I think it's radiation proof. I'm actually designing a Great House that exists under one of these fall out zones because they noticed the Machine avoided these areas. It was deep enough underground that it wasn't an issue, but over time the pollution soaked so deep they decided to abandon the area and search for a home elsewhere.

Unfortunately, the Machine personality Kali learned about their existence and decided that instead of destroying them outright, it would be more fun to blockade them and let them rot in their poisonous prison.

That's how it's been for the past few decades. Everyone in the Great House of the Poisoned Earth must stay in their armor at all times to even survive. Women, children, and other non-combatants need to stay in one specially sealed chamber that protects them (somewhat) from the radioactive environment. Even with all these protective measures, the Saints and Engineers must continuously heal and repair genetic damage for hundreds of citizens each day. This keeps their Engineers too busy healing people to create the Bio-Tech they need to break free of this prison.

To a certain level they can be proof against it. And then after that they could be resistant to it. But you could engineer some microbes to feed on it and collect it and maybe break it down faster.
"Your Grace," she said, "I have only one question. Do you wish this man crippled or dead?"

"My Lady," the protector of Grayson told his Champion, "I do not wish him to leave this chamber alive."

"As you will it, your Grace."
