Mutant plants?

Unread post by Natalya »

First, I'll admit to having just the older stuff. So if this is listed in AtB2, other sourcebooks, or Rifters, please let me know.

I would like to create some mutant plants for my game. Has anyone created such a thing, and if so would you mind sharing it? Thanks.

I've only got vague ideas right now, but these would basically be NPCs. Evil ivy that strangles wayfarers (who think they are safe because no one is around) in their sleep, jungle trees afraid of slash-n-burn and offering rare (non-sentient) plant locations in exchange for having the burning stopped, a bored rosebush offering something in exchange for being dug out of the queen's garden (too bad the penalty for vandalism, if caught, is death....which should lead to an interesting planning session) and replanted in a location of its choosing, the sight of a dozen daisies, with leg-like appendages, marching down the road and kvetching about the horse to the north who likes to nibble.....lots of potential storylines, if I can get a good template.

You may want to check out taalism's old post Random Exotic Plants(non-monster) for tons of ideas.

From the old TMNT/ATB line, I recommend the books Transdimensional TMNT, Mutants Down Under, and Mutants of the Yucatan for a variety of plant problems. Guide to the Universe may also have some useful information in it's section on aliens.

Guide to the Universe does have some things, but i think it is under the "wild planet" entry, and is the same as what is in TDTMNT (when earth becomes a wild planet in a future twist.)

I find that TSR's "Gamma World" is a good RPG to look at for mutated plants. The other sources everyone else mentioned are good choices also (mutants down under talks about carnivourus plants also).

I'm not a fan of using plant life as sentient beings.

Carniverous plants don't need to be sentient, just more agressive than say the venus flytraps you'd be accustomed to today..

That's REAL LIFE. I'm talking PALLADIUM. Confuse the two at your own peril :)

That's different. I've used that before in my campaigns, but as far as letting PCs or NPCs be mutant plants, no.
