Are there any french related languages in Canada in the books?
What about Cajun related (french variation isn't it?)
Otherwise I'd have listed the same as above.
Demongogian maybe.

Techno-Can (or technological canter) is an odd one; It is a language we already speak, but a jargon of sorts. Similar to leet-speak it says it's what people use for technical manuals. I don't know if it can be translated as it consists of words we already understand but not in the manner that we are used to. It's like listening to a guy ramble off sports stats (if you're not a sports fan), but with parts, processes, etc...

You forgot the S. There are several distinct First Nations languages. Some have alot in common, some vitually nothing.

Negalith wrote:I was reading the description of the translator gizmo in the Rifts book. I mentions that it comes standard with “the nine known languages of the Americas”. Does anybody know what these nine are? Anybody want to hazard a guess? Are they all human, or do any Debee tongues rank in the nine?
That same description appeared in the original Rifts book, so any language that was introduced in later books is not likely to be one of the nine (like any of the Native American languages).
Really, I think that it's a minor mistake, and that they meant to say "the nine known languages of Rifts Earth," because there are nine major languages of Rifts Earth listed in the Language Skill section.
I suppose that the writers of the main book might have been referring to a
different nine languages, discounting some of the nine described in the skill section, and including some languages that they did not mention or describe anywhere, but I find it unlikely at best.
The Nine Languages (listed both in Rifts and RUE):
1. American
2. Techno-Can
3. Spanish
4. Japanese
5. Chinese
6. Euro
7. Dragonese/Elven
8. Gobbley
9. Faerie Speak

I think translators are cheese.
Or should very rare if they're not.

How do you decide the accuracy of the translation?

They're different systems.

just to point something out for those that didn't know. All of the european languages are germanic in origin. It's said if you learn any four languages in europe you can piece together most of what the others are saying with a fair degree of accuracy. So while french and german may be distinct skills in their specific areas, euro is probably the germanic root, or a compliation of it, so that you can speak accurately with either french or german.

No, they really aren't. NORTHERN European are Germanic, Southern European(and France) are Latin languages.

And it generally takes a marginal bit of immersion at that.

Yeah, I really have no idea where you get that. The Nordic Languages (Danish, Swedish, Icelandic and Norwegian) all came from the same root about 1000 years ago (which is a blip, in linguistic terms), and share some genetic material with modern English (due to the Danelaw). If it's from south of the Danube and east of the Rhine, it's derived from Latin (for the most part; Basque being an obvious exception); French, Spanish, Romany, Italian all have a degree of mutual intelligibility if you speak slowly and wave your arms a lot.
English, of course, is German with a French accent, as spoken by an inebriated Dane.

It was one of the languages that got lost and hasn't been found.

Because very few people speak it today. If it's a dead language in its heyday, it's even more dead in Rifts Earth.
