The skills Detect Ambush and Detect Concealment are usually used for such things.
Eyes without life, maggot-ridden corpses, mountains of skulls... these are a few of my favourite things.

Well, I know Nightbane mentions something about "bonuses to Perception", but I haven't the feintest idea about them.

Nightbane has the perception rules in the main book. it says to use IQ on the ME chart for your bonus to perception as well as augmented senses from various things can give bonuses to be left up to the GM's discretion

Here's what I do. It's not canon, but it works really well. The IQ attribute maxes out at 30 according to the books, meaning most people have about a thrid of the maximum possible when they roll up their character (avg of 10-11). As such for spot checks (perception rolls, whatever) or anything remotely related to the brain power of a character, I have the players roll a 1D30 against their IQ. In additon to that, the character's level of experience acts as a bonus to the roll. So if a 4th level city rat has to make such a roll and he has an IQ stat of 12, then he needs to roll a 16 or less on a D30. And of course penalties are just as easily factored in. Quick, simple and to the point.

How do you roll a D30? Is it a combination of other dice or some strange die I've never seen?
The word "THAN" is important. Something is "better than" something else, not "better then", it's "rather than" not "rather then".

I suppose you could just add 1d10 to 1d20, or 3d10. I'm not really into buying novelty dice.

They actually sell d30s out there, they do exist. A buddy of mine bought one and would roll it to determine day of the month (just so he could use it). They tend to be expensive though so I've never picked one up since no major RP system uses them.

They're not all that expensive, comparable speaking.

Go HERE and pick any color you like.

Personally I like my Otherworld Blue or Purple since I have matching sets for them from Crystal Caste.
