Mis-Mated pairs

Unread post by Sentinel »

We've all seen them: Sword and Whipchain, Sword and Dagger, Sword and Shield, Nunchaku and Tonfa, Sai and Tonfa, Balisong and short stick and so on.
How do you deal with / allow the use of single weapons in tandem.
Paired, with the provision that the character must have each individual weapon proficiency? Do they need the Kobujutsu Kata? Do they get any special bonus against their opponents? (or, are their opponents at a penalty/disadvantage?)

offically, it seems you need a WP Paired for each individual combo.

they are at no special advantage nor are their oppents at a special disadvantage, other than the fact your using two different weapons.

Now, do you just stick with the official rules (or, rules by default, since there is no specific mention of how to do mis-matched pairs although there are some)?
Or, do you have a set of house rules that makes some sense to you (if no one else)?

I'd stick with the official rules, insofar as they make sense.

Nope, it's just that many (though not all) of the existing weapon kata in N&S and MC have specific paired combinations in mind, as in, that's what the style teaches. The best example of where this is the case is MC's 18 Weapons Style, with it's huge list of weapon pair combos, both for singular weapon types and different weapon combinations.
The best example of where this is not the case is the weapon kata of Te, where you can select from Bo staff, Sai - Paired, Nunchaku - Paired, or [Dun Dun Dun]Paired Weapons[/Dun Dun Dun]*.
*Ironically, the only Weapon Kata listed above that isn't already paired is the Bo staff, a two-handed weapon, which means you'd have to spend some of those martial art powers to get the weapon kata to use with the Paired Weapons if you wanted to get any real value out of it.
