In an event like this, rescue work will have to be done by those who can do it.
When you have sheets in front of you, you will be able to tailor more specifically to the characters.
If the characters have rivals who get powers in the same period, seeing who can do the best job as a hero comes to mind.
One major monster can be accompanied by minor monsters wanting to make a name.

Re: Please Help! (Nightbane Halloween one-shot.)
Dark Day has lots of stuff going for it.
-Book 2: The Nightlands talks about what the Nightlords did during Darkday in a few different major cities. The players could get to stop some of those events.
-With all the panic and hysteria, law enforcement could be prone to overact. Some of the innocents the players need to be protect could be in danger from the law itself.
-The end of the world tends to bring out the worst and best in humanity. There should be riots, looting, random attacks, basically general pademonium that the players could stumble upon and help stop.
-The Nightlords did a lot of research before their invasion. The players if they are Nightbane, Magicians or Psychics, they could have Hounds on their trail. Even better, different Nightlords could have different minions attacking the same group of characters, and those minions fight each other when they interact.
-If a player wants to play a superhero, there's no reason that the influx of magical energy and the heightened tension of Darkday couldn't give someone mutation superpowers. Also, a Guardian is another idea there.
-The cults of night planned this ritual for years. The players could find a group and start working to disrupt the ritual. Perhaps the reason Darkday was only 24 hours long and not permanent was because of people like the players finding and prematurely ending the ceremonies that were causing the two dimensions to overlap.
-People disappeared left and right, taken into the nightlands as slaves or just replaced by dopplegangers. The players could stumble upon one such occurence and help to stop the kidnapping.
Let us know how your game goes. I've been thinking about doing somethign similar for a few years now and next year I think I'll get the chance.
