Nega-Psychic

Unread post by dark brandon »

Just a thought on what you all think of them. I think they can be detrimental to a group, at the same time a good savoir. While I like the nega-psychic, I dislike the fact should they ever accept it, they lose all of their abilities. Personally, I would have gone with if they ever started believeing in the supernatural, their description would instead revert to the nega-psychic in Rifts.

Quick question..If a nega ends up believing, can he eventually "unbelieve"? Like, his team knows of his abilities and he was so much stronger when he denied it they set up some sort of ploy to basically help him disprove it, or are his abilities gone for good, even if he believes the explination/ploy?

For example, after spending a week in hell fighting demons, he ends up believeing in monsters. So his friends when he gets back to the real world, knock him out, and place him in a hospital (pay the doctors and stuff tons of money), and tell him he's been in a coma the last week after getting hit by a fire truck.

To me, a Nega can beleive in monsters.

A monster is just a term commonly applied to a strange and dangerous animal that science has not properly identified yet.

Science is finding new animals all the time.

Nothing supernatural at all. heck, bigfoot might be a real ape-man, there's enoguh evidence that somethign might exist. Doesn't make it supernatural.

To me the Negapsychic refuses to believe in anything that cannot be rationally explained by science. It's that simple. If he can rationalize it scientifically then his powers are unaffected.

Even in the face of insurmountable 'proof' the nega always comes up with something. He sees the wires nobody else notices, he remembers that what they had for lunch tasted off and might cause hallucinations, he's the one who submits that the stress of the situation made them all highly suggestible and when one of the group started yelling about a ghost, they all ended up seeing it . . .

Basically the Nega char insane - he refuses to allow personal experience to override his irrational belief that the supernatural and paranormal are not real.

Of course you can always go with the Rifts negapsychic route: In this case it's a defiance style belief. the Nega beleives that any monster or magic or psychic power simply can't affect him unless he lets it. So he doesn't let it.

I have always liked the Nega-Psychic as a BtS character. I found that they really have no place in Rifts, because you cannot disbelieve what is clearly staring you in the face, and besides, magic and the Supernatural are so much more powerful in Rifts. BtS was never the playground for the mutitudes of dragons, gods and godlings, alien intelligences, Rune weapons, and so on, and so the Nega-Psychic had a more logical place to belong to.

actually, in Rifts, nega-pychics do believe in monsters and stuff (kinda hard not to) but they are more like "You may be a dragon, whatever, humans are not just gonna roll over and die." they are more like defy the impossble. Which I think really works.

The only problem I have with them in BTS is that they can hamper friendly mages/pychics and this would usually lead off into the group splitting up and I never did like that.

:::ponders, then shudders:::

They wouldn't know they were disrupting magic/psychic stuff in the first place, because they don't believe in it, so they wouldn't know to gather in great numbers.

I never really liked that rationale. It made sense, but it took that whole nonbeliever element out of the Nega Psychic, and that was the cool part. The reason for their disruption of the supernatural was just turned into a less enjoyable characteristic, IMHO.

This was one of the good elements, which forced the other characters to come up with some pretty creative plans and ideas in order to triumph over their adversaries. And, they often did it without splitting up , or at least not going to far from each other relatively speaking.

More like

Nega:
Obviously you are mistaken. There is no such thing as demons. Probably the combination of darkness and dismembered corpses has made you highly suggestive that the "thing" over in the darkness, which is probably an owl, is something supernatural and evil. Clearly, if you shine the flashlight over on it you will find that . . .

Yeah, that pretty much desribes the evening.
One of my favorite BtS games involved a haunted office building, which was being investigated by one group of PCs, which had also been taken over by a gang of thieves with office hostages, which was being managed by a different group of players simultaneously. One of the characters was a Nega-Psychic. His disbelief was only so helpful to him, as he couldn't make the demons go away, and there were criminals shooting at him.

Yeah. I got a lot more "meh" about BtS 2 when I found out they kept that stupid "monsters aren't real" nega-psychic.
As seen in Rifter 20
Called "disturbing" by Therumancer.
Was informed that "Recommending the destruction of a third of the nation is not appropriate."

Just do what I do and don't allow them to be used, at least not as PC’s. They make great villains/spoilers though.

Yeah, going up agaisnt a Nega is something most players don't expect.

They make a great head honcho for an MIB style group.

*watches Lazlo Society to see if that pops up*
