Palladium Books® Weekly Update – August 15, 2019

It has been wildly busy since returning from Gen Con. Busy with all kinds of stuff. Post Gen Con contacts follow-ups, Rifts® Savage Worlds approvals, prep to ship out the Rifts® Bestiary™ Megaverse Insider items (getting prints made, building boxes, signing prints, etc.), as well as dealing with business, personal and creative stuff.

The Hardcover Editions of the Rifts® Bestiary™ have arrived at the Palladium warehouse! We are busy sorting through, signing and numbering them so we can ship them out by early next week. That also means the Gold Edition Hardcover will ship next week too. The Gold Edition is limited to only around 300 copies.

We are very pleased with the positive response to Rifts® Bestiary™. Awesome to know our hard work has paid off and you love it. You’ll be finding that all of our upcoming releases also push the envelope and open up new avenues of adventure while supplying players (and Game Masters) with all kinds of new, cool resources, weapons, gear, critters, and opportunities.

In addition to trying to finish the writing on Garden of the Gods™ for Palladium Fantasy (it’s epic), I continue to coordinate several other projects, assigning art and writing snippets for a number of them as inspiration strikes. They include Rifts® Chaos Earth® Psychic Scream™, The Rifter® #84, Rifts® Titan Robotics™, In the Face of Death™ (Dead Reign®), and several other titles (including a Lopan Fantasy sourcebook by Glen Evans) and projects for DriveThruRPG and other venues, as well as others best left unnamed at the moment. To say we are busy is an understatement. Gen Con is exciting and inspiring, but it takes a while to get caught-up and back into the creative writing groove. UPDATE: Garden of the Gods^™ (Fantasy) – in final production

I have been bombarded with so many demands on my time, that I have not had the time I want to finish the writing on Garden of the Gods™, but when I have been writing, I’m hot! Thankfully, I think I have cleared my plate and will be able to devote most of my time to finishing it and diving into finishing other titles.

As I have said, this sourcebook is so darn good it makes me happy every time I work on it. Garden of the Gods™ is packed with magic artifacts, holy weapons, blessings, miracles, visions, curses, and all kinds of great stuff for players and hundreds of adventure hooks for Game Masters. Plus it is just full of flavor, some unexpected dangers and bad guys, and good guy NPCs or player characters like the Knights Fossar, the super-cool and redefined Fossar Wardens (keepers of secrets), Champion of the Gods, and so much more. As soon as I am finished with Garden of the Gods, I am back to work on In the Face of Death™. A September release.

A ton of interior artwork has been finished with additional material being turned out. If the new description for Psychic Scream™ doesn’t get your heart pumping, I don’t know what will! Rescheduled for a September or October release. Shooting for September.

UPDATE: Rifts^® Titan Robotics^™ – Fall release

Man, oh man, this book is going to be epic. More finished artwork and concept sketches come in every few day and are looking fabulous. I continue to make notes and we are all pumped up about this power armor, robot, and weapon filled sourcebook.

Wayne has made his selections and I have been assigning artwork. Another great issue full of fun and ideas.

UPDATE: Rifts^® Antarctica^™ – Fall or Winter Release

Nothing new to report. I think Rifts® Antarctica™ is going to surprise and delight a lot of people. It is also a great example of the fun you can have with the Raw Editions. The sold out Rifts® Antarctica Raw Edition is a far cry from what the finished book is going to be. Those of you who bought the Raw Edition get a glimpse at Palladium’s creative process. When you compare the two, you’ll see what we kept, what we eliminated, what we added, and how we embellished the material to reach the creative finale of the finished book coming this fall or winter. Fun and educational for those of you who aspire to be writers yourself or just like to have the inside track at Palladium. And true of all Raw Editions vs the finished book. Probably a fall or winter release.

These titles and several others are NOT forgotten and are in various stages of active production or waiting for production. As always, just because a book is not specifically listed in every Weekly Update, it does not mean it is discontinued or in limbo, it means there are more immediate things to talk about or there’s no substantive news to report. We are anxious to put as many of the books you’ve been waiting for into your hands as possible over the next 18 months. That includes Chaos Earth® First Responders™, Rifts® Antarctica, Rifts® CS Arsenal™, Rifts® Living Nowhere™, Beyond the Supernatural™ sourcebooks, more Fantasy sourcebooks and other titles. Artwork by Charles Walton II, Kevin Long and others, Negatives, Toys and Collectibles always available in Kevin's Online Toy & Collectibles eBay Store along with other good things

My eBay store is one of the few places where you can find original artwork by Charles "Chuck" Walton, Kevin Long, and others, as well as one-of-a-kind negatives from classic Rifts® and other Palladium RPG books (they look awesome framed!), rare Palladium collector hardcovers, signed books, other Palladium memorabilia, toys from my personal collection and other collectibles. Available now: One-of-a-kind book negatives. Negatives were very popular items at the Palladium Open House and people went crazy over them at Gen Con – including actor Joe Manganiello who scooped up a pile of TMNT negatives, while Palladium's own Mark Oberle, Carmen Bellaire, Brandon Aten and a whole lot of Palladium gamers went for negatives from Rifts® New West, Lone Star and Free Quebec. Fun.

Negatives are unique and attractive, one-of-a-kind (on rare occasions two-of-a-kind if a page was replaced or a second edition was made) works of art that resemble woodcut art and are very dynamic conversation pieces. Before digital printing, pages of a book were laid out by hand on a board, and each page was photographed. The plastic film negatives were then "ganged" on a massive sheet of Mylar 16 pages per big sheet, and the printing plates were made from the negatives – everything white, printing black.

When our printer, McNaughton and Gunn, went completely digital, they asked if Palladium Books wanted the negs, otherwise they would be destroyed. Regrettably, I let a few dozen be destroyed, but the negatives of many books were sent to Palladium. They have sat in our warehouse for years until I started to offer them for sale. I have also started signing the negatives in silver and each comes with a Certificate of Authenticity. Each negative comes on a white board inside a plastic magazine bag and looks fabulous framed! Fits in an 8x10 inch matt opening in a frame (each neg is roughly 8½ x 11 inches).

UPDATE: 2021 Palladium Open House (POH)

This event is coming in April or May 2021, so start planning and saving for it. We’ll be looking into securing hotel dates and posting information in a few months. This will be Palladium’s 40th Anniversary, so we are looking to pull out all the stops to make it extra amazing. As usual, we’ll be looking for Game Masters to run events at the POH.

A group of “privateers” is hired to find these especially rogue pirates and put an end to the slavers.

Closing Thoughts

It has been a rough week for a lot of reasons. Many of them good or potentially good – great even – but they all take effort, steal time away from the creative and wear you out. Inspiration and ideas are flying high, but as I write this, I’m feeling a bit worn out. Wayne and I need to finish coordinating making, gathering and shipping out the Rifts® Bestiary Megaverse® Insider packages. That involves a lot of standing on our feet, signing hundreds of books and a lot of work. All worthwhile for us and our Insiders. And we thank you all so much for your support. In the future, we’ll be offering this kind of Insider deal for Rifts® Bestiary Vol. 2 and other special releases.
