One game system – every genre – countless worlds – endless adventure

We hope your week is going well. This week has been a busy and strange roller coaster for us here in Palladiumville. We’ve been in the deep-freeze most of the week with single digit lows before soaring to 50 degrees Fahrenheit on Wednesday before dropping back down to freezing, and bringing with it a storm delivering rain, sleet, and snow. Lots of snow. Weather people are projecting 5-9 inches by Friday morning. Then there was the matter of “haunted plumbing” at home. Deep, gurgling, inhuman sounds that were ... well, scary. (It turned out fine.) Of course, we are spending most of our time on Open House logistics and creating product. There are many products in development and we have gotten many more printer quotes thanks to the efforts of Alex. A couple of them have quality product at the right price and promise turnaround times of less than 5 weeks which is very exciting. Heck, Valentine’s Day and Super Bowl Sunday feel like they happened two weeks ago. (We were happy for ex-Detroit Lions quarterback, Matthew Stafford, winning himself and his Rams teammates a Super Bowl ring.)

 

Boy, oh boy, do we have a lot of irons in the fire. We are looking to have a large number of surprise products for the Palladium Open House (April 22-24) and hope to have two book releases out before the POH! Products for the POH include things like three new T-shirts, a couple of old favorite T-shirts brought back, a number of nostalgic art prints, one-of-a-kind negatives, a couple of surprise books (if we can pull it off), new resin miniatures, a dozen out of print goodies pulled out of our archives, and a number of other surprises on a few different fronts! I’m being vague because we want it to be a fun surprise. So if you have not ordered your admissions ticket, now is the time, in case we sell out!

 

Now you can play a Defiler at the Open House! This is one my fun surprises. I will be running 4-5 two hour gaming events in which you get to play one of 12-14 Legendary Defiler characters as depicted from that piece of art on page 3 of every Palladium Fantasy RPG® ever published. Coake the Ranger, XarXar the Wizard, Lucifer Deeth the Sasquatch warrior, Nameless the Priest of Narabium, and others will be available as pre-generated player characters. Then you get to adventure in the fabled Palladium of Desires and maybe meet The Joker, the Demon Mirror, and ... well, you’ll have to wait and see. I think this will be only the second time in 40 years that I have revealed the Palladium of Desires to the outside world. With this being Palladium’s 40th Anniversary POH Celebration I’m pulling out all the stops. I encourage my fellow POH Game Masters to do likewise. We want to make this POH truly special and memorable! Something folks who attend will talk about for years. (“Really, I was there for Palladium’s 40th Anniversary! Let me tell you about it.”) G.M.s, get us those event descriptions. Members of our Palladium Family, join us for the fun. Weekend and single day tickets to the Palladium Open House – April 22-24, 2022 – are still available. Only VIP Thursday is sold out. It is not too late to join the fun and be part of this historic event.

 

10 Titles are being reprinted. We are staying on top of inventory and have recently submitted 10 titles for reprints so we don’t run out. There are only a few that may go temporarily out of stock, but if they do, they’ll only be out of print for a week or two. Meanwhile, we think we have found ourselves a trio of viable alternative printers with good to excellent turnaround times without sacrificing quality. We’ll soon see. Fingers crossed. Unfortunately, that does not apply to hardcover books. Still looking for a competitively priced hardcover printer with fast turnaround time. That means for the time being we remain at the mercy of our current printer.

 

Chaos Earth® RPG Hardcover – temporarily out of print. Even though we requested this title in October, we are still waiting for it. Most of the other hardcovers are available with decent numbers in stock, but a few may go out of print by April or May. That includes the Original Palladium RPG Deluxe Foil Hardcover. With any luck, we’ll get a restock before that happens, but we just don’t know with these guys.

 

Hardcover Update. The two new hardcovers – the Original Palladium Fantasy RPG® (1st Edition rules) Deluxe Foil Hardcover (includes the Arms of Nargash-Tor sourcebook) AND the Splicers® RPG “Bonus” Hardcover – continue to blow out the doors at lightning speed. The new Small Scale Resin Printed Military Spacecraft Series is a collection of 3D printable sci-fi space fighters designed by Michael Majestic in the spirit of 1980s anime, old school sci-fi aesthetics – arguably, some of the most striking and creatively bold work ever produced by Japanese animation studios. Mike has captured that boldness with clean lines and appealing visual designs. Additionally the digital 4K box art plus orthographic views of each fighter owes much to the way Japanese model and garage kit makers presented their releases in the 1980s and 90s (Tamiya aircraft, Dougram, Crusher Joe, Macross, etc.). While these are ultimately resin printed miniatures, and not model kits, they very much capture that sf anime feel. With more to come. Check it out. • Maximum Number of Players: 6-10 is typical, but run what YOU feel comfortable with running.
• Running Time: 3-4 hours is typical, and best for these kinds of events, longer can be a problem.
• What days you can run: VIP Thursday, Friday, Saturday & Sunday?
• When: Do you have a preferred time of day you want to run? If so, what is it? Specify preferences (10 AM, noon, 8:00 PM, what)?
  If we can NOT give you the preferred time slot, are you willing to run at a different time, earlier or later?

Safety Requirements

for Attendance at the 2022 Palladium Open House

Mask Wearing Required: Everyone participating in the Palladium Open House — including all attendees, exhibitors, Game Masters, event organizers, and event staff — will be required to wear a mask in all indoor spaces AT ALL TIMES, unless actively eating or drinking in “designated areas” or “outdoors.”

Masks must cover the nose and mouth and fit snugly against the sides without gaps. Masks may be manufactured or homemade and should consist of a solid piece of material WITHOUT slits, exhalation valves, or punctures. Wearing a mask helps to protect those around you. Only N95 level masks offer superior protection for yourself as well as those around you. See complete details in the online store description.

 

Waiver of Liability

The purchase of a Palladium Open House (POH) admission admits one person to all activities and exhibits at the POH during regularly scheduled hours of the Open House and events. In accepting a badge and in consideration for being admitted to the Palladium Open House, the holder consents to being recorded (by audio and/or visual means) for exhibition and exploitation by any means in all media, including without limitation the Internet, worldwide in perpetuity.

The badge holder releases Palladium Books Inc. from any liability for loss or damage to persons or property, infringement of any right, or any other claim or course of action of any kind; authorizes and permits Palladium Books, Inc. and its designees which includes but is not limited to all guests, exhibitors, and contractors to use and authorize the use of his/her name, voice, likeness and all reproductions thereof by any means and in all media now and hereafter known, including without limitation, the Internet, for all purposes worldwide in perpetuity; and agrees to comply with all the rules and regulations of the Event. Available now: One-of-a-kind book negatives. Negatives are always very popular items at the Palladium Open House and Gen Con. Truly unique, attractive, and fun.

Negatives are unique and attractive, one-of-a-kind (on rare occasions two-of-a-kind if a page or section of pages were replaced or a second edition was made) works of art that resemble woodcut art and are very dynamic conversation pieces. Before digital printing, pages of a book were laid out by hand on a board, and each page was photographed. The plastic film negatives were then “ganged” on a massive sheet of Mylar 16 pages per big sheet, and the printing plates were made from the negatives – everything white, printing black.

When our printer, McNaughton and Gunn was going to discard them, Palladium acquired many (not all) of the old negatives. I am only keeping a few books for myself and make majority of the rest available to you. I sign each negative in silver and each comes with a Certificate of Authenticity. The negative comes on a white board inside a plastic magazine bag and looks fabulous framed! Fits in an 8x10 inch matt opening in a frame (each neg is roughly 8½ x 11 inches). But don’t miss the other collectibles as well.

Closing Thoughts

It is a whirlwind of activity here at Palladium as we work on upcoming releases and all sorts of fun, new, Open House product releases; some special and limited, others available after their POH debut. Only a few, secondary items, like an array of black and white prints and a couple other new items (and rare collectibles), are available ONLY at the Open House. The POH is always a great way to test the market. ALL other products will be released AFTER the Open House. That said, we hope to have Rifts® CS Manhunters and The Rifter® #85 released to you all BEFORE the POH. So as you can imagine, we have been crazy busy. I’m happy to report that the special decorations for the POH are looking pretty sweet – at least in our humble opinions. Nothing cosmic, but cool. And it sounds like we’ll have a fair number of volunteer helpers on the Wednesday before VIP night so we are looking good on that front.

Open House Game Masters, please, please, please, get us your game descriptions, the days you want to run, etc., as soon as possible. Thank you. This is important in order to have sufficient numbers of game events. As usual, I will be accommodating 12 players for each of my 7-8 two hour games, including the Defilers at the Palladium of Desires. I’m probably running 4-5 of those and a couple BTS and/or Dead Reign® games. This year I want to make sure I have time for panel talks and to hang around to chat with you.

Please join us at the Palladium Open House. We are working hard to make this Open House and 40th Anniversary celebration truly special, so please come over, even if it is for just one or two days. Many of our creators like Ramon Perez (artist), John Zeleznik (artist), Matthew Clements (writer), Matthew Balent (writer) and others are coming in to celebrate Palladium’s landmark 40th Anniversary. Giving you the chance to meet and have many Palladium creators sign your books. Among them people you rarely see at any other conventions. Johnny Z only attends the San Diego Comic Con. Ramon Perez only attends one or two every few years. Matthew Clements (writer), Matthew Balent (writer), and Nick Bradshaw (artist), attend even fewer than those. Likewise, me, Sean, and other Palladium staffers seldom attend more than one or two conventions a year; usually Gen Con. Take advantage of this rare opportunity. Remember, even the POH only happens every 3-4 years. And many of us ain’t getting any younger. The 2022 POH will be a blast! (Can you tell I’m excited? I’m excited.)

One game system – every genre – countless worlds – endless adventure

The recent Palladium Fantasy Bundles of Holding proved to be our most successful Bundles to date! Our thanks to everyone who participated. This is further evidence of the tremendous renaissance the RPG industry is experiencing. We saw it during Surprise Package season too. Every game line was selling well, but only requests for Rifts® books outnumbered those for Palladium Fantasy®. We also saw that Dead Reign®, Nightbane®, Heroes Unlimited, After the Bomb®, and Beyond the Supernatural were also in hot demand. It is nice to see RPGs enjoying such a powerful and well deserved resurgence.

This week at Palladium we have been doing a lot of physical prep work and planning for the 2022 Palladium Open House (POH) – April 22-24. After all, we do not want to wait till the last minute. Moreover, I want this POH to be the most organized and fun ever. After all, we are celebrating the milestone of Palladium’s 40th Anniversary and we want it to be memorable for everyone in attendance. In fact, much of this Weekly Update is dedicated to the POH. I hope we see a lot of people joining the celebration. I’m pulling out all the stops by digging into the Palladium archives and my own personal collection to offer collector items, out of print books, hardcovers, and a lot of things I hope those in attendance will find exciting and fun. That includes some TMNT, Robotech®, Palladium Fantasy RPG®, and Rifts® items, among others. Maybe even a pristine Valley of the Pharaohs (there are only 4 copies in our possession), one-of-a-kind negatives, and some original artwork.

Hardcover Update. The two new hardcovers – the Original Palladium Fantasy RPG® (1st Edition rules) deluxe foil hardcover (includes the Arms of Nargash-Tor sourcebook) AND the Splicers® RPG “Bonus” Hardcover – are in stock and blowing out the doors at lightning speed. Both books are beautiful. We have shipped more than 200 orders since these books arrived last Wednesday and the orders keep coming. Thank you.

Warning: The printer shorted us on the print run due to the inability to get sufficient amounts of paper and materials for the hardcover itself. That means if sales keep up at the pace we are seeing, the First Edition Fantasy hardcover and Splicers® hardcover may sell out by mid-March, maybe even by the end of February. We have put 50 copies of each book aside to insure we have copies for the Open House. If you know you want them we suggest you buy these two titles sooner than later. Remember, this printer has proven to be unreliable, so we do not know when we might see the rest of the order. And even though we cannot find another cost effective printer to take over, we may stop using the current hardcover printer due to all the drama, poor communication, and unreliability.

Are you excited about the 2022 Palladium Books Open House – April 22-24? We sure are! And we are pulling out all the stops to make the 40th Anniversary celebration (delayed from last year due to Covid) an event to remember.

The 2022 Palladium Books Open House starts for VIP attendees on Thursday afternoon, April 21. You can start arriving anytime after 1:00 PM to hang out or help with setup. Most VIPs start arriving around 3:00 PM to hang, chat, enjoy a VIP dinner (around 5:30 PM), participate in early buying and opening ceremonies (I introduce key folks and blab for a bit), followed by an evening of gaming.

Elite Volunteers may arrive Tuesday afternoon and/or Wednesday morning to help us with the heavy lifting of setting up tables and chairs, sweeping floors, cleaning bathrooms, hanging sound dampening fabric, running errands and other setup. These are the crazy, wonderful folks who are paying for VIP night and/or the weekend but also cheerfully lend a helping hand. Like I say, Palladium fans are the greatest. Thank you. Morning Volunteers: This is anyone who wants to arrive early Friday, Saturday, and Sunday morning at 8:30 AM to help straighten up.

The POH continues to run Friday through Sunday – April 22-24. Doors open at 8:30 AM for volunteer helpers to straighten up, toss out trash, restock bathrooms, etc. Game Masters with early morning games may also arrive at 8:30 AM to start setting up for their games. The doors “officially” open at 9:00 AM every morning with the first round of games starting shortly thereafter. See Admissions for the cost of Weekend and single day tickets and how to order them.

Reserve your Hotel Room as soon as possible, and before March 7, 2022, to guarantee a room is available and that you get the special, discounted “Palladium Open House” block rate. Just tell them you are coming to the Palladium Open House and want the special group rate. See Hotel details, below.

If you are uncomfortable about attending the POH due to Covid concerns or you are opposed to wearing a face mask (a requirement), please do NOT attend. Let us know by March 15, 2022, to get a refund of your admission tickets. We share your concerns, which is why we are taking reasonable precautions. We strongly suggest vaccinations and a booster shot, but proof of vaccination is not required to attend the POH. Wearing masks at all times, except when eating at designated areas, is required. No exceptions. Please Read the sections on Safety Requirements and Waiver of Liability.

That said, Covid cases have already dropped 70% in Michigan from their peak during the holidays. By spring Covid cases should be very low. The POH takes place inside Palladium’s large, airy warehouse, which should also reduce risk. The 30 foot ceilings and openness, spacing of tables, along with mask wearing and reasonable distancing, will all help to keep us all safe. The use of hand sanitizers and hand washing is encouraged. Weather permitting, we can open up the bay doors to let in fresh air and increase air circulation. See Safety Requirements and Waiver of Liability, below, for more details.

Palladium Open House (POH) – April 22-24, 2022

(April 21 if you are coming in for VIP Thursday which starts mid-afternoon, with dinner early evening).

Please join us to celebrate Palladium’s 40 Year Anniversary. Meet me, Kevin Siembieda, and the Palladium crew as well as a couple dozen other Palladium creators/writers/artists, bring books to get signed, and enjoy a weekend of Palladium gaming with the very people who make the games, in the building where the magic happens! Game with the people who make the games you love like Kevin Siembieda, Julius Rosenstein, Glen Evans, Greg Diaczyk, Steven Dawes, John Klinkel, and a host of others.

This year is all the more special because we are celebrating Palladium’s 40th Anniversary. Palladium actually turned 40 last year, which is why the POH was originally scheduled for 2021, but the pandemic caused us to reschedule. Nothing is going to stop the overdue celebration this year. I’m looking to have some fun, how about you?

We are not requiring proof of vaccination for the POH, but we highly recommend getting vaccinated. We will require everyone attending to wear face masks. Happy to report that, just as we had hoped, Covid cases are already starting to plummet in Michigan and across the country so we should be pretty safe by April, especially inside the spacious and airy Palladium warehouse.

Get your POH admission tickets now while they remain available. Palladium’s warehouse can only hold so many people to begin with and with Covid safety considerations, we will be strictly limiting attendance this year. I think we can accommodate another 100 people or so, and that will be it. VIP Thursday is already sold out. We cannot wait to see many of our old friends and make new ones. Come for one day or the whole 3-day weekend, but come to celebrate 40 years of RPGs, meet 30+ Palladium creators, game with the people who make the games you love, be the first to get new releases debuting at the POH, and have a blast. Note: Though “walk ins” are welcomed at the door, if we reach capacity you may be turned away. Advance Ticket Purchase guarantees your admission and we will have your badge waiting at the door when you arrive.

Price of admission covers all events. Being accepted into a game event is on a first-come, first served basis. Dates: April 21 (VIP Thursday), April 22, 23, 24.

$60 per person for the Three Day Weekend Pass (Friday, Saturday & Sunday) when ordered in advance per each individual. $60 at the door and after April 22, 2021, but ONLY if space is available.

$30 per person for Friday, April 22, 9:00 AM till closing (about midnight). Same price at the door, if space is available.

$30 per person for Saturday, April 23, 9:00 AM till closing (about midnight). Same price at the door, but ONLY if space is available. This is usually the busiest day! The Live Auction is also held on Saturday.

SOLD OUT! $117 for “VIP Day” – Thursday, April 21, 2021: Starts around 2:00 P.M. till about midnight. All tickets are sold out, HOWEVER you may want to call the Palladium office to get on the “Cancellations VIP Waiting List.” Should someone be unable to attend and cancel, we turn to the V.I.P. Waiting List and you may get the call alerting you that one or more tickets are available for purchase. VIP Day starts around 2:00 PM as setup winds to a close. You get to hang out, meet artists and writers and staff, make purchases, and chat with people. Around 5:30 PM is the catered dinner limited to around 100 gamers plus staff and creators. You enjoy a delicious, catered, Italian dinner, plus you get an extra afternoon and evening of gaming, a more intimate chance to talk with Palladium staff, artists and writers, and first crack at rare collectibles, prints and original art. Live Auction – Saturday, April 23 – FREE for all attendees. The live auction with Kevin Siembieda as the auctioneer is always fun. And this year is going to be epic! Kevin has dug out a lot of rare, out of print books and miniatures, first printings, signed books, hardcovers, original artwork, proofreader photocopies of books like early TMNT®, Robotech®, Palladium Fantasy®, Rifts®, etc.; most signed by Kevin and available staff, artists, and writers. Stuff Kevin thinks folks will go crazy over. He is even debating whether or not to put some of his super-rare 1979 and 1980s D&D Judges Guild artwork in the auction. Kevin unearthed dozens of his 1980s Judges Guild illustrations, though they might be too pricey for the POH. He is trying to get them evaluated now, and has a few art dealers interested already. Time will tell.

Both are approximately 3 miles from Palladium Books (39074 Webb Court, Westland, Michigan, 48185) and are located off of I-275 on Ann Arbor Road. Plenty of places to eat just down the road west of both hotels. Plus there will be concessions on the site of the POH.

2022 POH Dates – April 21 (VIP Thursday), 22, 23, and 24 (Sunday). NOTE: Both hotels have agreed to allow people to get the Palladium Group Rate Discount if you arrive a day or two before the POH or stay a day or two after the POH dates. This is especially helpful for our volunteers and friends who like to show up to help a couple days before the Open House and stay till the Monday or Tuesday after the event.

We try to make every POH amazing and special. I mean, how often do any of us get to hang out with 30-40 Palladium creators or a few hundred gamers from around the globe? Where else can you ask the game creators for player tips, G.M. advice, or the back story behind your favorite games and characters? Only at the Palladium Open House.

The Palladium Open House is like a big family reunion or four day party. There have been good times and bad times, and through it all we had Palladium fans at our sides and helping out, meaning every POH is a celebration of YOU, our fans, as much as anything else. This one will be extra special because it is Palladium’s 40th Birthday! So feel free to bring gifts! Nah, just kidding about the gifts. Being able to host this event is a gift for us all. And who knows how many more of these some of us will be able to attend. A lot of us ain’t spring chickens anymore. So if you can, please join us for what is going to be a Palladium gaming extravaganza.

Kevin Siembieda runs games, talks with fans, signs books, participates in panel talks and tries to be there for YOU from when the doors open till 10:30 PM every single day. And the same can be said of most of the Palladium personalities from around the world. Perez, and prolific writer Matthew Clements (Garden of the Gods, NG 1 & 2, Rifts® Antarctica, LOTD 3), and many others. They are special guests, because it is difficult to get them to find the time to attend any gaming event, let alone all appear at the same event.

Safety Requirements

for Attendance at the 2022 Palladium Open House

Mask Wearing Required: Everyone participating in the Palladium Open House — including all attendees, exhibitors, Game Masters, event organizers, and event staff — will be required to wear a mask in all indoor spaces AT ALL TIMES, unless actively eating or drinking in “designated areas” or “outdoors.”

Masks must cover the nose and mouth and fit snugly against the sides without gaps. Masks may be manufactured or homemade and should consist of a solid piece of material WITHOUT slits, exhalation valves, or punctures. Wearing a mask helps to protect those around you. Only N95 level masks offer superior protection for yourself as well as those around you.

Neck gaiters are acceptable ONLY IF they follow the above guidelines.

Bandanas are NOT acceptable.

Face shields and/or goggles are NOT acceptable on their own but can be worn with a face covering that follows the above guidelines.

Face coverings as part of cosplay or a costume are not a replacement for an appropriate mask — the above guidelines must still be met.

Proof of vaccination is not required, but vaccination and a booster shot are strongly encouraged.

If you are not feeling well, suspect you may have Covid, or that you have been exposed to Covid, PLEASE DO NOT attend the POH. Or get tested and provide evidence you tested negative before arriving. Available now: One-of-a-kind book negatives. Negatives are always very popular items at the Palladium Open House and Gen Con. Truly unique, attractive, and fun.

Negatives are unique and attractive, one-of-a-kind (on rare occasions two-of-a-kind if a page or section of pages were replaced or a second edition was made) works of art that resemble woodcut art and are very dynamic conversation pieces. Before digital printing, pages of a book were laid out by hand on a board, and each page was photographed. The plastic film negatives were then “ganged” on a massive sheet of Mylar 16 pages per big sheet, and the printing plates were made from the negatives – everything white, printing black.

When our printer, McNaughton and Gunn was going to discard them, Palladium acquired many (not all) of the old negatives. I am only keeping a few books for myself and make majority of the rest available to you. I sign each negative in silver and each comes with a Certificate of Authenticity. The negative comes on a white board inside a plastic magazine bag and looks fabulous framed! Fits in an 8x10 inch matt opening in a frame (each neg is roughly 8½ x 11 inches). But don’t miss the other collectibles as well.

Closing Thoughts

I have already said plenty, so I will keep this short. We are pumped about the Palladium Open House and hope you will be too. I want to have a lot of small surprises and product debuts there for those in attendance, so we have been working on those projects, along with upcoming new book releases in between cleaning and setting up the warehouse for the event.

This is Palladium’s 40 year birthday/anniversary celebration and we want it to be special for everyone. It warms my heart to see so many of our out-of-state freelancers, writers, artists, Game Masters and volunteers coming to the event. Thank you everyone! I look forward to seeing you all. And that goes double for all of the gamers coming to the event! I was shocked to learn that many of our overseas and Canadian friends and fans are coming despite Covid-19 concerns. Fantastic! And that’s why we are not postponing this special POH Anniversary celebration again. Our friends and fans are sick and tired of the pandemic and isolation. Covid seems to be waning significantly, we are taking precautions, and I think we all need to have a little fun with fellow members of our Palladium Family. Even if it is while wearing face masks. I know I’m ready. How about you?

We are working hard to make the 40th Anniversary Celebration at the POH epic and memorable. We want lots of games. Lots of surprises. Lots of fun.
