I know you have to be close to be able to even use telemechanics, but some in my campaign can teleport and are easily able to get near the robotic enemy and stop them on there next attack

Nope. Power Armor cannot save vs. possession under any circumstances.
Mechaniods, however, are technically classified as a type of borg dispite it being closer to a power armor. This renders all mechanoids completely invunerable to it Telemechanic possession.
The answer is: Find something other than power armor to throw at your players
