Weak sales . . .
Sales we’re lousy at the comic con. It didn’t help that our booth was in the last row of dealers at the back of the hall.
Our booth was half toys and half Palladium RPG books.
A lot of people looked at toys, but few were buying. Most seemed to have very specific wants and looking for good deals.
A handful of gamers popped by and purchased some books, but as this was a comic book and media star convention, gamers were definitely a minority.
From a purely financial point of view, exhibiting at Motor City Comic Con was a bust.
On the other hand . . .
The convention was a great success reconnecting with old friends and hooking up with creative talent.
I ran into Dirk Johnson who did artwork for the original Robotech series. Terry Williams (one of my Defilers), Tony Falzon (another Defiler), and number of current gaming pals that included Chris and Jonathan Guertin, Jeff and Joe Hansen, Denis from Wonder World, the artistic and energetic Ben Rodriguez, Jim Cross, Lynn Hooper, and many others.
Had a long, enjoyable conversation with William Messner-Loebs and his wife, Nadine. If he has time, Bill will be contributing to the Rifter Swimsuit issue. So might Bill Bryan, a looong time artist and comic book pal. In fact, we worked together on A+plus.
Hooked up with Dave Dorman, with whom I had lost contact. Dave is the wonderful painter who did the covers to the Rifts G.M. Guide, Xiticix and most of the books in the Coalition Wars series. You can count on seeing more from Dave in the future.
Talked with the talented comic artist/writer Tommy Castillo and we “may” work on a new RPG together in 2007.
Chatted with Gary Reed, Guy Davis and Vince Locke all of whom got their comic book start with Caliber Comics.
Said hello to Jim Steranko, got to meet John Saxon (from Enter the Dragon fame), Marcia Wallace (Bob Newhart Show), Larry Thomas (the Soup Nazi from Sienfeld), and a number of other celebrity types who were all nice folks.
Got Kathy a really cool Birthday gift (her birthday and Alex Marciniszyn's are coming up the first part of June).
It was meeting and visiting with all these folks that made the Comic Con worth going to and the only reason I’d ever consider going back.
It will be interesting to see how we fair at Origins and Gen Con. Looking forward to seeing fans, chatting, signing autographs and having fun at both of those shows.
Sincerely,
Kevin Siembieda
