Revealing the Minor Pantheon

Unread post by Reagren Wright »

I'm something of a mythology buff (one of the reasons I love RPGs
I guess), and because the Church of Light/Dark has these other
gods in the minor pantheon that are never used, I thought everyone
would be interested in seeing who these unknown gods are in
the "real world." Perhaps you might want to include them in your own
games as I have, with a few minor modifications.

Anat or Anath is a near Eastern (Canaanite) war goddess. She is
portrayed with a helmet, shield, and a spear in her right hand. A
battle axe or club in her left. The lion was her sacred animal. She put
on makeup before she went into battle and go into a berserker rage.
She was known as the slayer of serpents. Once she sent a flock of
eagles to kill a guy because he wouldn't give her his bow.

Bast or Bastet is the Egyptian cat goddess. She can be seen in Rifts
South American 2.

Geb is the Egyptian Earth god. The father of Osiris, Isis, Nephthys,
and Set. He is seen wearing a goose on his head. Ra ordered him and
his wife/sister Nut seperated. He wasn't to happy about it. Did a lot of
crying and whining.

Khnum is the Egyptian god of potters. He supposedly made humans
on a potter's wheel. He is a ram headed god. He also controlled the
annual flood of the Nile.

Meskent is the Egyptian goddess of childbirth. She is also the one
who sat next to the scales when the deceased heart was being
weighted to determine if he or she would pass on to the next
life in the underworld. She served as a character witness for
the deceased. She could predict the future of any child.

Nephthys is the Egyptian goddess of death and magic. She is the
wife/sister of Set, the twin sister of Isis. She is the mother of
Anubis. She feel in love with Osiris because she couldn't stand
Set and his evil ways. But Osiris wanted nothing to do with her.
So she trick him into bed by impesonating her sister. Set wasn't
happy about it. She mourned Osiris' death and vowed to help
her sister resurrect him after assembling all his body parts
together, in fact she plays a key role in his resurrection.

Sekhir or Seker or Sokar is a hawk headed Egyptian god who made
silver bowls in which the dead washed their feet. He traveled the
land in a great flying boat. A craftsman. Mixed herbs and spices
to make ointments for the funeral rites of humans.

Serket or Serquet is the Egyptian Scorpion Goddess. An enemy of
Apepi. She protetect the throne of the pharaoh. Her main duty was
to repel evil. A traveling companion of Isis. She is a scorpion with the
head of a woman. She has special province over the entrails of the
dead.

Seshat is the Egyptian Goddess of the Library. The scribe of the gods.
She is potrayed wearing a headdress adorned with a seven pointed
star and a panther-skin robe. She kept note of taxes and the spoils
won in war.

Upuat :-? I tried my best but I couldn't find anything of this guy.
He must be truly forgotten.

Enjoy :D

Very nice! Good to have that information compiled in one place.

And here's my contribution...

Upuat (or Upuatu, or Apuat): Egyptian wolf-headed underworld god, who
serves as lieutenant for Osiris and then Horus. His name literally means
"The Opener of the Ways." He is an associate of Anpu (Anubis) and performs
a roll similar in mythology to Charon, facilitating the movement of the
dead to wherever they're going. Pictured as Anubis is except he is white
or gray instead of black, he guides souls to their place of rest after their
hearts are weighed against the feather.
