Ixnay on the Stinkay

I hate to bring up this subject, but I am convention veteran with 25 years of running games at conventions big and small. I recently had a round table discussion about the pros/cons of conventions with a bunch of gamers. The group was mixed with con-goers and non-coners (or wankers as I call them!) and the NUMBER ONE downside people talked about was DA FUNKY SMELLS. I posted a thread on RPG.net and Da Stinky sadly came up as a major downside for many people.

Now, Da Funky Smells is an overhyped stereotype of convention gamer experiences, but when it does happen, it is...horrifying.

Sunday is often Da Funky Smell day as people who may have seen some hydrogen + hydrogen + oxygen combination on Friday, but neglected any future shower involvements due to all-day and all-night gaming.

I called the Ramada Inn Downriver and they assured me that ALL the rooms have showers with lots of warm water AND free soap. I encourage everyone to experience this thrill of combining water and soap and your unmentionable gamerness every day!

I promise that each "Scrub a dub a dub" is worth 200 XP.

If this offends anyone, tough noogies. I truly love my dice tossing bretheren more than any other demographic (even those D20 heathens), but I know my bretheren very well and it never hurts to send a gentle reminder! :-D

And Spinachcat will be on-call 24 hours a day, should any of you need your back scrubbed. 8-)

So, now I'm a little worried... who's keeping tally again? :erm: :?

:P

IIRC, it was not a problem in the slightest. Palladium fans, the most loyal and hygenic of the RPG fanbases.

Awesome. Thus the new marketing slogan:

Play Rifts: we smell better!

What Palladium needs to do is have specially made bars of soap with a Rifts miniature in the middle. Ya don't get the mini unless ya use the soap.

I will admit to having missed a couple of days of showering on occasion due to waking up 3 minutes before I have to go to work...but I don't go to cons smelling bad. And I also have deodorant in my car at all times "just-in-case" for stuff like sweating my arse off in a hot car for half an hour.

Will you personally be inspecting the gammers for freshness?

My electric cattleprod / odor detector is in the mail. Just think of it as an combination ionizer and motivational device!

And hippie_mama, it is no joke. There is a thread on RPGnet today about one gamer's house rules for bringing new players to his games. His #10 rule is "Bathe before gaming" and he recounts how he got two potential gamers refusing to meet his "outrageous" demands.

Any gammer who finds bathing outragous is just not needed at the table,

Firstly... well, ok, secondly, if I'm gonna be meeting new people, I want to make the best impression I can (within reason). So bathing is definitely on the "To Do" list.

And firstly... I'm a chick, and my nose works better than most of the species, so therefore, I can smell me first.

I may not do my hair, or wear nice clothes... but it's all clean. :-D

My reccomendation? If there's a smell, break out the Industrial-strength Febreeze. A few well-placed squirts will make all the difference.

For those participating, before you make your pilgrimage, stop off at your local CVS, Wallgreens, Eckart or whatever & hit the Travel Sized bins at the back of the store. A bottle of shampoo, a bar of soap & a stick or spraycan of deodorant will cost you only $3.00

Take it from an annual con-attendee. That ain't 'personality' causing the air to ripple about you. *kaff kaff* ;)

Honestly if I have to sit next to people who think its socially acceptable to not bath for several days while socializing with strangers, I may have to stab them clean.

As some others have said, I don't think it'll be an issue at the Open House. The Palladium fans last year didn't have any of the "Gamer Funk" associated with many conventions, at least to my nose.

I like to think that it's because PB fans are just a higher class of fans. It may be aided though by the fact that with the OH not taking place in/at a hotel, people really don't have any option but to return to hotel rooms at some point, where showers are readily accessible.

Well, semi-nicer smell than con-funk.. and actually, the Axe & Swiffer ninjas are real groups in fandom. Ninja outfits, armed with various hygeine supplies. 'Tis funny.

You are gonna smell anyway. Remember, you ARE on Porta-Pottie patrol. You must keep them smelling fresh.
