Lamest OCC in N&S

Unread post by Guest »

What do you consider the lamest O.C.C. in N&S, and why?

I gotta go with the Commando Mercenary myself, all it is is a bad version of the Veteran Grunt.

the Dedicated is the lamest, too few skills, not enough bonuses, the worldly one Gets more everything then the dedicated.

Agreed. We run a skills-heavy game. For our games, you'd have to be crazy to pick that and not ask for a GM's blessing of more skills.

Only if you use the crappy revised edition versions of the martial artist classes as written though. If I was voting for the most broken OCC, I would have listed both of them together.

It's not that I think the DMA is lame: I just think it's been heavily hamstrung by the game designer.
I prefer to use Rifts OCCs like the Mystic Ninjas and Traditional Samurai over the DMA as is.

Actually, Erick's not the one responsible for the DMA getting hamstrung (even though he hasn't told us who is, we can probably guess).

As for the RJ OCCs, all I gotta say is "ICK" I thought they were worse than any of the N&S OCCs.

Ericks' name is the one associated most with it, so I blame him. I could blame big Kev too, but Erick should have talked him out of it.

Eh, they had Skills, they could choose martial arts, what was not to like?
The Mystic Ninja with Ninjitsu from N&SS was better than the DMA, and the Samurai with Zanji was okay, especially with the additional skills and Family Background and stuff. Stuff like that would have been nice for N&SS in the first place.

Erick's already taken great pains to disassociate himself with the "revised" edition.

Badly researched stereotypes, uber-powers, limited skills selections.
The Mystic Ninja with Ninjitsu from N&SS was better than the DMA,
MUCH better, so much better that they're twice as powerful as DMAs, even the originals.
and the Samurai with Zanji was okay, especially with the additional skills and Family Background and stuff. Stuff like that would have been nice for N&SS in the first place.
Actually the Samurai "Family Background" was pretty hokey. I like the ideas of Samurai and Ninja OCCs, but Rifts Japan is not the guideline I'd use for having them.

I think they all do great when played right and "de-hamstrung" ;)

I said the Private Eye just because I've never seen one played and never could think of a way to involve one in half my campaigns.

Heh. I've got a P.I. character, he's my third longest-running. He's actually played as a police officer.

I like the OCCs in general
but the lamest possible is the
professional theif.

But its still usefull and serves game
master purposes
Svartalf- if Cherico were a character created in a point game system, he'd have all his scores in geeky skills and his youtube and weird net stuff schticks all paid through a a Terminal Bad Luck (with more nasty GM intervention) disadvantage, and probably an Uncouth (can not have social skills) disad as well...
In an RPG with deadly situations that character would have had to be replaced a dozen times over[

Okay, so why does the Academy Officer have a bunch of votes? (Like I can't guess...the lack of a full blown martial art no doubt.)

 Might have a little something to do with it.

I have used the Academy Officer, but only in part because my GM allowed my to upgrade HtH Martial Arts to HtH Jujutsu (Rifts).

As I said it's more from lack of seeing it ever played than anything else. One of the tings I really love about N&S is how EVERY OCC is kick ass when played right, even as written in Revised. I still follow a variation of pre-revised rules myself, however... :D

Personally, I think they need to edit out several of the OCCs' ability to select martial arts, the Commando Merc, Cyborg Soldier, Thief, Wired Agent, Gadgeteer Agent, Cyber Agent, and Pro Free Agent should not have been given access to martial arts, their other abilities are supposed to counter that (with the possible exception of the Commando Merc, which never should have been included in the first place).

I feel the dedicated martial artist is the lamest in N&S, again because of available skills. However, if you combine this with the ancient master from HU AND allow exclusive martial arts to be picked, you get an interesting character. Someone similar to Black Mamba's sensei from Kill Bill: Volume 2.

I don't so much mind them having access to martial arts styles: I just prefer that they not have access to most martial arts powers (body hardening an exception).

More quickie styles would have fixed that.

I don't get it Kuseru, on your website you say: "lets face it, even with the extra physical skills and martial art powers, the WMA sucks compared to most of the Agent OCCs" but your solution seems to be to make them less powerful :? (removal of the physical skill selections and special bonuses from WMA, but no change to the agents???)

I may be a little off topic, but it has to do with opinions of sucky OCCs :P

DMA in revised book is too weak when compared to the other occ's in that book. There seems to be no point to why it is even in the book. The occ's in Japan a little too powerful.

Though the occ's in MC when compared to N&SS revised book are weak, they are the way to go for martial artist occ's in Palladium books (IMO).
