to 10 yards or 30 feet per action that the little fella can run..

Now his digging is also a 6. How much/far can he dig in the same ammount of time?

What I'm saying is that the gnomes diggign speed can't be on the same ratio as the running spd. atribute. I mean you can't seriously think that a two and a half foot tall gnome can dig over a football field in length in just a minute can ya?

SO my real question is how far can the gnome dig with a digging SPD of 6?

I answered your question when I said "Yup. Gnomes are cool like that."

As in: YES, GNOMES AND DWARVES DIG REALLY FAST.

The TMNT section is relevent because that's the only Palladium book the defined digging. It should be of interest to you because it points out that digging doesn't work in rocky soil, and that you don't leave a tunnel behind you when you dig (That's Tunneling.)

Caught up?

Besides, gnomes are magical creatures in mythology... elementals, even.
Being able to bend physics when in their native element isn't that bizarre.
Certainly no weirder than Changlings powers

Well, the problem is there should be no attribute for diggind speed. There are so many factors that go into digging it's not really useful to have that number. Ignore it and just go with a common sense approach.

To heck with Gnomes and Dwarves. Just give a pack of Orcs some shovels and tell 'em to get to work. 8)
