Unless its a TW mod I would restrict any magic enchantments to something that had to do with what that something does.
Thus the magiced mast was ok, but the fly as the eagle.....*shakes head*.
I would of had them use the fly spell for the enchantment.
You should somehow burn that boat to ash. you could let them salvage the mast but otherwise... it better of gone and get them on another quest.

A question, what setting was this game in? PFRPG2?

Get a copy of Ninjas & Superspies and look up the rules for vehicle combat, and for high-speed impact damage.
As to the balance of the situation, I don't know that the boat itself it the problem; it's how they got enough money to buy that boat.

Our party got rich that way too, along with a demon blood & bone scam, but it didn't really interfere with things. The main goals of the party couldn't be achieved through money alone.
