Lightspeed?

Ok, I was asked how long is a lightyear, after giving the smartass remark, the question was clarified to "How many miles in a lightyear?".
Well I didn't know so I looked it up, the sad thing is I still don't know.
5.879 trillion statute miles is the "recommended" usage, but what is it really?
Oh, and another thing I realised whilst researching this topic, it is impossible to stop someone from escaping into lightspeed without destroying their FTL drive.
So I'm borrowing an idea from another space game and introducing several classes of ships (one for each of the major powers, at least) that are capable of generating an artificial gravity well to pull ships out of lightspeed.

Artificial gravety well large enough to pull a ship out of FTL..That is one hell of a big ship, or at least gravity well.
EDIT,
Knowledge is power, power corrupts, study hard, be evil.
I want this as a bumper sticker.

IIRC, it only has to be about 1/2 G to interfere with a ships FTL.
But I will check before using it.

Cool spell, do up a bunch of them and submit them to the rifter.

~62 or so at last count.
a few are weird, some are fairly cool:
I've been telling him that for a while now. Someone kick Gadrin in the kester and get him to submit to the Rifter for all to enjoy

actually, they never defined how big an object has to be before you get an interdiction effect.
all we have is that an 'earth like planet' creates a radius of 40,000 km.
since gravity is said to be the reason, we can assume 'earth like' means 1
g. since the effects of gravity scale, a 2g world would have a radius 2x bigger, a .5g world would be 1/2 the radius, ect.
as for artificial generation of said effect, if you read my techmanual, i sort of explain how. basically, gravity bends space. CG drives operate by bending space as well. the FTL mode CG drive effect cannot be created if local space is bent enough already.
since CG drives work by selectively and artificially bending space, you don't have to create a true gravity well, instead you could use a CG drive built to create a uniform 'warping' effect on local space over a large area. (not as big of an area as a planet, but ideal for keeping a nearby enemy from escaping into FTL.)

That is a great spell Gadrin. I think you also should submit your work to the Rifter!
